Integrating Medical and Pharmacy Transparency into a Holistic Healthcare Solution

Integrating Medical and Pharmacy Transparency into a Holistic Healthcare Solution

Sapphire Digital, the market leader in digital healthcare shopping, cost transparency, and incentivized healthcare navigation, announced a partnership with Rx Savings Solutions, the market-leading pharmacy cost transparency and decision support solution.

Another step forward in building a health system that is less complex, improves quality, and importantly, is less costly

As the cost of healthcare continues to rise, consumers are becoming more likely to seek alternative care options to save money. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that half of U.S. adults say they or a family member put off or skipped some sort of health care or relied on an alternative treatment in the past year because of the cost, and about one in eight say their medical condition got worse as a result. By integrating the innovative capabilities of Rx Savings Solutions into Sapphire’s leading S365 shopping platform, Sapphire Digital and Rx Savings Solutions guide and advise consumers on ways to reduce their out-of-pocket costs for care.

Pharmacy is becoming one of the most costly healthcare expenses for many Americans. According to the CDC, 73% of physician office visits and 79% of hospital visits result in drug therapy. Allowing shoppers to view medical and pharmaceutical care in a single location delivers improved healthcare navigation while reducing the total cost of care for consumers, health plans, and employers.

The S365 platform is an intuitive and modular provider discovery and cost transparency platform that makes it easy for members to select better, more affordable care. It integrates best-of-breed solution partners including expert medical opinions, surgery decision support, virtual care, online appointment scheduling, and now pharmaceutical savings to eliminate member friction in care selection and access.

The integration of Rx Savings Solutions services further expands the reach of the Sapphire Digital platform into pharmaceutical transparency and supports both companies’ mission to empower improved healthcare decisions for consumers.” said Kyle Raffaniello, Chief Executive Officer of Sapphire Digital.

“Through this strategic partnership, we can further empower consumers to shop for medical and pharmaceutical treatment options based on their individual benefits from their employers, pharmacy benefit managers and health insurance carriers while saving money,” said Michael Rea, a clinical pharmacist who founded and currently leads Rx Savings Solutions. “By integrating our platforms, we are taking yet another step forward in building a health system that is less complex, improves quality, and importantly, is less costly.”

Apollo Hospitals utilised decade-long patient data to develop an AI heart disease risk prediction tool

Apollo Hospitals utilised decade-long patient data to develop an AI heart disease risk prediction tool

Apollo Hospitals, one of India’s biggest hospital chains, has harnessed ten years’ worth of data from over 400,000 patients across India to develop an AI tool that predicts the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Introduced yesterday, the Apollo AI-powered Cardiovascular Disease Risk tool provides a risk score โ€“ categorised into high, moderate and minimal โ€“ that takes into account a patient’s lifestyle attributes, such as diet, tobacco and smoking preferences and physical activity, as well as psychological stress and anxiety as reflected via respiratory rate and blood pressure reading.

A news report that cited the hospital’s statement noted that the risk prediction tool, when used in the Indian population, is more accurate than the Framingham Risk Score, one of the commonly used scoring systems worldwide to assess patients’ risk of heart diseases.

The AI device has been validated in a long-term cohort health study by the Heart+Vascular Center at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands. It has also been validated by King Georgeโ€™s Medical University in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. A study on this tool is undergoing a peer review process for potential publication.

WHY IT MATTERS Deriving actionable insights via Microsoft Azure, the latest AI tool at Apollo Hospitals enables doctors to deliver “proactive, pre-emptive and preventive” care for at-risk individuals. This also empowers them to provide “more holistic” advice to patients with specific insights for lifestyle modification.

Studies are being done to use artificial intelligence to predict the risk of heart diseases. Omron and Kyoto University in Japan have teamed up to study the use of AI and home-recorded health data in predicting early signs of CVDs. Researchers at the University of Western Australia were recently awarded a government grant to develop a tool that can predict the risk of coronary heart disease from heart CT scans.

Meanwhile, an existing AI-enabled device developed by VUNO analyses the potential risk of cardiac arrest using primary vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate. The VUNO Med DeepCARS has recently received regulatory approval in South Korea.

“While some predictive tools do exist to help physicians understand the probability of their patients developing heart disease, most of these are based on Western datasets and donโ€™t take regional risk variations into account. This impacts their accuracy when applied in an Indian context. The Apollo AI-powered cardiovascular disease risk tool will change that and put the knowledge and the means to predict and prevent heart disease in the physicianโ€™s hands. Available till now only to Apolloโ€™s physicians, it is a proud moment for us to dedicate this AI tool to all physicians in the country,” said Dr Prathap C. Reddy, chairman of Apollo Hospitals Group.

VA launching yearlong independent cost estimate of EHR modernization

Integrating Patient Photos into the EHR Increases Patient Safety

After failing to present Congress with a full picture of the costs associated with its electronic health record modernization program, the Department of Veterans Affairs is bringing in an independent body to review the program and provide a full cost estimate.

Deputy CIO Paul Brubaker told lawmakers on the House Veteransโ€™ Affairs Committee during a legislative hearing Thursday that the VA has contracted the Institute for Defense Analysis to analyze and provide a total lifecycle cost of the EHR modernization program โ€” which was first pitched as a $10 billion project tag before ballooning to $16 billion, and likely more.

IDA will kick off its work later this month, and VA estimates it will be 12 months before it gets a full estimate, Brubaker said.

The VA hopes this will โ€œmake sure that for once and for all, we actually capture all of these end-to-end costsโ€ associated with the development and deployment of the program, now three years into its rollout. The program is designed to be a complete overhaul of the VAโ€™s health IT system, with a new cloud-based system from Cerner that should one day be interoperable with the Department of Defenseโ€™s own EHR.

Earlier this year, the VA came under fire after a series of reviews by its inspector general and Government Accountability Office found that the department underestimated the costs of infrastructure upgrades in the modernization program by billions of dollars, largely because of inconsistencies in how the department tracks the costs of the sprawling program across its offices and reports them to Congress.

This error led Congress to get involved, proposing the VA Electronic Health Record Transparency Act to force the VA to better account for its spending on the program and properly report it to lawmakers.

Telling lawmakers about the initial estimate, Brubaker said, โ€œwhen that first cost estimate was scoped, it wasnโ€™t scoped adequately.โ€

โ€œThe issue that we had initially is that we werenโ€™t capturing all of the costs according to what would be a standard lifecycle cost estimate definition โ€” we were only looking at those that were specifically related to deploying the EHRM technology,โ€ he said.

For instance, there are infrastructure upgrades needed for the EHR program that will also support other parts of VAโ€™s IT enterprise that were โ€œassumed by VAโ€™s Office of Information and Technology and the Veterans Health Administration,โ€ as one of the IG reports put it, and thought to be outside the scope of the EHR program.

โ€œWhat we have to do is weโ€™ve got to understand the end-to-end costs and all the additional support costs that go into the definition of crafting an independent cost estimate, as well as a lifecycle cost estimateโ€ฆ [which] includes all funding regardless of sources necessary for implementation of the program,โ€ Brubaker said. Later, he added, โ€œwe have to make sure that weโ€™ve got a very defensible cost attribution model.โ€

Outside of the independent estimate that IDA will provide, the VA has also stood up an IT investment review board, which Brubaker said โ€œhas already established a number of significant criteria designed to get all of us much-improved fidelity over cost estimates.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re building the IT investment management processes and the governance in order to get you that baseline fidelity that will drive transparency and accountability,โ€ Brubaker said.

ReCor Medical Launches the Paradise Ultrasound Renal Denervation for the Treatment of Hypertension in Europe

Interview on Renal Denervation (RDN) Therapy and it's Effects

ReCor Medical, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Otsuka Medical Devices Co., Ltd., announced that the companyโ€™s Paradiseโ„ข Ultrasound Renal Denervation System is now available for the treatment of uncontrolled hypertension in Germany. The first hospitals performing the procedure commercially are Heart Center Leipzig and Saarland University Hospital, Homburg/Saar.

โ€œDespite the availability of antihypertensive medications, many patients fail to control their hypertension, a dangerous condition that can lead to heart attack and death. Clinical data from the ACHIEVE, RADIOSOUND, RADIANCE-HTN SOLO and TRIO trials show that ultrasound renal denervation with the Paradise System can lower blood pressure and is a new treatment option for physicians to help their selected patients,โ€ said Prof. Felix Mahfoud of Saarland University Hospital and chairman of the Arterial Hypertension Working Group of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK), who served as study investigator for the RADIANCE-HTN SOLO and TRIO trials. โ€œWe are pleased to be one of the first hospitals in Europe to offer renal denervation with ultrasound.โ€

In Leipzig, the first procedure was successfully performed at the Heart Center Leipzig at the University Clinic for Cardiology. There, Prof. Dr. Philipp Lurz and PD Dr. Karl Fengler led the RADIOSOUND trial, and both have participated in the RADIANCE-HTN SOLO and TRIO studies in patients with uncontrolled hypertension.

Paradise ultrasound renal denervation is a device-based, minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of high blood pressure. During the procedure, which usually takes less than an hour, the Paradise catheter is placed in the renal artery. Typically, three doses of ultrasound energy lasting a few seconds are applied to each of the main arteries leading to the kidneys. The ultrasound emissions denervate the renal nerves and cause a reduction in sympathetic nervous system activity, which can result in lower blood pressure.

In September 2021, the European Society of Hypertension published an updated position paper stating that renal denervation โ€œis effective in reducing or interrupting the sympathetic signals to the kidneys and decreasing whole body sympathetic activity.โ€ The society noted that five independent sham-controlled randomized clinical trialsโ€”including RADIANCE-HTN SOLO and TRIOโ€”provide โ€œconclusive evidenceโ€ that renal denervation can lower ambulatory and office blood pressure both in patients with and without concomitant antihypertensive medication.

โ€œThe Paradise System has generated a significant body of clinical evidence in the ACHIEVE, RADIOSOUND, RADIANCE-HTN SOLO and TRIO studiesโ€”executed over a number of years in centers across the U.S. and Europeโ€”showing a significant lowering of blood pressure in patients with uncontrolled hypertension,โ€ said ReCor President and CEO Andrew M. Weiss. โ€œThe Paradise treatment offers patients and their caregivers a new option to treat their hypertension. We are pleased to make this new therapy available in Germany, and we look forward to introducing the Paradise System to more European countries soon.โ€

Hypertension is one of the leading contributors to disease burden worldwide, leading to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, impaired quality of life, and increased cost to health systems. Based on meta-analyses of randomized trials using pharmacological treatments, a decrease of 10 mmHg in office systolic blood pressure is estimated to lower the incidence of cardiovascular events by 20%. Despite the broad availability of antihypertensive medications, access to drugs and adherence remain challenging for patients and physicians.

About ReCor Medical, Inc.

ReCor Medical, headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., is a medical technology company focused on transforming the management of hypertension, the leading cardiovascular risk factor in the world. With its Paradise System ReCor has pioneered the minimally invasive use of ultrasound in renal denervation to treat patients with hypertension. The Paradise System is an investigational device in the United States. It is approved for sale in the EU and bears a CE mark. The company has completed two randomized, sham-controlled studies of the Paradise System in patients with both moderate hypertension and those resistant to standard medical therapies. ReCor is currently conducting its FDA IDE pivotal study, RADIANCE-II, and pending successful completion, will submit for PMA approval to market the therapy in the United States.

All-in-One ModMed Otolaryngology Helps Promote Patient Satisfaction Even as Pandemic Shifts Priorities

What To Do When the Doctor Says It's All in Your Head

Giving patients a sense of control over their ENT care could be more important than ever during this time of continuing COVID-19 uncertainty. The many shifting priorities for ENT practicesโ€”such as keeping up with the demands of the digital patient, automating solutions for staff, and keeping up with regulatory changesโ€”has made it more difficult to engage and reassure patients to continue to seek care when necessary and follow-up accordingly to ensure good outcomes.

โ€œFrom before the patient arrives until after the bill is paid, the right ENT software can make it easier for ENTs and their staff to promote patient satisfaction.โ€

Today at the AAO-HNSF 2021 Annual Meeting & OTO Experience, healthcare technology leader ModMedยฎ is showcasing its latest patient engagement solutions that are delivering high value to ENTs and patients.

Practice Manager Lynn Schultz of Cass Street Ear, Nose & Throat shared, โ€œPatient Reminders is a great feature that saves us time because we call fewer people and patients really like it. We can search for unconfirmed appointments and follow up with those patientsโ€”it takes the guesswork out.โ€

โ€œThe patient engagement tools offered by Modernizing Medicine have helped improve the patient experience,โ€ said Crystal Johnson, Operations Director of The Ear, Nose & Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery Center. โ€œThe ability to sign forms electronically saves paper, expenses and time. The Patient Portal has completely enhanced our office flow. We also use Patient Reminders that are compatible with PM. I love this variable because itโ€™s helped to decrease our no-show rate and increase communication with our patients.โ€

Patient Engagement tools including advanced online check-in, waiting room kiosk sign-in, patient portal access and follow-up care reminders can help make patients feel more connected to their healthcare and alleviate strain on practitioners.

โ€œEngaging patients at clinic check-ins and follow-ups can naturally fall to the wayside when practices are focusing on acute challenges like staff and patient safety, lower revenue and patient retention during a pandemic,โ€ said Dr. David Lehman, MD and Senior Medical Director of Otolaryngology at ModMed. โ€œFrom before the patient arrives until after the bill is paid, the right ENT software can make it easier for ENTs and their staff to promote patient satisfaction.โ€

There are measurable benefits of using Patient Engagement tools:

  • The Pocket Patientโ„ข app – Provides patients a convenient way to launch telehealth appointments with high-resolution video chat capability. Over 100,000 apps were downloaded within the first month post-launch and it received a 4.3/5 rating from 21,631 patients surveyed via the in-app survey.
  • Patient Reminders – Automated appointment confirmation system that reminds patients about appointments and empowers them to reschedule through text. Using text messages to confirm appointments has been shown to be 295% more effective than phone calls, and some practices are seeing a reduction in their patient no-show rates by 40-50% (source: Relatient).
  • ModMed?Kiosk – Allows patients to complete forms online which helps streamline patient check-ins and cut down staffโ€™s data entry. Patients complete their forms using an iPad making it so staff only needs to review and accept that data.
  • Patient Portal – Through a secure online portal, patients can access certified health information, schedule appointments, review and update medical records, access lab results and make payments.

Additionally, ModMed launched its Premium Patient Connect service to practices using its EHR, EMAยฎ and patient engagement tools. Premium Patient Connect adds an extra layer of efficiency for both patients and staff by streamlining the intake process and giving patients online and mobile access to review and manage their accounts.

For ENT practices that adopt patient engagement technology, it presents a natural opportunity to educate and communicate with patients. It also provides a chance to remind patients that care is still available and to reinforce that best practices for safety remain paramount during the COVID-19 pandemic.

About ModMed

ModMed is transforming healthcare by placing doctors and patients at the center of care through an intelligent, specialty-specific cloud platform. With our electronic health records (EHR) and practice management (PM) systems, and our revenue cycle management (RCM) services, our all-in-one solution empowers specialty medical practices to do their best work by providing them clinical, financial and operational software solutions designed to enable better, more personalized patient care.
