Gloucestershire NHS Trust partners with Civica to improve patient care

Prospero Health Partners With GrandPad to Improve Access to Care for Vulnerable Seniors During COVID-19 Surge

Patients supported by Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust (GHC) will receive more responsive and flexible care following a new partnership with global software leader Civica.

The cloud Cito Electronic Document Records Management Solution (EDRMS) will offer clinicians instant access to vital patient information, including larger documents, photos and videos which were previously inaccessible from its Electronic Patient Record (EPR) systems. Better viewing, searching and filtering of document content will give clinicians rapid direct access to the information they need to provide patients with the best possible care.

GHC, which was formed in October 2019 to provide integrated mental health, physical health and learning disability services, has signed a five-year contract with Civica. The partnership will see Civica deliver the Cito EDRMS to the Trustโ€™s 5,800 staff alongside the digitisation of 300,000 paper health records.

The Cito EDRMS platform will be deployed in the cloud to support expansion, flexibility and increased security, in line with the Trustโ€™s digital roadmap to become a cloud-first organisation. It will deliver a real-time, single view of each patientโ€™s records by unifying and structuring these into customisable electronic health records.

Cito will fully integrate into GHCโ€™s main EPR systems as well as Gloucestershireโ€™s Joining Up Your Information (JUYI) shared care record. This will allow health and care professionals in Gloucestershire to access the latest information, with all letters and reports available via one shared system.

Ruth Wethey, Head of Clinical Systems at Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust said: โ€œPartnering with Civica on this new clinical system will result in better patient care across the Trust. As we come out of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health services are under intense pressure and Cito will give us better information at the point of care to offer the best treatment quickly and efficiently.โ€

Steve Brain, Executive Director, Health and Care, Civica added: โ€œOur digital health platform will help clinicians to access both new and historical records really easily, freeing up time to spend focussed on patient care. Weโ€™re delighted to be supporting Gloucestershire with this crucial clinical systems programme, using smart cloud software to improve safety and efficiencies across the Trust.โ€

The latest Cito deployment at GHC follows recent major contracts with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Guyโ€™s and St Thomasโ€™ NHS Foundation Trust and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

First Gynecological Procedures Performed with Medtronic Hugo Robotic-Assisted Surgery System

First Gynecological Procedures Performed with Medtronic Hugo Robotic-Assisted Surgery System

Medtronic plc, the global leader in medical technology, announced the first gynecological (GYN) procedures with the Hugoโ„ข robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system. The six cases included hysterectomies and myomectomies performed by Salomรณn Zebede, M.D., and Juan Carlos Lรณpez, M.D., last week at Pacifica Salud Hospital in Panama City, Panama.

“As the cornerstone of our new robotic surgery program, the Hugo RAS system is playing a critical role in bringing the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients in our region,” said Dr. Zebede. “It was energizing to perform the very first GYN procedure with the Hugo system, and encouraging to experience firsthand the possibility this technology brings to women’s health.”

Globally, more than 60% of hysterectomies are performed as open procedures,1 even though minimally invasive surgery offers fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster return to normal activities.2-4

Pacifica Salud is the latest institution to join Medtronic’s Partners in Possibility Program, a group of pioneering hospitals that will be among the first in the world to use the Hugo RAS system. Earlier this month, the hospital announced its first five urological cases with the Hugo RAS system. Pacifica Salud is also an early adopter of Touch Surgeryโ„ข Enterprise, a cloud-based surgical video capture solution that allows surgeons to seamlessly record, analyze, and share surgical video.

We are witnessing the dawn of a new era in robotic surgery,” said Mr. Rafael Cohen, CEO of Pacifica Salud. “That is made possible by the Hugo system, our partnership with Medtronic, and our talented team at Pacifica Salud.”

The Hugo RAS system โ€” Medtronic’s solution to historic cost and utilization barriers that have kept surgical robotics out of reach for many hospitals โ€” is a modular, multi-quadrant platform designed for a broad range of soft-tissue procedures. In June, Medtronic announced the first clinical procedures with the Hugo system took place in Santiago, Chile. That marked the beginning of the Hugo RAS system patient registry, which is collecting clinical data to support regulatory submissions around the world.

“As an OB/GYN, I’m incredibly passionate about advancing women’s health and wellbeing through less invasive solutions that improve outcomes and enable a better quality of life,” said Carla Peron, M.D., chief medical officer of the Surgical Robotics business, which is part of Medical Surgical Portfolio at Medtronic. “The first GYN procedures with the Hugo RAS system represent an exciting step toward expanding access to more treatment options, including the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery, to women everywhere.”

Medtronic has a longstanding history of making a positive impact on women’s health through technology. The Hugo RAS system joins a portfolio of gynecological products designed to enable less invasive surgical treatment of a range of conditions including abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids, and endometrial cancer.

“I’m proud of the work we’re doing at Medtronic with our healthcare partners around the world to improve women’s health,” said Megan Rosengarten, president of Surgical Robotics. “Advancing access for women to minimally invasive surgical care is a great responsibility and privilege, which makes today’s announcement about the Hugo system all the more meaningful.”

The Hugo RAS system is not cleared or approved in the U.S. or Europe. Regulatory requirements of individual countries and regions will determine availability and approval or clearance timelines. Touch Surgery Enterprise is available in the U.S. and Europe; it is not intended to direct surgery, or aid in diagnosis or treatment of a disease or condition.

9 Emerging Trends in the World of Nursing 2021

The healthcare world has massively changed and adapted over the past year. With the pandemic, nurses and other professionals within the industry were flung unexpectedly into the liamelight. But this new attention on the medical field is opening up the potential for drastic, positive change for both patients and nurses.

In this guide, weโ€™re going to dive into a number of emerging nursing trends for 2021 and beyond.

More students will choose to study online

The Committee on the Future of Nursing provided the Institute of Medicine with a number of recommendations to improve working conditions for nurses. One suggestion was to increase the number of nurses in the workforce who hold a BSN degree by 30%.

Now, several states across the US have implemented laws that require licensed nurses to earn their BSN within 10 years.

In light of this, and in light of the pandemic, many nurses and non-nurses are looking to pursue higher education. Click here to see the range of online nursing degree courses on offer at Carson-Newman. These courses allow nurses to study for their degree while staying in full-time work. This is the perfect solution to ensure that as many nurses as possible are able to qualify without contributing to the shortage of nurses in the workforce.

COVID-19 has also limited the number of students allowed onto campus courses, meaning online degrees are becoming a hugely popular choice for nurses and other aspiring students.

The demand for Family Nurse Practitioners is higher than ever

The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates that there will be a shortage of 55,200 primary care physicians by 2032. This is down to a number of factors, one of which is the USโ€™s aging population. Another is the fact that rural hospitals have either closed or are at risk of closing โ€“ making access to healthcare for societyโ€™s most vulnerable even harder.

To bridge the gap, there is now more demand for Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs). Some states are turning to the idea of allowing FNPs the authority to have their own full practices, which allow those in rural areas to access healthcare once again. Nurse Practitioners are able to offer the same services as GPs, performing check-ups, physicals and prescribing medication to those that otherwise would be stuck on waiting lists or struggling to get an appointment.

Full practice authority for Nurse Practitioners will become the norm

To manage the shortage of physicians, more and more states will allow FNPs full practice authority. Currently, 28 states are on board, while others require a supervising physician in place. More pressure is being added to the remaining states to follow suit.

Unprecedented times call for unprecedented growth

One major problem the pandemic highlighted was the significant shortage of Registered Nurses across the globe. As the Baby Boomer generation reaches retirement age, this shortage is only going to get worse. There will be fewer nurses and more seniors to care for.

Pairing the aging population with the number of nurses retiring and the shortage of primary care physicians creates a huge problem in the medical field โ€“ with nurses and FNPs expected to bridge the gap.

However, another issue lies in the shortage of nurse educators. Without people to teach new students, the shortage of nurses in the workforce cannot increase.

After a year of publicity, there is hope that there will be a significant uptake in online degrees and nursing qualifications so that new graduates can fill the roles the country so desperately needs.

Prior to the pandemic, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that nursing occupations would grow by 12% by 2028, with 371,500 new jobs added in the final year.

RN Salaries will increase

The financial impact of the pandemic has been detrimental across a number of industries โ€“ especially the healthcare sector. Despite this, most nurses have benefitted from the same salary or a steady increase. Nurses with a degree can also enjoy a much higher salary than those without. Nurses in the US are already paid some of the best nursing wages in the world, but with the high demand and staff shortages, these salaries are set to stay steady or increase.

The Nurse Licensure Compact will give more freedom to nurses

The Nurse Licensure Compact makes it much easier for nurses to cross state lines and work elsewhere without re-registering or re-qualifying. Established in 2018, there is hope that over the next few years, more and more states will join the compact, giving nurses the freedom to fill gaps and shortages across different states. Currently, 34 states have enacted the compact, with others are approving partial implementation.

Telehealth will continue to make healthcare more accessible

With the need for social distancing over the past year, along with organizations trying to find a solution to serving more rural areas, telehealth advancements will continue.

Chatbots, video conferencing, and other telehealth technologies allow patients to access healthcare, schedule appointments, request medication, and see their test results without booking a physical appointment with the GP. This has been lifesaving during the pandemic but will continue to help more and more people access services in the future.

Bilingual nurses will be more valued in the workplace

According to the US Census, over 350 languages are spoken by families across the country, with Spanish being the second most popular language.

Nurses that speak a fluent second language could benefit from more freedom in the job field. Employers will likely find bilingual nurses more attractive in areas where multiple languages are spoken.

A holistic approach to care will become the core focus

The holistic approach to care considers the whole patient; their individual physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental strengths and weaknesses. The amount of evidence to prove that holistic care is the way forward is increasing, meaning more and more organizations will look to implement the approach long term. Holistic care is now taught through MSN and FNP degrees, making the learning more accessible for nurses.

Nowadays nursing is getting more and more popular among students. Do youย probably need help with nursing writing? You can check nursing essay writing servicesย hereย provided by professional academic writersย to get your papers written from scratch.

Itโ€™s an exciting time to join the nursing workforce. With advancements in technology and education, paired with increasing salaries and more autonomy, thereโ€™s no knowing where a career in nursing could take you.

Great Cycle Challenge Receives Support from Zebra Technologies; Marks Fifth Anniversary Raising Money for Childhood Cancer Research

Childrenโ€™s Cancer Research Fund (CCRF) announced the support of Zebra Technologies, an innovator at the front line of business with solutionsโ€ฏand partnersโ€ฏthat deliverโ€ฏa performance edge. The company will sponsor CCRFโ€™s flagship fundraiser โ€“ the Great Cycle Challenge USA (GCC), taking place this September in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This year, Zebra expects to recruit 200+ riders for its team with a goal of ย pedaling a collective 20,000 miles.

Zebraโ€™s support began with one employee back in 2015 โ€“ a learning consultant seeking a โ€œride anywhere, anytimeโ€ cycling event that benefited a good cause. He recruited nine Zebra colleagues to join a team in 2017 and things quickly escalated. Over the last five years, nearly 350 Zebra employees have cycled 63,500 miles and raised more than $100,000 to help researchers find a cure for childhood cancer.

โ€œZebra Technologies is pleased to again support the Great Cycle Challenge,โ€ said Therese Van Ryne, Global Public Relations and Philanthropy Director, Zebra Technologies. โ€œWe encourage our employees to get involved in their communities by lending voluntary support to programs that enrich the quality of life and opportunities for local residents. We applaud those who are giving their time to support the Childrenโ€™s Cancer Research Fund in its mission to save lives.โ€

GCC riders set personal mileage and fundraising goals and ask their friends, family and colleagues to sponsor them. Participants accumulate miles where and when it is convenient for them, whether it is on the road, a trail or a stationary bike. They also may create or join group rides in their communities.

โ€œIt is because of partners like Zebra Technologies that weโ€™re able to jumpstart more groundbreaking research that will one day lead to a cure for childhood cancer,โ€ said Daniel Gumnit, CEO, Childrenโ€™s Cancer Research Fund. โ€œZebraโ€™s innovative approach to philanthropy is impressive, and we look forward to its teamโ€™s growing impact on the event.โ€

Great Cycle Challenge USA began in 2015 to fight childhood cancer. Every year, more than 15,000 American children are diagnosed with the disease and itโ€™s the leading cause of death by illness in children. In six years, the Great Cycle Challenge USA community of 350,000 riders from all 50 states have pedaled more than 24.8 million miles while raising more than $39 million in support of research to develop better treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer. This year, the event hopes to raise more than US $10 million.

5 Signs You Need To See A Gastroenterologist

5 Signs You Need To See An Endoscopy Specialist

There are certain problems with your gastrointestinal (GI) tract that calls for more than just the care of a regular physician. Specific situations that require the expertise of a trained specialist to come up with a proper diagnosis arise from time to time. Oftentimes, the right person for the job is a gastrointestinal specialist, or a gastroenterologist.

These experts focus their medical work on conditions that affect the digestive tract, including the rectum, stomach, colon, esophagus, pancreas, and even the liver and intestines. Given the important function these parts of your body play, itโ€™s only right to never turn a blind eye if there is a need to seek immediate medical care concerning ailments affecting them.

To help guide you, here are five signs you need to see a gastroenterologist as soon as possible:

  1. Bloating And Excess Gas

Occasional bloating can be considered acceptable or normal at times. This can happen right after youโ€™ve just had a full meal, for instance. But, if you regularly experience abdominal bloating and youโ€™re passing out excess gas more often than before, then itโ€™s best to consult a gastroenterologist. If the specialist determines that you need to get an endoscopy, you may be referred to a gastrointestinal endoscopy specialist like Doctor Kavin Nanda.

Usually, regular bloating and excess gas may be a sign of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which is a form of digestive intolerance to certain food items.

Regular bloating can be a big problem, especially when accompanied by other symptoms like a drastic change in your weight or changes in your stoolโ€™s color and consistency.

  1. Abnormal Bowel Movements

A normal bowel movement is said to be one of the epitomes of good health. If you have normal bowel movements but experienced sudden changes that you canโ€™t seem to explain, it may be a sign for you to consult a doctor. If this change persists, your doctor may refer you to a gastroenterologist for further diagnosis.

Abnormal bowel movements can be classified into the following:

  • Diarrhea. A runny stool once in a while is normal, especially when youโ€™ve recently had an upset stomach. But, if your bowel stays runny for days, then it could be a problem. Only a specialist can diagnose with certainty what the exact problem is.
  • Constipation. You’re said to be constipated when you empty your bowels less than thrice a week. A doctor can determine what the root cause is and find out if your constipation isnโ€™t a sign of any serious health problem.
  1. Rectal Bleeding

The presence of blood in oneโ€™s stool isnโ€™t normal. If you have observed your stool having traces of blood in it, itโ€™s necessary to check it out with a specialist. Usually, blood in the stool can mean thereโ€™s bleeding somewhere in your digestive tract, intestines, or rectal area. Itโ€™s only through an endoscopy that a thorough check can be done to determine the source of the bleeding.

Some of the common causes of rectal bleeding may include:

This isnโ€™t something for you to diagnose on your own. It’s best to see a doctor to be certain if there are any serious health issues that must be addressed while theyโ€™re still in their early stages.

  1. Frequent Heartburn Episodes

Occasional episodes of heartburn are said to be normal. Itโ€™s usually caused by eating foods that are either acidic, spicy, or too fatty. But if you experience heartburn frequently, it can be a sign of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). If left untreated, the acid caused by GERD can lead to damage in your stomach lining, and even more complications in the long run.

Heartburn is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Burning feeling in your chest
  • Sour, acidic, or salty taste behind your throat.

Usually, heartburn can be treated with over-the-counter medicines. But, if your heartburn becomes frequent, a proper medical assessment should be carried out by a gastroenterologist just to be sure it isnโ€™t a symptom of any other underlying disease.

  1. Nausea And Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are medical conditions that typically arenโ€™t a main cause of serious concern. It can simply be the bodyโ€™s response after an allergy; but in more severe cases, it may also be a sign of a serious gastrointestinal disease.

Usually, nausea and vomiting can easily be managed at home without the need for any serious medication or treatment needed. But you have to see a doctor when the following circumstances are present:

  • Your nausea is accompanied by crushing chest pain, jaw pain, and pain in your arm.
  • Your nausea comes with severe headaches, difficulty breathing, and confusion.

If you suspect a more serious health issue, you may have to consult a gastroenterologist.

Conclusion

Considering all of the information shared above, the most important takeaway is to always see a doctor whenever you experience any abnormal symptom in your body, including your stomach and digestive area.

Even if you think and consider the symptoms are just fleeting, never resort to self-medication. It’s best to ask for the opinion of the experts and specialists who have years of education and training under their belt to prevent any of your would-be minor symptoms from escalating to more serious health concerns.

More so, once youโ€™ve made the decision to seek the help of a gastroenterologist in your local area, always be sure youโ€™re working with someone with the proper qualifications and choose the ones that offer services that are nothing less than the best.

CareLineLive’s New Features Drive Preventative Interventions and Provide Vital Insights for GPs and Emergency Services

CareLineLive's New Features Drive Preventative Interventions and Provide Vital Insights for GPs and Emergency Services

CareLineLive, the all-in-one homecare management software provider, announced new features within its cloud-based platform to widen the circle of care to external stakeholders, such as GPs and emergency services, and help carers become more responsive and proactive to potential issues. Part of the research and development that allowed these additions to the platform was enabled by funding from a UK government grant from Innovate UK.

The new capabilities allow carers to easily record observations on their clientsโ€™ physical and mental welfare, for example meals & fluid intake and blood pressure & glucose readings, meaning that carers can monitor their clientsโ€™ health effectively. New features will also allow carers to take images to log potential issues, as well as providing agencies with the ability to follow the correct procedures and to record any incidents, giving other stakeholders comprehensive information about any concerns reported.

With the CareLineLive Care Circle portal already helping to make families, friends, agencies and carers better informed and connected, the new updates will extend the circle of care to other stakeholders such as GPs and emergency services, who will have greater visibility on individual client needs. Home care managers will be able to assign roles, detailing who can see what information on a client within the Care Circle. One feature includes a QR code being made available to emergency services in a clientโ€™s home, so that they can instantly see details, on a one-off basis, including clientsโ€™ medication and other care details, empowering quick and efficient treatment.

For agencies and carers, the improved data insights from observations taken with the CareLineLive Carer Companion App will allow agencies to understand trends and foresee potential problems before they arise. Not only will this provide better person-centred care for clients, but it also will help to ease the burden on the NHS, with fewer older and vulnerable people needing to be hospitalised in emergency circumstances.

Josh Hough, MD and Founder, CareLineLive, commented: โ€œOur new product features will support homecare agencies in realising the benefits of becoming more data-driven and help them to make proactive decisions on a clientโ€™s welfare and care. Too often, clients receiving care at home are hospitalised for issues that could have been alleviated through earlier intervention. Our technology is changing the way care is delivered for the better, by ensuring that agencies and carers can preempt any potential problems.โ€

Hough continued: โ€œBy making it easier for GPs, emergency services and other stakeholders to have access to real-time information about an individual’s physical and mental health, we hope that our technology will begin to have a greater impact on the health and social care sector as a whole. With NHS teams still battling the pandemic, itโ€™s important that we help to reduce hospital admissions where possible and we look forward to seeing the positive impact that our new software features have going forward.โ€

CareLineLiveโ€™s all-in-one, cloud-based homecare management software can be accessed anywhere and anytime, from any internet-enabled device. The new updates will be available from the end of July.

Verina Daly, Managing Director and Owner at Verina Daly Care, commented: โ€œEven before the pandemic, carers were holding back a tsunami of pressure every day. CareLineLiveโ€™s solution has significantly eased this pressure by improving the way we schedule, log information and manage clientsโ€™ visits. From small things like carers letting family members know that their loved one will need more milk later that day, to ensuring that policies and compliance are adhered to, CareLineLive has made a huge positive impact on our agency.โ€

The Loss of Keyshia Cole’s Mother Emphasizes the Number of Overdoses during the COVID-19 Pandemic

American singer, songwriter, actress and television producer Keyshia Cole discussed the passing of her mother, Frankie Lons, on social media. Lons, who battled a substance use disorder (SUD), died from an overdose. During the funeral, Cole and her family released white doves in her motherโ€™s memory and had bouquets of white and purple balloons. Cole, who has publicly shared her own struggles with addiction and sobriety, said she tried to spend as much time with her mother as she could. โ€œI know her spirit was no longer [here] in the physical. I just hope she was able to see that we came together in celebration of her name, the laughs, love, and honesty she brought to this world,โ€ wrote Cole on Instagram. Coleโ€™s mother was one of many individuals who have struggled with SUD during the COVID-19 pandemic, which makes events like International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, 2021 even more important.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 93,000 people in the United States have died from drug overdoses in 2020 alone, which is the highest number ever recorded for one year. This is a 30 percent increase from the previous year. Of the estimated 93,000 individuals who died from overdoses, 3,046 were New Jersey residents. Data from the Department of Law and Public Safety indicate that from January 1, 2021 to June 30, 2021, there have been 1,626 suspected overdoses deaths in New Jersey and 5,568 administrations of naloxone, a potentially life-saving opioid antidote that can be administered to individuals experiencing overdoses. The opioid epidemic together with the stress and isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly contributed to this statistic. In July 2021, Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation (S3491) that allows New Jersey residents to legally purchase naloxone, which will help save many lives. State-regulated insurance companies will be able to cover the cost of naloxone and health officials hope that it will be available at pharmacies, schools and other public facilities. Despite a current shortage in the manufacturing of naloxone, advocates hope that this anticipated legislation, as well as federal regulatory changes designed to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction, will make this antidote more accessible.

In July, Governor Murphy signed legislation (S3803) under which training will be provided to paramedics so they will be able to carry and administer buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is a Food and

More Overdoses during the COVID-19 Pandemic/Page 2 of 2

Drug Administration approved medication to treat opioid use disorder along with counseling and other behavioral therapies to provide a whole-person approach to care. Since buprenorphine can lead to abuse and over-dependence, there are special guidelines as to how it can be prescribed and utilized. In 2019, New Jersey became the first state to allow some first responders to administer buprenorphine.

โ€œThere has been tremendous progress made to prevent overdose deaths, especially with making medication-assisted treatment and naloxone readily available. However, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical work that still needs to be done. The loss of approximately 93,000 individuals is simply unfathomable. Even the loss of one life would be too many. Days like International Overdose Awareness Day allow us to remember those who lost their lives to a substance use disorder (SUD), cope with the grief of losing their loved ones, reduce the stigma that is associated with SUD and overdosing and especially to take action to ensure that more individuals and families do not have to experience tragic events like this,โ€ said Debra L. Wentz, PhD, President and CEO, New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies.

International Overdose Awareness Day is the worldโ€™s largest annual campaign to end overdose that provides an opportunity for individuals, such as Keyshia Cole, to mourn the loss of their loved ones publicly without a feeling of guilt or shame. It also provides an excellent opportunity to educate community members about fatal and non-fatal overdoses, as well as the impact that both have, and provide information about services that are available. This can also be a day of action to discuss overdose prevention and drug policy and express support for evidence-based policies and practices to prevent and reduce drug-related harm. These actions will allow individuals struggling with SUD to know that they are valued as much as anybody else.

Understanding the Types of Breast Reconstruction Surgeries

Understanding the Types of Breast Reconstruction Surgeries

One of the most devastating effects of breast cancer is mastectomy. Sometimes, patients are left with scars and a lack of feeling in the chest area due to nerve damage. This can lead to feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem.

Fortunately, there are three types of reconstructive surgery that can help restore some form of normalcy for women who have gone through this experience: implant reconstruction, flap reconstruction, or tissue expander/implant combination.

Types Of Breast Reconstruction Surgeries

There is a lot to unpack and understand about the different types of surgeries. Itโ€™s important that you understand fully all the reconstruction options available to you. Reconstruction surgery is something that each patient has to go over and decide for themselves. Each option will work better for some than others.

Implant Reconstruction

The patient is given a silicone implant, and the incisions are then closed at the end. This procedure can be completed in an hour or two with minimal complications, but it does have some limitations such as not being able to breastfeed if you plan on doing so down the line.

Flap Reconstruction

If you are a candidate, this surgery involves moving skin from the abdomen or thigh to close up where the nipple should be. This is done by taking tissue and reshaping it using stitches in order to provide an external appearance that mimics what was lost during chemotherapy or radiation treatment for breast cancer.

Tissue Expander/Implant Combination

To create this surgery, a tissue expander is inserted under the nipple to expand what’s left. The surgeon then adds silicone implants inside for additional volume. There are many benefits of a combination flap and implant reconstruction, such as it can be done at one time with no incision on the breast itself, or in some cases, there may not be any scars from this surgery.

Advantages and Disadvantages Of Breast Reconstruction

Different types of breast reconstruction surgeries can help restore some form of normalcy for women who have gone through breast cancer treatment, but each one has its own pros and cons to consider before you make a decision.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Implant Reconstruction
  • This procedure can be completed in an hour or two with minimal complications, but it does have some limitations such as not being able to breastfeed if you plan on doing so down the line.
