Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center has became the first hospital in the US to install STAAT Mod ICU units to care for Covid-19 patients and those with other critical illnesses.
Designed by HGA, the units were prefabricated and assembled by The Boldt Company. The units, which arrived on site 25 April, were assembled and linked to the hospital infrastructure.
The solution is intended to quickly increase ICU bed capacity at Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center.
STAAT Mod is a critical care inpatient unit that comes with Airborne Infection Isolation Rooms (AIIR) to ensure improves safety for patients, as well as caregivers.
Adjacent to the hospital, 12 modules were installed to provide 16 private ICU rooms with isolation and support space. Installation of STAAT Mods, which weigh 25,000 pounds each, required two weeks to complete, noted HGA.
Upon completion of the installation, utilities, connecting mods, medical gas supply hook ups, electrical, building ramps and roofing were added.
Adventist HealthCare president and CEO Terry Forde said: “Covid-19 is an unprecedented event and we are both grateful and proud to be able to bring the cutting-edge solution to our Fort Washington location.
“Being able to deploy an ICU-level facility and care in three weeks gives our team an opportunity to help even more people in our area who need care so urgently right now.”
The STAAT Mod has a ten-year life span, allowing longer-term support. It is said to enable the medical centre to separate patient populations to safely restart elective procedures.
These units were developed and tested using virtual reality (VR) simulation exercises.
