United Regional HealthCare System Activates Eclipsys Clinical Solutions in Highly Successful ‘Big-Bang’ Activation

Eclipsys Corporation, The Outcomes Company® announced that United Regional Health Care System (United Regional) a comprehensive cardiac care facility and Level III trauma center in Wichita Falls, TX, has successfully activated a wide range of Eclipsys clinical solutions. The technology initiative spans 35 in-patient units in two separate locations, as well as a regional emergency department (ED) that serves an eight-county area. More than two thousand users are now utilizing Eclipsys solutions in support of URHCS’ goal to establish an electronic healthcare environment across the enterprise.

“We selected Eclipsys because we needed a highly flexible solution that would enable us to improve patient safety and advance our goal of having integrated electronic medical records for every patient, accessible by our clinicians from anywhere in the world,” said Dwayne McKee, manager of applications and project planning at United Regional. “We had been struggling with separate clinical, pharmacy and other departmental solutions that were at end of life. With the Eclipsys solution suite, all our information is now tightly integrated, automated and available in one location.”

The “big-bang” activation was the culmination of months of collaboration among the executive team at United Regional, physician champions and the Eclipsys implementation team. Six hours after legacy systems were deactivated, 100 percent of United Regional’s nurses and physicians were utilizing the Eclipsys system to enter all orders and retrieve results.

To achieve higher-quality patient care through improved care team efficiency and decision-making, the hospital simultaneously deployed Eclipsys’ Sunrise Acute Care™, Sunrise Pharmacy™, Sunrise Radiology™ and Sunrise Emergency Care™ solutions, which are part of Eclipsys’ Sunrise Enterprise™ suite of solutions that reside on the Eclipsys XA extended architecture™. In combination, these solutions are providing unified views of up-to-date clinical data to better coordinate care.

“The activation itself was very smooth and we encountered very few user issues,” added McKee. “The success was due in large part to the dedication of the Eclipsys activation team, the United Regional implementation team, as well as the unwavering support from our executive team who championed it from beginning to end.”

As part of its ongoing initiative to give all clinicians real-time access to the same up-to-date patient information, United Regional will use Sunrise Acute Care for all orders and results, patient task lists, as well as an electronic medication administration record (eMAR) that provides an overall snapshot of medications administered throughout the continuum of care. United Regional also will use Sunrise Acute Care’s computerized physician order entry (CPOE) solution in its ED, with plans to extend it throughout the enterprise. In addition, the activation will enable the hospital system to fully leverage the native integration with Eclipsys’ Sunrise Pharmacy solution in support of integrated medication management and creating a paperless interdisciplinary charting environment.

With Sunrise Emergency Care, nurses and other caregivers in emergency rooms are able to electronically document care while simultaneously providing inpatient clinicians access to patient information for a seamless and timelier workflow. For ED patients admitted to the hospital, the electronic medical record (EMR) will continue to be expanded with patient data throughout the patient’s inpatient stay, enabling caregivers to make more informed care decisions, while eliminating redundant testing and questioning of the patient and the emergency care team.

The recent activation builds upon United Regional’s successful “big-bang” activation of Eclipsys revenue cycle solutions in 2006, including Sunrise Record Manager™, Sunrise Access Manager™ and Sunrise Patient Financials™ — which are integrated billing front-end access management and financial performance tools designed to more-effectively manage the business aspects of the organization. With both the financial and clinical systems on Eclipsys’ advanced technology platform, URHCS has set the stage to fully leverage its investment in technology to reduce costs, streamline access to actionable data, and create a more unified system experience for end users.

“We’re pleased to build on our relationship with United Regional and proud to be their chosen health information technology partner,” said Jay Deady, Eclipsys executive vice president of Client Solutions. “Their decision to expand use of our solutions validates our belief that high-value, proven applications residing on an advanced, integrated platform is the right technology strategy for healthcare organizations seeking to achieve optimal efficiency and patient outcomes. We look forward to continued success in scaling our advanced technology platform and applications to meet the needs of our clients, from rural and community hospitals to academic institutions.”
