iMDsoft, a global leader in clinical information systems for perioperative, critical, and acute care, and Codonics of Middleburg Heights, OH, a leading provider of image distribution solutions for the medical industry, have announced an agreement that will complement iMDsoft’s anesthesia solution with an innovative syringe labeling system. The system will be fully integrated with the

Medication administration in anesthesia presents significant patient safety challenges. As a result, numerous regulatory bodies offer guidelines for medication labeling. Codonics’ Smart Label System, a work-in-progress, when combined with MetaVision, assists in filling the regulatory need by helping ensure compliance with these standards, while improving workflow, efficiency, and accuracy.

The system automates the syringe preparation workflow so that fully compliant labels are printed while the syringe is being filled. The Smart Label system starts by reading the NDC barcode on the vial. The integrated printer then produces full-color labels that comply with the 2010 National Safety Patient Goals of The Joint Commission (TJC) and American Society of Anesthesiologists Guidelines. The system provides innovative safety features, such as visual and audible confirmation of each drug name and concentration, as well as clinical alerts for recalled and other non-usable drugs. The printing system integrates seamlessly with the MetaVision AIMS, which records drug administration and reduces medical errors by issuing notifications of events, such as expired syringes or syringe swaps.
