Level 3 Communications, Inc.today announced that Courtagen Life Sciences Inc., a global life sciences company and clinically certified genetic testing lab, is using Level 3's secure, efficient network solutions to directly download and transmit massive amounts of data to generate clinically actionable results for patients.
Level 3's network supports Courtagen's proprietary platform called ZiPhyr which uses several databases and algorithm metrics to determine the pathogenicity or clinical relevance of genetic mutations in patient DNA. The system allows clinicians to generate results from a patient sample in days versus months. Courtagen uses Level 3 Ethernet Private Line service to transport data to Amazon Web Services (AWS) via AWS Direct Connect, which gives enterprises a consistent, resilient network experience through dedicated connectivity provided by Level 3 to access enterprise resources. This capability enables Courtagen to securely and more quickly download and transmit the massive amounts of data required to generate actionable patient results.
"Level 3's secure, global network is invaluable to the work we do," said Brendan McKernan, president and co-founder of Courtagen Life Sciences. "Courtagen gathers terabytes of data, compresses the data, and, in the past, had to physically ship it to our cloud provider for processing, distribution, and use by our physicians. Now, Level 3's direct connection to AWS helps us meet stringent HIPAA security requirements and delivers that data in a fraction of the typical industry turnaround time."Level 3 is an AWS Partner Network (APN) Technology Partner.

The Level 3 international fiber-optic network is uniquely equipped to help scale in response to enterprise adoption of cloud-based services. With this collaboration, Level 3 can provide businesses private, dedicated connectivity to AWS."We are pleased that Courtagen Life Services has chosen Level 3 to support their unique service needs," said Andrew Crouch, Level 3 regional president of North America. "We're delighted our comprehensive portfolio of managed and unmanaged services continues to meet healthcare customers' requirements for security, reliability and HIPAA compliance."
