Harwood Feffer LLP Announces Investigation of IsoRay, Inc.

TheStreet.com published article titled "IsoRay Takes Liberties With Lung Cancer Study Results to Prop Up Stock Price," which reported "To make up for the inability to deliver revenue growth — and prop up its stock price — IsoRay issues a lot of promotional press releases, some of which take liberties with clinical data using clever, selective editing."  The article goes on to give the following example: IsoRay recently trumpeted a 100% survival at five years in high risk patients being treated with Cesium-131 without mentioning that the comparable five year survival rate for patients undergoing surgery alone is 98%.

Our investigation concerns whether the Company board of directors has breached its fiduciary duties to shareholders, grossly mismanaged the Company, and/or committed abuses of control in connection with the foregoing.

If you own IsoRay shares and wish to discuss this matter with us, or have any questions concerning your rights and interests with regard to this matter, please contact:

Affordable Care Act Has Caused Some Insurance Rates to Skyrocket
Dr. Elaina George
Board-Certified Otolaryngologist, Host

“Medicine On Call” Radio Show
“The Affordable Care Act has made insurance more expensive. It should not come as a surprise that if you mandate that people buy insurance that covers services they don’t want or need and you put no controls over what insurance companies can charge, then they will shift the cost to the patient. They will continue to limit a patient’s access by limiting physician panels, limiting what they cover and increasing patient out-of-pocket costs so they can limit what they pay out for medical care in order to cut their losses. In short, having health insurance does not equal having access to healthcare.”

Dr. George is a board-certified otolaryngologist. She graduated from Princeton University with a degree in biology, received her master’s degree in medical microbiology from Long Island University, and received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. She completed her residency at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. She is on the advisory council of the Project 21 black leadership network, an initiative of The National Center for Public Policy Research. Selfie Syndrome: Why Seeking Social Media Validation Threatens Self-Worth
Dr. Frieda Birnbaum
Research Psychologist, Psychoanalyst

“Many people who regularly post on social media are presenting a false or semi-false version of who they really are. Some post pictures with the goal of getting as many likes or comments as possible. What happens during this process is the act of surrendering personal power and becoming co-dependent on others. When you need approval of others to feel good about yourself, the foundation of your self-worth becomes quicksand. When you post on social media what you think people want to see about you, you lose out on the real you. The real you may not have movie-star looks, or a rock-star life (yet), but neither do most people. If you can accept yourself for who you are without conditions, your sense of self-worth and confidence dramatically increases.”
Based in the New York metropolitan area, Dr. Birnbaum is a research psychologist, psychoanalyst and author of “What Price Power: An In-Depth Study of the Professional Woman in a Relationship.” She’s an expert on depression, women’s issues, and attaining happiness, and was featured on “Oprah” and “20/20” as the oldest woman in the U.S. to have twins.

Kalorama: First FDA-Approved Biosimilar Brings Hope for CMO Growth

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) recent approval of Zarxio (filgrastim-sndz) — the first biosimilar product approved in the United States — points toward growth in the contract manufacturing organization (CMO) industry, according to Kalorama Information. The mainstream CMO industry is geared to the production of small-molecular drugs and lacks the infrastructure to produce major biopharmaceutical products. The healthcare market research publisher's report, Biopharmaceutical and Vaccine Production Markets, found that, though there are uncertainties, a large number of CMOs are positioning themselves to capitalize on the anticipated increase in the demand for biomanufacturing.

Biopharmaceutical and Vaccine Production Markets can be found at Kalorama Information: http://www.kaloramainformation.com/redirect.asp?progid=87482&productid=8357580.

Sandoz, Inc.'s Zarxio, approved in March, is biosimilar to Amgen Inc.'s Neupogen (filgrastim), which was originally licensed in 1991. Zarxio is approved for the same indications as Neupogen, and can be prescribed by a health care professional for patients with cancer receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy, patients with acute myeloid leukemia receiving induction or consolidation chemotherapy, patients with cancer undergoing bone marrow transplantation, patients undergoing autologous peripheral blood progenitor cell collection and therapy, and patients with severe chronic neutropenia.

"The most volatile factor in CMO growth is likely to be the approval and adoption of biosimilar products," said Bruce Carlson, Publisher of Kalorama Information.   "If these biologic generics deliver on the promise of massive cost savings for extremely expensive biopharmaceuticals, growth of biosimilars will spur dramatic growth in contract manufacturing production capacity. "

Further the report says that since many biosimilar developers cannot lay claim to their own biomanufacturing facilities – and that a significant number of follow-on versions are successful for each current successful product – we can expect that the CMO market will profit from biosimilars development, with active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) biologics manufacturing in particular an area of demand.

The FDA believes that biosimilars will provide access to important therapies for patients who need them. The Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act of 2009 (BPCI Act) was passed as part of the Affordable Care Act that President Obama signed into law in March 2010. The BPCI Act created an abbreviated licensure pathway for biological products shown to be "biosimilar" to or "interchangeable" with an FDA-licensed biological product, called the "reference product." This abbreviated licensure pathway under section 351(k) of the Public Health Service Act enables a biosimilar biological product to be licensed based on less than a full complement of product-specific preclinical and clinical data.

A biosimilar product can only be approved by the FDA if it has the same mechanism of action, route of administration, dosage form and strength as the reference product, and only for the indications and conditions of use that have been approved for the reference product. The facilities where biosimilars are manufactured must also meet the FDA's standards.

In addition to Sandoz, a number of major drug firms, including Merck, Teva, Dr. Reddy's and Biocon, have indicated interest in pursuing biosimilar drug opportunities. It remains to be seen, of course, if actual revenues generated by biosimilar products will ultimately equal high initial expectations. Manufacturing costs for biopharmaceuticals are considerably higher than those of common oral pharmaceuticals, and the massive discounting seen with the generic introductions of blockbuster patented drug are unlikely. There is concern that originator products will retain the bulk of the market.

Biopharmaceutical and Vaccine Production Markets examines the total biopharmaceutical manufacturing market, including in its estimates all costs related to biopharmaceutical and vaccine production.  It includes the following useful information for business planning:

Market Forecasts and Estimates of Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Costs
Vaccine Production Estimates
Trend Discussion
Production Methods
The Competitive Environment, including Contract Manufacturing and Outsourcing
Regulation of the Market
Company Profiles

This report also profiles major contract manufacturers, including Lonza AG, Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH, FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, Sandoz, Royal DSM, Rentschler Biotechnologie, Celonic, BIOMEVA GmbH, ProBioGen AG and Baxter BioPharma Solutions/Baxter Bioscience.

The report contains production segmentations for the mammalian cell, microbial cell, monoclonal antibody, other recombinant protein, vaccine, and insulin manufacturing markets, with forecasts to 2018. The current competitive environment is noted, listing selected biopharmaceutical contract manufacturers, selected top-selling biopharmaceuticals, selected Asian biomanufacturing contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs), the top 10 biopharma companies based on 2012 biopharma revenues, and the top manufacturers by global biopharmaceutical manufacturing capacity.

Biopharmaceutical and Vaccine Production Markets (Mammalian Cell Production, Microbial Cell Production Market, Monoclonal Antibody Manufacturing, Other Recombinant Protein Manufacturing, Vaccine Manufacturing, Insulin Manufacturing Market) can be found at Kalorama Information: http://www.kaloramainformation.com/redirect.asp?progid=87482&productid=8357580.

EyePromise® Eye Vitamins to Support Healthy Vision Month

The month of May is designated as Healthy Vision Month by the National Eye Institute (NEI). To celebrate healthy vision, EyePromise has created a free e-book about how nutrition affects vision and eye health.

For those interested in learning more about nutrition and eye health, EyePromise.com offers an array of learning resources including videos, patient education guides, articles, and assessments.

According to many published studies, nutrition plays an important role in maintaining the health of our eyes. A healthy diet for one’s vision should consist of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Foods such as carrots, tomatoes, bell peppers, strawberries, pumpkin, corn and cantaloupe supply vitamins A and C as well as carotenoids. Carotenoids are the compounds that give these fruits and vegetables their yellow, orange, and red pigments.

Two carotenoids essential for eye health are zeaxanthin and lutein. These nutrients comprise the macular pigment located in the retina, which is in the back of the eye. Macular pigments act as a photo-protectant, or “internal sunglasses” for the eye. Healthy macular pigment protects the photoreceptors responsible for central and peripheral vision.

“While lutein is readily available in dark green leafy vegetables, zeaxanthin is quite scarce in the average daily diet. Trace amounts of zeaxanthin are available in brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as corn and orange bell peppers, but the average American does not consume an adequate quantity of these foods,” said Terry Sullivan, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for ZeaVision, the company behind the EyePromise eye vitamin brand. “Therefore, supplementing a healthy diet with a quality eye vitamin is essential for many.”

EyePromise eye vitamins are made in the USA, from the highest quality, natural ingredients, and feature a 60-Day, Money-Back Guarantee. To learn more, visit www.eyepromise.com.

Life Sciences Hub Takes Shape in Windsor-Essex, Ontario Canada

Today, the WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation and Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare joined forces by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to officially launch the cross border Life Sciences Hub.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20150521/217988)

This hub will improve patient care, advance clinical research, increase development of new products, attract high-value trade and investments and create desirable careers in our region. This hub will help us develop the Life Sciences sector in our region by capitalizing on our distinct advantages and strengths.

Brian Lewis, President and CEO, MEDEC the national association representing the medical technology industry in Canada said, "I'm thrilled that Windsor-Essex has recognized the immense potential of the medical technology industry to not only contribute to improved patient outcomes, but as an economic driver as well – creating jobs and improving healthcare sustainability. This innovative initiative harnesses the benefits that the region has to offer and we look forward to great things to come out of it."

Paul Lucas, Chair, Life Sciences Ontario added, "In a very competitive global environment this is truly a creative way for Canada to grow the Life Sciences sector."

"HDGH is excited to play a key role in bringing new and innovative health technologies to the marketplace that will contribute to a more productive and sustainable health care system and that will change the lives of the patients and families we serve," stated Janice Kaffer, President & CEO, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare

Sandra Pupatello, CEO, WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation added, "It takes many partners in the health system to give a company the access it needs to succeed in the Life Sciences sector.  The companies that will thrive in the health sciences space are the ones that get access to the health system.  This isn't just about the real estate it's about the access to health care that will allow a company to grow…that is the true innovation today.  This is unique.  The cross-border relationship that we are extending to our companies in this hub simply doesn't exist anywhere else. This is our differentiator."

Our location offers companies access to world-class medical institutions, universities and personnel on both sides of the border enabling them to take advantage of Canada's less stringent regulatory barriers, generous incentives for R&D and the lower cost of doing business.   In addition, our region excels in advanced manufacturing and has a highly skilled and educated workforce in the life sciences sector.

New Study Reveals America’s Fear of Aging

According to a new Aegis Living Study on Attitudes Toward Aging, adults of all generations are equally as likely to worry about what will happen to their memory as they age (72% Millennials, 75% Gen X, 77% Boomers, 69% Silent Generation), which may help explain why nearly half of all adults (45%) agree they are scared of aging, particularly Millennials (47%), Gen X'ers (51%), and Boomers (43%). The study was commission by Aegis Living and conducted online by Harris Poll in April, 2015 among more than 2,000 U.S. adults ages 18+.

"This study shines a light on a national issue that demands more attention. The more we're aware of Alzheimer's and dementia, the more research funding will start to flow. It simply has to," says Dr. Shirley Newell, Aegis Living Chief Medical Officer. "We wanted to get a handle on what America is thinking about regarding an issue that faces our residents every day. And that's what we have with these new numbers."

Women More Worried than Men

The study also reveals that women are more likely than men to worry about what will happen to their memory as they age (77% vs. 70%, respectively) and be scared of aging (48% vs. 41%, respectively), and their fears may not be unfounded. The majority of Aegis Living residents are women and according to the Alzheimer's Association, two-thirds of the 5 million seniors with Alzheimer's disease are women. Women in their 60's are about twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease over the rest of their lives as they are to develop breast cancer. The Alzheimer's Association https://alz.org/abam/ has designated June as Alzheimer's Awareness and Brain Awareness Month.

More Funding Urgently Needed for Alzheimer's Research
According to the Alzheimer's Association, U.S. direct cost of caring for people with Alzheimer's in 2015 is $226 billion. By 2050, it will skyrocket to $1.2 trillion. Last year, more than $5 billion was spent on cancer research. $4 billion was spent on heart disease research and yet only $500 million was devoted to Alzheimer's research.

Top Five Signs of Dementia http://www.aegisliving.com/resource-center/5-signs-of-dementia/

Problems with Vision
Mood and Personality Changes
Poor Judgement and Difficulty Making Decisions
Misplacing or Losing Things
Forgetfulness

(Dementia is an umbrella term for a decline in mental ability that is necessary for day-to-day function. Although there is no specific disease related to dementia, Alzheimer's accounts for 60-80 percent of all cases of mental decline – Alzheimer's Association)

About the Survey
The survey was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of Aegis Living, between April 23rd and April 27th, 2015 among 2,015 U.S. adults ages 18+. Share the road: Look, listen to stay wreck-less and injury free this summer

Motorcyclists will be the first to tell you, it's the thrill of the ride and the wind in their hair that keeps them riding.

Read the road. And you won't need as many new parts. Motorcycle crashes don't always involve another vehicle. Slick surfaces and road debris can lead to broken bikes, and broken bones. Ride at a speed that give you time to react. Check our website below for more cycle safety tips. Visit OrthoInfo.org/CycleSafety.

With more motorcycles on the road than ever before—increasing 84 percent from 1998 to 2007—and approximately 2.3 million motorcycle injuries reported in 2013, according to the

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)—the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) would like to remind drivers to make every ride count.

Orthopaedic surgeons are the doctors most often called upon to treat motorcycle injuries—including fractures to the leg, foot, arm, wrist and spine—but would prefer that motorcycle drivers and passengers enjoy the ride without injury.

"As an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, I see people with devastating injuries such as fractures and head trauma as a result of motorcycle accidents," said AAOS spokesperson and OTA President Theodore Miclau, MD. "Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles on the road and so it's often difficult for motorists to see them. For this reason, it's important for motorists to not only keep an eye out for riders but be extra cautious and listen for them as well."

The AAOS and OTA offer safety tips to riders and motorists:

Motorists
Avoid distracted driving. Anytime a distraction needs your attention, simply stop your vehicle in a safe area and respond. Follow the AAOS and Auto Alliance wreck-less checklist.

Motorcyclists
Take a motorcycle safety training course. A motorcycle safety training course provides the best way to learn the knowledge, skills, and behavior to be the safest motorcycle rider. Even if you are an experienced rider, consider taking a refresher course or a specialty riding course, to make safety a lifelong priority.

Always wear a helmet. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a fatal motorcycle crash by 37 percent according to NHTSA. The "right" helmet has a "DOT" label to show that it meets U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) safety standards, fits securely to the driver's head shape and size, protects the face, and has adequate ventilation to enhance cooling and reduce fogging.

Choose or purchase a motorcycle with anti-lock brakes. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) prevents the wheels from locking up when braking, reducing the risk of a fatal motorcycle crash by 31 percent.

Avoid driving in inclement weather. Slick roads, especially with rain can make turning and braking more difficult.

Wear high- visibility protective gear. According to NHTSA, high-visibility gear enables other drivers and motorcyclists to see you from a greater distance and in inclement driving conditions. Protective gear includes jackets, pants, boots and gloves.

Always follow traffic laws, ride the speed limit, and never ride after drinking. If you plan to drink alcohol, make plans ahead of time for another, sober motorcycle operator to drive your motorcycle, or leave your motorcycle somewhere safe.

For more information on motorcycle injuries and prevention tips, visit OrthoInfo.org.

Orthopaedic surgeons restore mobility and reduce pain; they help people get back to work and to independent, productive lives. Visit ANationInMotion.org to read successful orthopaedic stories.

Kalorama: Top Companies Dominate Cardiac Defibrillator Market

The leading companies in the cardiac defibrillator segment of the $13 billion global cardiac rhythm management device market dominate their competition, according to Kalorama Information.  Kalorama found that Medtronic, St. Jude Medical, Boston Scientific and Asahi Kasei (with ZOLL Medical) command 80% of this market segment. The healthcare market research publisher's report, Cardiac Rhythm Management Device Markets, uses 2015 as a base year, providing forecasts for each year through 2020.  The market is evaluated via a combination of disease prevalence trends, population trends, device innovations, federal and industry standards and regulations.

"The cardiac defibrillator market is highly competitive and varies in participation by device segment," said Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama. "The implantable segment, for instance, is dominated by a handful of companies and these providers maintain their hold on market penetration."

Cardiac defibrillators are electrical devices that deliver therapeutic levels of energy to the heart muscle for the treatment of ventricular defibrillation, cardiac dysrhythmias and pulseless ventricular tachycardia. Devices can be implanted in the body, external, or transvenous. The goal of the technology is to reestablish the normal rhythm of the heartbeat.

The implantable defibrillator device segment has gained wide acceptance over the past decade. Within this segment are advanced versions of the technology, including cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-D). The external defibrillator device market consists of professional/manual defibrillators and automatic external defibrillators, commonly referred to as AEDs. The implantable transvenous cardioverter-defibrillator segment consists of devices implantable inside the body, able to perform both cardioversion, defibrillation and pacing of the heart.

In many markets, the top companies maintain their market edge through patented innovation. The cardiac defibrillator segment is no exception. Medtronic is listed in over 7,186 patents that describe medical devices, tissue-related systems, instrumentation, user interfaces, sensors, therapy systems, implantable devices, delivery devices, and monitoring technologies. There are 898 patents in the U.S. database under the St. Jude Medical name – for cardiovascular devices, implantables, sutures, fixation systems, ablation technology, an implantable system for measuring mechanical dyssynchronicity of the heart and catheters. Boston Scientific holds over 3,894 patents; recent technologies described in these patents include medical devices in neurostimulation, cardiology and other surgery. Asahi Kasei (with ZOLL Medical) has 105 patents in the U.S. patent database; recent patented technologies include systems for energy delivery, medical monitoring and a defibrillator with a light sensor. These market leaders use their patents to assert a level of control over their intellectual property and in so doing also help to maintain their market share.

Cardiac Rhythm Management Device Markets breaks down the cardiac rhythm device market into its segments, with market sizing and forecasts to 2020:
Sales of Cardiac Defibrillator by Type (External, Implantable)
Sales of External Defibrillators by Product Type, (AEDs, Professional/Manual Defibrillators)
Sales of Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators by Product Type, 2015 (Standard ICD, CRT-D)
Sales of Cardiac Pacemaker by External and Implantable Types
Sales of Implantable Cardiac Pacemakers by Product Type (Standard ICP, CRT-P)

As cardiovascular disease is an international problem and the focus of major world healthcare systems, the report also provides overall rhythm management device market size and forecasts (2010-2020) for each of the following countries: United States, Germany, UK, Italy, France, Spain, Brazil, China, Japan and Australia.

Primary sources for the report include telephone interviews and email correspondence with more than 100 key industry officials, consultants, health care providers, and government personnel on the topic of cardiac rhythm management.  These sources were the primary basis in gathering information specifically relating to revenue and market share data presented in this report.
