MabSpace Biosciences Secures $15 Million in Series A Financing from Lilly Asia Ventures

MabSpace Biosciences Co., Ltd., a company focused on the discovery and development of antibody-based therapeutics with proprietary immune tolerance breaking technology, today announced the completion of a $15 million Series A financing, which will be used to advance MabSpace’s pipeline of therapeutic antibody programs into clinical studies, and enable expanded discovery of novel antibodies aimed at various components of tumor microenvironment to enhance responses of tumors that may be less likely to respond to T cell checkpoint monotherapy.
“We are incredibly pleased to have the support of Lilly Asia Venture and are in a strong position to advance multiple programs toward human clinical proof of concept studies,” said Dr. Xueming Qian,
Founder, Chairman and CEO of MabSpace. “Each of these programs leverages MabSpace’s unique immune tolerance breaking technology and translational science platform, which is designed to generate and identify candidate antibodies binding to different epitope on the therapeutic target and displaying differentiated properties relative to benchmark competing antibodies. We believe this approach will provide us strong intellectual protection as well as opportunities to discover and develop best-in-class therapeutics with durable responses to patients in need of better treatment options.”
“We believe that MabSpace has built a differentiated approach rooted in its unique immune tolerance breaking based antibody discovery platform and translational science capabilities that position it to bring the next wave of innovation to the field,” said Stephen Lin, Principal at Lilly Asia Ventures, the sole investor for this Series A round, and a Board member of MabSpace. “Since the launch of MabSpace three years ago, it has made tremendous progress, including advancing its innovative platform technology as well as the discovery of novel therapies. With its founders’ and senior management team’s experience in antibody therapeutic discovery and development, MabSpace is well positioned to be a leader in the field.”

UnitedHealth Group close to buying Helios for about $1.6 billion

Health Insurer UnitedHealth Group Inc (UNH.N) is nearing a deal to buy Helios for more than $1.6 billion, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The takeover of Helios, which is owned by Kelso & Company and Stone Point Capital LLC, could be announced as early as this week, Bloomberg reported earlier on Wednesday, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
No decision has been made and the talks may fall apart, Bloomberg said.
Based in Memphis, Tennessee, Helios provides workers' compensation and pharmacy benefit management to some of the largest U.S. insurers and third-party administrators. It manages more than 7 million prescriptions annually.
A takeover of Helios would follow UnitedHealth's recent $12.8 billion acquisition of Catamaran Corp in an attempt to boost its pharmacy benefit business.
UnitedHealth declined to comment and Helios could not be reached immediately for comment outside regular business hours.

The internationality of the exhibition was further reflected in the number of visitors, an increase of 13% compared to the last edition in 2013. 34% of the overall visitors came from overseas, mainly from ASEAN countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam, as well as other Asian countries including China, India, Japan and Taiwan.
On the domestic front, Thai visitors recorded a 17% increase, which included visiting delegations from more than 60 hospitals from across Bangkok and surrounding provinces. According to Mr Watcharin Boonshuwong, Chief of Patient Care Services, Praram 9 Hospital, Bangkok, who was visiting for the first time and in search of medical devices and instrumentation for use in the emergency ICU wards, “the diverse range of products from various countries is very impressive and I would certainly encourage my colleagues from the hospital to visit this exhibition.”

that we have been able to generate has been excellent.”
Malaysian exhibitor LKL Advance Metaltech Sdn Bhd added that “There have been some very interesting leads the event has generated – of which we seldom come across in other medical shows. The ability to link up exhibitors with relevant distributors, suppliers and agents and vice versa and catering to the different solutions and visitor needs across the various specializations and broad healthcare channels at MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND, proved to be a key element that contributed to the exhibition as a significant sourcing platform. The business matching programme that was offered as a value-add service, saw a healthy take up rate of 4,500 meeting requests made. Ms Sarah Liebermann, an exhibitor from DEWIMED Medizintechnik GmbH found the platform user friendly and a “useful tool where I’ve found potential leads via the scheduled meetings.”

Leading global health institutions digitize pathology workflows with Philips to enhance disease

Leading global health institutions digitize pathology workflows with Philips to enhance disease diagnoses

Pathologists across Singapore, Austria, Germany, Belgium and the UK adopt Philips Digital Pathology Solutions to drive cutting-edge diagnostics

As the number of trained pathologists decreases while the aging population and complexity of cancer is on the rise, Royal Philips announced the growing adoption of its Digital Pathology Solutions by health systems across the globe who are enhancing their operations. Through its IntelliSite Pathology Solution,* Philips enables health care organizations to reinvent the traditional histopathology workflow, enhance efficiency and productivity, and improve the confidence in making diagnosis.

Through examination of patient tissue samples, pathology plays a crucial role in the diagnosis, management and prevention of a variety of diseases, including cancer. As health care cost and quality pressures continue to mount, digital pathology can help improve the efficiency and quality of cancer diagnostics. Several high-volume and networked pathology institutions across the world have implemented the Philips digital pathology platform, which offers an integrated approach to improve workflows, enhance collaboration capabilities to speed up consults, unify patient data and enable a flexible growth path to get more information from tumor tissue.

“Modern pathology labs are coming under continued pressure to increase throughput and efficiency while improving quality,” said Russell Granzow, General Manager of Philips Digital Pathology Solutions. “As the shift towards personalized medicine requires pathology data that guides the right therapy for the right patient at the right time, Philips is driving the evolution toward digitized workflows to ensure pathologists are empowered to meet industry demand.”

  • Supporting archiving in Singapore – Singapore General Hospital (SGH), the flagship hospital of the country’s public healthcare system, recently implemented the world’s largest digital pathology installation in its diagnostic laboratory. To handle its more than 50,000 pathology cases a year, SGH will leverage more than 1.6 petabytes of disk storage and 1.6 petabytes of tape archiving storage to avoid the challenges of storing glass tissue slides – like loss, breakage, degrading or manual archiving errors – and reduce the physical space needed to manage all of these records.
  • Full scale installation in Belgium – The AZ Sint Jan in Brugge, Belgium completed a full-scale installation that is designed to accommodate full digital histopathology diagnosis. Recognizing that a short transitional process to digital would save a great deal in efficiency and costs, the lead pathologist Dr. Van den Berghe opted to avoid a gradual transitioning strategy by coordinating a full digital implementation to benefit from this new way of working.
  • Providing remote diagnostic services across Austria – In Austria two private pathology laboratories in Hall in Tirol and St. Pölten provide diagnostic services for hospitals and private medical centers across Austria. To speed up sample diagnosis and to implement interactive consultation of experts for the patients, Dr. Soleiman is creating an international network of pathologists by transitioning to an entirely digital workflow with about 200,000 histology slides per year with the Philips IntelliSite solution.

Germany´s largest telemedicine platform goes online – The “CCS Telehealth Ostsachsen” platform is provided by a subsidiary of Dresden´s university clinic and T-Systems International. The European pilot scheme offers a broad range of possibilities in networked medical care and is intended to overcome former limitations. Incorporating digital pathology pathologists have the opportunity to analyze digitally captured tissue samples and to digitally consult a council of other specialists with the aim to improve patient diagnosis.

  • Expanding teams through virtualization in the UK – Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) NHS Foundation Trust will partner with Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to develop a service for remote digital reporting of pathology cases. By addressing the long standing problem of a shortage of histopathologists in the United Kingdom this unique collaboration for the UK enables the partners to offer their service to other hospitals in the Yorkshire and Humber region and beyond and facilitates access to subspecialized diagnostic histopathology service for all patients. The system is designed to scale should more sites and pathology laboratories join this collaboration.

Across the globe, leading institutions are leveraging Philips’ experience in clinical digital transformation to help pathology laboratories make that next step in workflow improvement and accelerate knowledge sharing between care providers.

* Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution is CE marked for primary diagnostics in the EU and Health Canada. In the U.S., Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution is cleared by FDA for diagnostic use in the evaluation of HER2 expression in breast cancer and is offered for research use (RUO).

Children’s Hospitals Shift from CT Scans for Common Childhood Health Problems

A study published online Aug. 24 by the journal Pediatrics finds a significant decrease in the use of computed tomography (CT) scans at children's hospitals for 10 common childhood diagnoses including seizure, concussion, appendectomy and upper respiratory tract infection.

CINCINNATI CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL MEDICAL CENTER.

Alternate types of imaging such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are being used more frequently for eight of the 10 diagnoses. Study authors hypothesize the decline in CT usage may be attributable to a growing body of evidence linking ionizing radiation from CT scans to an increased risk of cancer in patients. They also point to the adoption of electronic health records, which allows for easy transfer of medical data and images and limits the need for duplicate scans.

The study, "Computed Tomography and Shifts to Alternate Imaging Modalities in Hospitalized Children," is the first of its kinds to look at CT usage across multiple hospitals and conditions.

"This study reinforces the pediatric community's commitment to think about both immediate and long term risks and benefits of our treatment," said Michelle Parker, MD, the study's lead investigator and a physician in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. "Minimizing potential for harm to our patients as we work to heal them should always remain a priority."

A CT scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images of bones, blood vessels and soft tissues, providing more detail than conventional X-rays. CT scans, however, emit 100 to 1,000 times more ionizing radiation than conventional X-rays.

According to previously published literature, there may be one malignancy as a result of ionizing radiation among every 10,000 children exposed to CT scans. To minimize the risk of cancer in patients requiring sophisticated imaging for diagnostic purposes, when an alternate imaging modality is indicated, doctors may be shifting to MRI which uses magnetic fields or ultrasound, which uses high frequency sound waves to show internal body images in real time.

"There may still be times when a CT scan is the most appropriate imaging tool to use, however parents should be encouraged by this study which shows that physicians and hospitals are likely incorporating new evidence and adapting to provide safe medical care," said Parker.

The study used data from the Children's Hospital Association's Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS), a comparative pediatric database of clinical and resource utilization information for inpatient, ambulatory surgery emergency department and observation unit patient encounters for 45 children's hospitals. The authors looked at inpatients and observation patients for 10 specific diagnoses at 33 participating hospitals from Jan. 1, 2004 to Dec. 31, 2012. The ten diagnoses analyzed for diagnostic imaging use included seizure, ventricular shunt procedure, craniotomy, concussion, severe head trauma, appendectomy, gastroenteritis, abdominal pain, upper respiratory tract infection and ENT conditions.

In addition to Cincinnati Children's, the study included clinicians at Children's Hospital Philadelphia, Children Health in Dallas, TX and Children's Hospital Association.
