ProCure Treatment Centers, Inc., and INTEGRIS Health will use Elekta’s MOSAIQ® Oncology Information System and XiO® treatment planning solutions to manage and optimize its clinical and administrative workflows at the newly opened ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Oklahoma City, and the INTEGRIS Cancer Institute of Oklahoma (ICIO), a comprehensive cancer care center that will open this fall.

The ProCure Proton Therapy Center, only the sixth proton center in the United States, opened July 8. It shares a campus with the ICIO, which will provide a continuum of care for proton therapy patients who need the extra services.

ProCure collaborates with leading radiation oncologists and hospitals to develop proton centers. The Oklahoma facility will serve 1,500 patients a year and is the first in a network of ProCure centers to open. A center in suburban Chicago is under construction, scheduled to open in early 2011, and will also use Elekta products. ProCure has centers in development in south Florida and Detroit, Mich.

Proton therapy is an alternative to standard X-ray radiation that causes less damage to healthy tissue and fewer side effects. It is indicated for the treatment of certain solid tumors, particularly those that are located near critical organs or structures, such as the brain or heart, and for treating tumors in pediatric patients.

“Protons give a much lower dose to the surrounding tissues which, in turn, allows for a higher dose to the tumor than with X-ray radiation,” said Niek Schreuder, senior vice president of medical physics and technology for ProCure. “This will potentially improve outcomes while reducing side effects.”

Philip S. Lance, president of the ICIO said INTEGRIS sought a single oncology information system that would maximize open communications and efficiency across its oncology services.
“Today, many cancer related treatments require a multi-modality approach, which drives the need for integration,” said Lance. “MOSAIQ will provide the right foundation so that we can continue to offer personalized medicine to our patients.”

The two centers will use MOSAIQ for all aspects of their conventional radiation oncology, medical oncology, hematology, palliative care and proton therapy workflow, as well as XiO for proton treatment planning.

“We have a unique situation in that the entire oncology workflow is based on one integrated MOSAIQ solution,” said Ben Harris, ProCure’s director of training and development. “This is a first in a proton treatment center. Combining multiple oncology modalities through a central electronic medical record ensures that our medical and administrative teams control the information they need so we can provide the best possible care to our patients.”
