UnitedHealthcare Extends Coverage to Abbotts Unique Neurostimulation Therapy for Nerve Pain

Abbott announced that UnitedHealthcare (UHC), the largest private health insurance company in the United States, has updated its ‘Implanted Electrical Stimulator for Spinal Cord’ medical policy to expand patient access to Abbott’s dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurostimulation devices for people suffering from chronic pain when medical policy criteria are met. This updated medical policy covers 26 million UHC commercial members and will go into effect on March 1, 2022.

UnitedHealthcare’s new coverage assessment provides access to Abbott’s non-opioid DRG stimulation, the world’s only neurostimulator specifically designed to treat complex nerve pain conditions caused by complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) or peripheral causalgia, which are forms of chronic pain that that affect the lower extremities up to the hips, including the pelvis, after an injury or surgery. An estimated 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain for whom DRG stimulation represents an important new treatment option.iii

“The addition of coverage for a DRG stimulation therapy by one of the nation’s largest insurers is an important development for patients living with chronic pain who have exhausted other treatments,” said Kiran Patel, M.D., Spine and Pain Institute of New York. “The new clinical guidance from UnitedHealthcare means that people will now have the ability to consider Abbott’s DRG treatment as an accessible option to manage their chronic pain.”

CRPS and causalgia usually follow trauma, amputation, or surgery, such as hernia repair, knee or hip replacement, and result in chronic burning or stinging pain, numbness, hypersensitivity to touch, and chronic persistent pain in the lower limbs. These conditions have historically been challenging to treat because of the disruption in how the nervous system processes or transmits pain signals often resulting in long-lasting disabling chronic pain.

For patients suffering from CRPS or causalgia, DRG neurostimulation has been found to provide greater pain relief when compared to traditional spinal cord stimulation.iv

DRG therapy works by stimulating the dorsal root ganglia (DRG), a bundle of nerves located on the outside of the spinal cord. These nerve structures along the spinal column are made up of densely populated sensory nerves, and act like traffic lights, regulating signals and sensations that travel through nerve fibers along the spinal column to the brain. DRG stimulation therapy involves implanting a small battery device, typically in the abdomen or buttock,i and running thin insulated wires, called leads, near the DRG. The leads deliver electrical pulses to the nerves, which block pain signals from traveling to the spinal cord and the brain thereby reducing pain in specific locations in the body.

“Neuropathic pain is one of the most prevalent and under-treated forms of chronic pain,” said Pedro Malha, vice president of Abbott’s neuromodulation business. “The new coverage guidance by UnitedHealthcare to offer these patients DRG stimulation is yet another step forward in providing people with a safe and effective treatment alternative for their chronic pain. We are working with a number of other commercial payors to continue to extend the benefits of DRG stimulation therapy so as many people as possible can benefit.”

Abbott’s Proclaim™ dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurostimulation system is the only FDA-approved DRG technology for the treatment of CRPS I and causalgia of the lower extremities.i The system is low maintenance and recharge free, meaning patients do not need to pause from their daily activities to charge their battery as with other systems. Using Bluetooth® wireless connectivity, patients can feel empowered by controlling their prescribed stimulation levels through a familiar Apple iPod touch® device or app on their iPhone. It is also compatible with Abbott’s NeuroSphere™ Virtual Clinic, a first-of-its-kind technology that allows patients to communicate with physicians and receive new treatment settings remotely without having to travel to their physician’s office. Patients are able to try DRG stimulation with a weeklong therapy trial, or temporary evaluation, before receiving a permanent implant.

Bruker Expands Nanoflow Consumables Portfolio for 4D-Proteomics

Bruker’s Molecular Phenomics Research Tools Enable New Insights into ‘Long COVID’ and Post-Acute Metabolic Abnormalities

Bruker Corporation announced the acquisition of PepSep, a Danish company specializing in nanoflow liquid chromatography (nanoLC) columns, specialty emitters and components to optimize nanoflow proteomics workflows, which are extensively used in Bruker’s nanoElute® UHPLC system. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded by Peter Nielsen, PepSep makes unique columns that minimize post-column eluent mixing. This innovation gives excellent nanoLC performance with a standard connector, enhancing robust, routine ease-of-use as the emitter-tip remains in position while the column is exchanged.

Peter Nielsen said: “It is great to be part of Bruker as it allows the PepSep team to focus on innovation in separations for ultra-high throughput proteomics on the timsTOF platform. Matching separations technology that is ultra-robust and delivers the best sensitivity for high-speed TIMS/PASEF detection, with the ease of use of non-integrated tips was important, and we now can continue to develop chemistries to drive performance enhancements for 4D-Proteomics and 4D-Lipidomics applications.”

Dr. Brett Phinney, Proteomics Core Director at the UC Davis Genome Center, has been using PepSep products for about a year, and stated: “I’m happy to use PepSep columns in my laboratory. They are better than what I can make myself, and my short gradient results are impressive. These are by far the best columns I’ve used to date.”

Bruker is also pleased to announce an OEM partnership and agreement with IonOpticks Pty Ltd in Melbourne, Australia. IonOpticks was founded by Associate Professor Andrew Webb from The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) and his colleagues Drs. Jarrod Sandow and Guiseppe Infusini. IonOpticks offers Aurora columns with nanoZero® UHPLC fitting and integrated packed emitter tips that result in excellent peak shapes and maximized separation power. Andrew Webb and team created a unique emitter design with no post-column dead volume and the user friendly ‘plug and play’ nanoZero connection. IonOpticks will now produce the Bruker Focus series nanoLC columns with identical performance as the Aurora series.

Dr. Andrew Webb commented: “Ultra-high throughput proteomics, where we analyze large patient cohorts, will allow us to compare signatures not just across disease states but to truly understand disease in the context of health. My WEHI lab was an early adopter of the timsTOF technology which allowed us to run faster methods, and the Aurora columns deliver the ultra-high sensitivity with unmatched robustness required to run 50 SPD (samples per day) methods.”

Dr. Michael Krawitzky, Bruker’s Product Manager for LC-MS consumables, stated: “The addition of PepSep’s column portfolio combined with the IonOpticks high-performance pulled tip columns provide our timsTOF customers more nanoLC choices to advance their applications. UCI Health Partners with Biofourmis for Hospital at Home and Post-Acute Remote Patient Monitoring

Biofourmis, a Boston-based global leader in digital therapeutics and virtual care that powers personalized predictive care, announced today a multi-year agreement with UCI Health to support continuous artificial intelligence (AI)-powered remote monitoring of acute and post-acute care patients in their homes through Biofourmis tools.

UCI Health comprises the clinical enterprise of the University of California, Irvine and is Orange County’s only academic health system. The medical center is a 459-bed acute care hospital providing tertiary and quaternary care, ambulatory and specialty medical, behavioral health and rehabilitation services. It is the primary teaching location for UCI School of Medicine. U.S. News & World Report has recognized UCI Medical Center as one of America’s Best Hospitals for 21 consecutive years and ranked it among the top 15 hospitals in California.

Biofourmis’ solutions will enable UCI Health to establish a virtual care platform for remote patient monitoring (RPM) and hospital-at-home initiatives. Biofourmis’ RPM platform will replace UCI Health’s legacy remote patient monitoring system and continue monitoring appropriate patients after their discharge. Post-acute RPM can help avoid hospital readmissions and, for some patients, can be an alternative to a rehabilitation center or skilled nursing facility.

Building on our existing operational excellence, virtual care, and innovation strategies during the pandemic, we are focused on providing tools that allow our patients to recover in the comfort of their homes,” said UCI Health Executive Director of Virtual Care Susanna Rustad. “We want to simplify our patients’ journey and streamline patient progression through our hospital system to help transform care, using technology as an enabler.”

Vital signs and other biometrics will be automatically collected within UCI Health’s Epic electronic health record system and analyzed through the Biofourmis AI algorithms. The AI establishes a personalized patient baseline using data collected from wearable biosensors and electronic patient-reported outcomes. When the baseline is compared against population-level data, the AI creates a real-time, reliable view of disease trajectory. Machine-learning capabilities alert clinicians to opportunities that optimize treatment, predict decompensation, better engage patients, and ultimately identify and prevent serious medical events before they occur.

“UCI Health is leading the industry in adopting more remote and virtual care models to safely care for their acute and post-acute care patients,” said Kuldeep Singh Rajput, founder and CEO of Biofourmis. As this care virtualization initiative grows within the health system, the Biofourmis platform can be easily scaled and customized to enable UCI Health’s clinicians across numerous specialties to deliver exceptional care independent of a patient’s physical location.

BD Expands from Cancer Discovery and Diagnosis into Post-Treatment Monitoring with Acquisition of Cytognos from Vitro S.A.

BD Receives Order from Dutch Ministry of Health for More than Nine Million 15-minute COVID-19 Antigen Tests

BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, announced it has completed the acquisition of Cytognos, a privately held company headquartered in Salamanca, Spain, specializing in flow cytometry solutions for blood cancer diagnosis, minimal residual disease (MRD) detection and immune monitoring research for blood diseases.

The acquisition of Cytognos accelerates BD’s strategy to support chronic disease management by expanding its portfolio of blood cancer diagnostics, immune assessment tests and informatics to address patient, clinician and care provider needs to better understand the immune system, immune response and MRD. By monitoring for MRD, lab managers and physicians can detect low levels of cancer cells following treatment that alerts them if the disease is still present or if there is a signal of recurrence. This is a key element of the patient care continuum that helps clinicians and physicians recognize when cancer recurs and aids in the timely treatment of patients.

“As the understanding and treatment of cancer evolves and improves, the importance of monitoring post remission cancer survivors has become paramount to improve patient outcomes,” said Puneet Sarin, worldwide president of BD Biosciences. “Cytognos’ capabilities are complementary to those already developed by BD scientists to screen for the most common blood cancers and will enable BD to expand beyond cancer discovery and diagnosis into the monitoring phase of the patient’s journey. We’re building on our strong track record of identifying and executing on opportunities and then integrating those new products and businesses into our portfolio.”

With the acquisition of Cytognos, BD gains exclusive access to advanced assays licensed from the EuroFlow™ Consortium, a scientifically independent network in the fields of hematology and immunology with scientists and researchers from more than 20 European universities and hospitals. BD has existing license agreements with EuroFlow for multiple other assays and the addition of the Cytognos assays further strengthens BD’s 12-year licensing collaboration with EuroFlow.

“Cytognos has 25 years of experience successfully designing, developing, manufacturing and commercializing innovative flow cytometry products for in vitro diagnostics and life science research use,” said Fernando Martin de Lara, Cytognos CEO, who will continue as the business leader for this specific element of BDB’s portfolio. We are pleased to be joining a global health care leader with robust infrastructure and deep expertise to accelerate growth of a combined BD/Cytognos offering by expanding the reach of Cytognos’ solutions.

Cytognos’ key products increase BD’s comprehensive portfolio of diagnostic and research solutions for certain types of cancers that use flow cytometry as the primary means of discovery, diagnosis and understanding, including lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma. Cytognos IVD products are CE marked and available only in Europe and other countries where regulatory approval of the products has been obtained. They are not available for sale in the U.S. In addition, Cytognos provides several research assays for multiple myeloma MRD and immune monitoring, which expands BD’s portfolio in this space. Cytognos’ approximately 80 employees will join BD as a result of the acquisition.

Cytognos also brings sophisticated informatics solutions that will further BD’s leadership in the growing area of immunology and enable the company to expand its flow informatics offerings. In a world of limited resources and increasing data and settings, Cytognos technology offers a powerful, intuitive way that provides a better understanding of patient data.

Cytognos, which is celebrating the 25-year anniversary since its foundation, was a division of Vitro, a Spanish diagnostics company that develops, produces and sells fully integrated reagents, hardware and software platforms.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to be immaterial to BD’s fiscal 2022 financial results. Cytognos financial results will be reported under the Biosciences business within the Life Sciences segment.
