CommonSpirit Health Expands Behavioral Health Support through Primary Care Collaboration in Partnership with Concert Health

CommonSpirit Health Expands Behavioral Health Support through Primary Care Collaboration in Partnership with Concert Health

CommonSpirit Health, a national nonprofit health system serving communities at more than 1,000 care sites and 137 hospitals across 21 states, announced it is offering new access to support for depression and anxiety within the primary care setting through a partnership with Concert Health, a leading behavioral health medical group. This model will place CommonSpiritโ€™s primary care physicians at the center of all physical and behavioral aspects of care by connecting patients with Concert Healthโ€™s remotely located behavioral health care managers who provide therapy and develop a behavioral health care plan for each patient.

Access to behavioral health services in the U.S. is challenging at the best of times, and for patients, the lack of care can have far-reaching consequences. More than 115 million Americans live in an area where there is no access to a mental health professional. As a result, many seek care from their primary care provider, with whom they often have a long-term, trusted relationship. In fact, a study found that primary care providers prescribed 79 percent of antidepressant medications. That strong relationship and lack of access to specialty mental health services often leaves primary care providers managing depression and anxiety, without the professional support they need to address their patientsโ€™ conditions. Given the proven connection between physical and mental health, it is essential that patients receive the appropriate care and treatment for all of their health needs โ€” physical and mental โ€” in one place, which is most convenient in primary care.

An integrated approach is particularly critical for patients with multiple health conditions. One recent report found that high-risk patients require up to 6.2 times more spending on medical care when they have an active behavioral health diagnosis.

The partnership between CommonSpirit and Concert Health is based on Collaborative Care Management, an evidenced-based model proven to improve behavioral health conditions such as depression and anxiety within the primary care setting.

CommonSpiritโ€™s primary care physicians will now manage all aspects of patient care by diagnosing depression and anxiety in patients and making warm handoffs to a dedicated group of Concert Healthโ€™s behavioral health care managers. The Concert Health care managers develop the behavioral health care plan and serve as a liaison between Concert Healthโ€™s psychiatric provider and the primary care physician who both review the patientโ€™s progress and make needed adjustments in care. The primary care physician also prescribes medication recommended by the behavioral health care team. Patients meet regularly with their care manager via phone, video visit, or in-person at their primary care location.

Collaborative Care is already a covered benefit for Medicare, most commercial insurance, and under Medicaid in 18 states. CommonSpirit is already working with Medicaid partners in California to ensure it can offer this care to all patients who need it.

โ€œTo bridge long-standing gaps between mental and physical health care, we need to turn to evidence-based models that integrate these areas of care and provide real outcomes. Especially for the vulnerable or underserved, seeking behavioral health care in the community can be challenging due to stigma, lack of access, and prohibitive costs,โ€ said Christine Brocato, vice president of strategic innovation at CommonSpirit Health. โ€œBy offering coordinated behavioral health services from Concert Health to CommonSpiritโ€™s patients utilizing the Collaborative Care model, we have one team working together to meet all of the patientโ€™s medical and behavioral health care needs in a matter of hours, rather than fragmenting care through referrals that take weeks. Care simply must be inclusive of mind and body.โ€

โ€œConcert Health is proud to support CommonSpiritโ€™s commitment to comprehensive, outcome-based care for people with behavioral health conditions,โ€ said Virna Little, LCSW, PsyD, co-founder and chief operating officer of Concert Health. โ€œWe are excited to partner with CommonSpiritโ€™s outstanding physicians to make these services available to improve health outcomes for their patients.โ€

Powered by Concert Health, the following new capabilities will expand CommonSpiritโ€™s primary care services:ย

Patients are screened for depression and anxiety using evidence-based tools: Without screening, over half of people struggling with behavioral health concerns never get the care they need โ€“ either because they lack a diagnosis or donโ€™t realize what it is that they are experiencing.
Instead of external referrals, primary care providers can make warm handoffs to behavioral health providers: CommonSpiritโ€™s primary care providers will work closely with a dedicated team of Concert Healthโ€™s behavioral health care managers to provide support in less than 48 hours.
Patients can receive evidence-based psychotherapy interventions at their preferred location: Behavioral health care managers provide a mix of medication management, goal setting, and evidence-based approaches. Patients are given the choice of engaging via video visit, telephone, or in-person care.
The care team is aligned around measurement-based care: A core part of the Collaborative Care model includes regularly assessing behavioral health symptoms, much like is done for diabetes (A1Cs) or hypertension (blood pressure). Concert Healthโ€™s team regularly assesses patientsโ€™ symptom severity using evidenced-based tools like the Personal Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ9), General Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD7), and Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and alters patientsโ€™ treatment plans.

Psychiatric consultations support the primary care provider: For those patients who need more support, Concert Healthโ€™s consulting psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners speak weekly with the behavioral health team to review information and make written recommendations to the primary care provider to support their decision-making around diagnosis, medications, and dosage.

The organizations have initially launched these integrated services in Bakersfield, California to help address the areaโ€™s high unmet need for behavioral and mental health care. The program is expected to scale to additional CommonSpirit care sites across the central California region during the remainder of the year as well as to additional markets in 2021.

GE Healthcare Introduces New Edge Technology Designed to Give Clinicians Rapid Access to Critical Data

GE Healthcare announces U.S. FDA approval of macrocyclic MRI contrast agent Clariscan injection for intravenous use

GE Healthcare introduced Edison HealthLink, new edge computing technology designed specifically for the needs of healthcare providers, that allows clinicians to collect, analyze and act upon critical data closer to its source. With 10 applications already available through Edison HealthLink โ€“ including TrueFidelity image reconstruction, Mural Virtual Care and CT Smart Subscription โ€“ the solution gives healthcare providers another entry point into the Edison ecosystem.

While COVID-19 has accelerated the adoption of cloud technology, analyzing data from a distance can pose various risks to operational efficiency and patient care. Concerns around bandwidth, network and latency challenges remain when a matter of seconds could determine the outcome for a patient. For example, time is critical when diagnosing and treating strokeโ€”around 2 million brain cells die every minute1 until blood flow is restored, increasing the risk of permanent damage. Running advanced post-processing software at the edge to evaluate brain scans allows clinicians to analyze and act upon critical data without sending it to the cloud, enabling rapid decision making.

โ€œCOVID-19 has accelerated industry-wide trends with implications for the future of care delivery. Itโ€™s time to apply these trends and use them to modernize the current health system infrastructure,โ€ said Amit Phadnis, Chief Digital Officer, GE Healthcare. โ€œAs more care delivery becomes virtual and as more healthcare data moves to the cloud, technologies like Edison HealthLink provide a bridge, allowing devices to operate on premise, at the edge and in the cloud.โ€

By operating medical devices that connect to Edison HealthLink, health systems can continually receive advanced software updates without requiring new equipment โ€“ essentially extending the life of existing assets.

Built using GEโ€™s deep healthcare domain expertise, Edison HealthLink runs the Edison Health Services software stack, which provides a set of healthcare-specific services โ€“ including HIPAA-compliant data aggregation, connectivity, advanced visualization, AI and non-AI algorithm orchestration โ€“ that developers can leverage to build and deploy clinical applications and workflows. These capabilities, along with other development tools, can serve as the delivery platform for third-party developers with edge applications for the healthcare industry. The Edison Health Service software stack can be deployed at the edge, on premise and in the cloud.

This Edison HealthLink news marks another milestone for GE Healthcareโ€™s Edison ecosystem, which helps GE Healthcare and select strategic partners design, develop, manage, secure and distribute applications and algorithms quickly. Healthcare applications deployed on Edison HealthLink are part of GE Healthcareโ€™s efforts to provide clinicians with tools that help them aggregate data, apply AI and analytics to that data and uncover insights โ€“ empowering clinicians to achieve better patient outcomes, gain efficiency and reduce errors.

Free Yourself From Drug Addiction With These Tips

Free Yourself From Drug Addiction With These Tips

Drug addiction can grip anyone and anywhere. We seem to feel like it is only on TV or on movies or you hear about someone you know, but it is a sadly common issue among many people. The problem with drug addiction is finding ways to combat it that work for you.

Dependency and addiction to substances can be as seemingly harmless as overdoing it on the weekends with friends over drinks or it can be as excruciating as hard drugs. There is no standard for addiction, but there is plenty of help you can get that can work for any kind of dependency. Check out these tips to learn more.

Go to a Rehabilitation Center

Many think that this option is too crazy or extreme, but they fail to remember that addiction is tough to deal with. People do not choose to be addicted to substances, but they can choose to get the professional help they need. Utilizing these resources can provide you with world-class help, which can be in the form of behavioral therapy and a wide cast of people who want to help you get better. Rehab centers and clinics can provide you with the help you need that you may not have ever realized. If you want to take it slow at first, then a support group can help you ease into the world of addiction help.

Discuss Your Thoughts With Loved Ones

Your loved ones are there to help. While some may not understand your situation, most of them will be with you every step of the way. Finding your loved ones, friends or family, who will stick with you through the hard times and the good times of your recovery is necessary to overcome your problem. It is not easy for them to hear about how you feel, your experiences, and your thoughts, and it will not be easy telling them but it is an important part of recovery to be open and honest and to let people in to help you. Your loved ones can be a source of hope when you feel lost, so never take them for granted in the process.

Get Involved With Activities Away From Drugs

It can be tempting to sink back into old habits, but you need to find activities that distance yourself from drugs or substances. People who were dependent on alcohol may want to help volunteer their time at soup kitchens or public events, instead of hanging out at bars or social settings where they may feel tempted to drink. Finding productive activities that help you feel accomplished, proud of yourself, and help other people can be a great way to get away from places or people who are bad influences and open your doors to new, healthy experiences.

Get Active

Just like finding positive influence in social or community activities, you should try to focus on your physical health as much as your mental health. Getting active can really help your body through the healing process by providing strength and improvement. Start off slow with a walk or two a day, even just 30 minutes of exercise, and then start to increase your activity levels. Your body will be healing so do not get discouraged if it takes you longer to run a mile, or lift bigger weights, or feel less breathless during exercise, it is a normal bodily response. Just focus on improving each day and sticking to it to get healthier.

Change Your Diet

Making your new active lifestyle even easier should be supplemented with the proper diet. Drugs and alcohol take a vicious toll on the body so you need to replenish it with the right foods and nutrients.

Vitamins of all kinds, especially C and D, will help improve your mental state and immune system, while protein and healthy sources of fats like nuts or seeds can help get your body back to a healthy state. Your diet plays a big role in your recovery.

Learn About Your Addiction

The last thing on this list is to learn more about your addiction. You are the first-hand experience of this dependency so you know more than most, but you still need to do your research on what the effects are, how it occurs, and why people become addicted to these substances. Learning more about this will help you understand why you deal with this problem and help you get better.

Drug addiction is an affliction that too many have to suffer from every day. While it may be hard to help everyone, it is possible to help you right now. With the tips you see here, you can start your path to recovery and find the life you deserve on the other side.

COVID 19 – Medela’s portable medical surgical and airway suction devices offers safer alternative to piped vacuum systems

COVID 19 - Medela's portable medical surgical and airway suction devices offers safer alternative to piped vacuum systems

Medelaย Healthcare mobile suction devices – a safer alternative to wall vacuum – can help expand critical care capacity and support UK hospitals in the fight against COVID-19.

Used in Europe and worldwide, the companyโ€™s portableย medical suctionย machinesย are designed to provide crucial suction and fluid removal during respiratory treatment provided with ventilators.

Traditionally, hospitals ensure a patientโ€™s airway is clear by utilising suction that relies on central wall piped vacuum. However, guidance published by the National Health Service (NHS) advises hospitals against using piped vacuum to support infectious disease units (IDU) to reduce the risk of virus spread and cross-contamination.

Aย previous study looking at contamination rates for wall-mountedย suction unitsย discovered contamination onย over 30% ofย devices.ย Hence, portable medical suction machines are recommended for COVID-19 care.

Medelaย offers a range of portable suction pumps which areย available with a virus filter capable of reducing cross-contamination from COVID-19 with filtration efficiency of greater than 99.99987%.ย These compact devices offer flexibility to hospitals while reducing the risk of viral transmission.

When used with disposable collection systems, portable suction machines reduce staff exposure to hazardous fluids, while devices equipped with virus filters further reduce risk of cross-contamination and viral exposure to staff.

Rob Rennel,ย Business Unit Manager atย Medelaย comments:ย โ€œMedelaโ€™s range of portableย medicalย surgicalย and airway suction devicesย facilitate the removal of lung secretions inย theย inflammatory process of coronavirus โ€“ offeringย life-saving support to critical care patients, while mitigating risks facing staffย on the frontlines.โ€ย

Dr. Stephen Cole, Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Scotland, adds: โ€œThe new reality is that we will need to rapidly increase intensive care units (ICU) bed capacity within 2- or 3-weeksโ€™ notice. We need to prepare, need to plan, need to stock the hardware that we need such as ventilators, suction pumps and monitors.โ€

While most patients with COVID-19 recover over time without the need for special treatment, in more critical cases the infection can trigger pneumonia, causing the lungs to become more inflamed and fill with fluid.

Research shows approximately 14% of COVID-19 patients require hospitalisation and oxygen support, while a further 5% require admission to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and supportive therapies such as intubation and ventilation.

Standard of care in the ICU requires each patient to be provided with a single suction device, which helps to decrease the risk of lung infections, prolonged hypoxia, and pooling of secretions in the lung.

Aboutย Medela:
Medela, headquartered in Baar (Switzerland) was founded in 1961 and is one of the world’s leading companies in the development and production of breast milk feeding products and medical vacuum technology solutions.ย  In cooperation with renowned researchers, experts and universities,ย Medelaย conducts basic and exploratory research to enhance its product portfolio improve future patient care and the quality of life of our customers.ย Medelaย has 21 subsidiaries in Europe, Americas and Asia and a sales network of independent partners in more than 100 countries. The company runs production and warehouse facilities in Switzerland, the US and China and employs over 1,800 people worldwide.

GE Healthcare Receives FDA Clearance for AI-powered Cardiovascular Ultrasound System

GE Healthcare Receives FDA Clearance for AI-powered Cardiovascular Ultrasound System

GE Healthcare announced U.S. FDA 510k clearance for its Ultra Edition package on Vivid cardiovascular ultrasound systems, which includes new features based on artificial intelligence (AI) that enable clinicians to acquire faster, more repeatable exams consistently.

Methodical assessments of heart function are key in echocardiography but can be tedious and time-consuming to acquire. High quality data acquisition and operator skill are key elements to achieve accurate and complete exams. And, as patients undergo subsequent monitoring exams, the reproducibility of exam assessments is key to identifying improvement or disease progression. Vivid Ultra Edition brings increased efficiencies to the scanning process for reduced exam time through up to 80% fewer clicks, 99% accuracy[4] and less inter-operator variability.

โ€œWe use AI Auto Measure โ€“ 2D, AI Auto Measure โ€“ Spectrum Recognition, and Auto AFI together with Auto EF. We also use Scan Assist Pro, 4D biplane and 4D triplane. All of this in combination has saved us 7 to 10 minutes per scan, which is fantastic, so we really do have more time to spend with the patient,โ€ said Rebecca Perry, PhD, Cardiac Sonography Program Stream Coordinator, University of South Australia, in a Vivid Talk webinar.

Vivid Ultra Edition features leverage AI-driven, neural network-based algorithms designed to deliver repeatable and faster measurements in 2D echo imaging:

AI Auto Measure โ€“ Spectrum Recognition can semi-automatically detect the appropriate measurement of spectral Doppler images, enabling the system to fast-forward the path from scanning to measurements with 98% accuracy and 100% reproducibility.
AI Auto Measure โ€“ 2D can detect the relevant points in the image used to derive key measurements of the left ventricle, performing comparable to human users with 100% reproducibility.
AI-based View Recognition can automatically detect with 99% accuracy and 100% reproducibility which standard 2D scan plane is acquired and store this label in the image file. Our AFI package is designed to use these data to automatically select views for strain analysis, streamlining workflow and increasing efficiency.

โ€œWith the Vivid Ultra Edition, we offer AI capabilities that help address healthcare providersโ€™ two key challenges in echo exams โ€“ how time consuming the exam is and the degree of variability that exists in the quantitative results,โ€ said Dagfinn Saetre, General Manager of Cardiovascular Ultrasound at GE Healthcare. โ€œThis package supports our vision of where we need to go with cardiovascular ultrasound: tools to support less variability and improved productivity. The Vivid Ultra Edition is a solid step in our strategic roadmap.โ€

Vivid Ultra Edition also provides uncompromised image quality and advanced visualization and navigation capabilities:

HD Color displays anatomy and jet using shadowing, reflections and transparency to enhance the 3D perception.
FlexiLight offers photorealistic images to help improve visualization of moving structures and depth perception of tissues.
4D TTE Pediatric probe (6VDc) provides excellent 2D and 4D imaging for a range of pediatric patients from neonates to teenagers.

Abbott Receives FDA Emergency Use Authorization for its COVID-19 IgM Antibody Blood Test

Abbott announced that the U.S. FDA issued EUA for the company’s AdviseDx SARS-CoV-2 IgM (Immunoglobulin M) lab-based serology test for use on the ARCHITECTยฎ and Alinityโ„ข platforms. IgM antibody testing can play an important role in understanding if someone has developed antibodies in response to the virus, indicating a recent or prior infection.

The new IgM antibody test is Abbott’s latest test to support in the fight against COVID-19. Since the start of the pandemic, Abbott has received emergency use authorization for seven tests, including molecular tests, a rapid antigen test and an IgG antibody test.

“Abbott has developed tests to detect the virus at each stage of infection so doctors and their patients are equipped with knowledge of how they are responding to the virus and progressing through recovery,” said Robert B. Ford, president and chief executive officer, Abbott. “Antibody tests will continue to play an important role to better understand the virus, the prevalence of COVID-19 in an area and where a patient may be in their recovery.”

Understanding a person’s immune response with antibody tests

While molecular tests detect whether someone has the virus, antibody tests determine if someone had a previous infection by detecting antibodies, such as IgM and IgG.

Abbott first developed an IgG blood test, which often is the antibody that is longer-lasting in the body after infection. This test has been widely adopted and continues to play a key role in understanding if someone has recovered from the virus, as well as contact tracing and epidemiological studies.1

The IgM antibody, in comparison, is most useful for determining a recent infection as these antibodies become undetectable weeks to months following infection.2 Having this more complete picture of where a patient is in their recovery can help healthcare providers determine if treatment, isolation or follow-up visits are needed.

Similar to Abbott’s IgG blood test, the IgM test has demonstrated high reliability in both Abbott’s research and external virology laboratory studies. Abbott’s data demonstrated 99.56% specificity and 95.00% sensitivity for patients tested 15 days after symptom onset.

The IgM test is now available on Abbott’s ARCHITECT and Alinity platforms.
