Bumrungrad International Hospital is First to Achieve GHA’s COVID-19 Certification of Conformance for Medical Travel

Bumrungrad International Hospital is First to Achieve GHA's COVID-19 Certification of Conformance for Medical Travel

Bumrungrad International Hospital, one of the World’s top choices for traveling patients, located in Bangkok, Thailand, is the first hospital in the world to be awarded Global Healthcare Accreditation’s Certification of Conformance with COVID-19 Guidelines for Medical Travel Programs.

The Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) Program For Medical Travel Services issued the free Guidelines in early July of this year to assist organizations in the medical tourism and health tourism industries seeking to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 infection for both domestic and traveling patients and their companions. The guidelines are unique in that they focus on the entire care continuum, including providing guidance for travel, as well as interactions with the healthcare organization, hotel and ground transportation.

Ms. Artirat Charukitpipat, Bumrungrad’s Chief Executive Officer stated, “From the very start of the spread of the coronavirus, Bumrungrad moved quickly to implement internal, as well as national and international protocols and guidelines designed to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 infection for patients and staff. While the pandemic continues to be an ongoing challenge, I am extremely proud of the work our entire team has done and continues to do to keep patients and staff safe. Achieving GHA’s Certification of Conformance with COVID-19 Guidelines for Medical Travel Programs is a very important step for us to help increase patient trust in our medical travel services and also to validate the work we are doing to keep medical travelers safe during this difficult time.”

The Certification of Conformance (https://www.globalhealthcareaccreditation.com/certification-of-conformance-with-gha-covid-19-guidelines-for-medical-travel-programs) for hospitals and ambulatory centers is a three-year Certification with annual reviews, which signals to medical travelers, referrers, and other payers that the organization has implemented the recommendations in the guidelines as a proactive risk mitigation strategy to ensure patient safety and wellbeing during and post-COVID-19.

According to Karen Timmons, Chief Executive Officer, Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA), “The COVID-19 Certification of Conformance provides a seal to patients, buyers and other key stakeholders demonstrating that a medical travel program’s operational protocols, practices and procedures have undergone an external review and reflect international best practices designed to keep traveling patients safe. One of the key objectives of the Certification of Conformance is to enhance transparency and encourage ongoing communications with patients, which is even more important during this challenging time, and which ultimately helps to increase patient trust in the organization. We congratulate Bumrungrad International Hospital as the first hospital in the world to achieve the GHA’s Certification of Conformance and for its unwavering commitment to patient safety.”

The Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) Program For Medical Travel Services Guidelines (https://www.globalhealthcareaccreditation.com/gha-covid-19-guidelines) are free and the Certification of Conformance (https://www.globalhealthcareaccreditation.com/certification-of-conformance-with-gha-covid-19-guidelines-for-medical-travel-programs) is a process that is accomplished virtually and usually within a three to six week period of time. For more information about the Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) program and/or the COVID-19 Guidelines for Medical Travel Programs email Info@GHACCREDITATION.COM or Call U.S. +1 561 228 4014.

Cone Health to Merge with Sentara Healthcare Totaling $11B in Assets

Cone Health to Merge with Sentara Healthcare Totaling $11B in Assets

Cone Health has signed a letter of intent to merge with Norfolk, Virginia-based Sentara Healthcare. The merger will create a combined organization with a unique value-based approach that is focused on keeping people healthy and well, while providing high-quality, accessible and affordable health care in more ways and in more places. The Cone Health Board of Trustees voted unanimously to move forward with this letter of intent.

Cone Health, a not-for-profit integrated healthcare network consists of five hospitals in North Carolina. The system employs more than 13,000 people, including nearly more than 600 physicians and advanced practice providers, and operates more than 100 care sites. Its Medicare Advantage health plan, HealthTeam Advantage serves 15,000 members.

โ€œCone Health is among the highest-quality health care organizations in the nation, and we are financially strong. With the right partner, we can build on what weโ€™ve created and do even more for those we are privileged to serve,โ€ says Terry Akin, CEO, Cone Health. โ€œWe have long said that Cone Health doesnโ€™t intend to grow simply for the sake of growth. Instead, we are partnering for inspiring possibilities.โ€

Sentara Healthcare is an integrated, not-for-profit system comprised of 12 hospitals in Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina. The health system employs more than 1,200 physicians and advanced practice clinicians, 30,000 team members and operate hundreds of sites of care. Our Optima Health Plan and Virginia Premier Health Plan serve 858,000 members in Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio.

Merger Impact for Community

The resulting organization would have a combined $11B in assets, with Sentara representing about $8.7 billion in assets and Cone Health representing $2.8B in total assets, according to 2019 audited statements.

The communities served by Cone Health and Sentara do not overlap. As a result, the combined organization will ensure that consumers have more choices for healthcare and insurance plans, not fewer. The merger will deliver healthcare in more ways and more places with more options to pay for it.

โ€œThis rapidly changing healthcare environment requires tremendous transformation and innovation to ensure the long-term success of each respective health system and, most importantly, the very best for those we are privileged to serve,โ€ said Howard P. Kern, president and chief executive officer of Sentara Healthcare. โ€œWe can either react to change, or we can shape it. We are choosing to shape change and will lead this transformation of healthcare together.โ€

Next Steps

Howard P. Kern will oversee the combined organization and the corporate headquarters will remain in Norfolk, Va., and Greensboro, N.C., will serve as the regional headquarters for the Cone Health division. Terry Akin will remain in Greensboro as the president of the Cone Health division. Cone Health representatives will join the Sentara Healthcare board, with membership on all board committees and meaningful roles in all aspects of governance. Additionally, there will continue to be a Cone Health Regional Board that will be composed of community members, medical staff and Sentara representation.

The combined organization is subject to state and federal regulatory review and customary closing conditions and is anticipated to close in mid-2021. Following that, it is expected to take up to two years to fully combine and integrate.

Waystar Acquires Medicare RCM Company eSolutions at $1.3B Valuation

Waystar Acquires Medicare RCM Company eSolutions at $1.3B Valuation

Waystar, a provider of healthcare payments software, announced a definitive agreement to acquire Francisco Partners-backed eSolutions, a revenue cycle technology company with unique Medicare-specific solutions at a $1.3B valuation, according to sources close to the deal. In bringing these two industry leaders together, Waystar will be the first technology to unite both commercial and government payers onto a single payments platform. The transaction is expected to close later this year, subject to customary conditions and approvals.

eSolutions Background

Founded in 1999, eSolutionsโ€™ technology maximizes revenue collection, accelerates cash flow, and reduces administrative burden across numerous sites of care. The company has over 6,000 payer connections and maintains a powerful and growing data set of billions of transactions. In addition to hospitals and ambulatory providers, eSolutions has deep expertise in serving the post-acute market across the entire revenue cycle, including skilled nursing, senior living facilities, home care, hospice, federally qualified healthcare centers (FQHCs), and durable medical equipment providers. eSolutions is backed by Francisco Partners.

โ€œeSolutions is thrilled to be joining forces with Waystar, a company like ours that relentlessly focuses on delivering exceptional customer service,โ€ said Gerry McCarthy, Chief Executive Officer of eSolutions. โ€œThe combination of our technology platforms and data solves a major pain point in revenue cycle management to drive stronger results for our clients, partners, and for healthcare.โ€

Acquisition Creates Unified Healthcare Payments Platform

Medicare has become the largest payer in the United States and as baby boomers age, the mix of insurance coverage is increasingly shifting to Medicare. Historically, providers have had to leverage two different systems โ€“ one to handle commercial claims, and another to handle Medicare. For healthcare providers, leveraging a single, end-to-end platform to manage both private and government payments solves a major pain point and creates significant efficiencies, freeing up time to deliver care.

โ€œTogether, Waystar and eSolutions will deliver unprecedented innovation to the industry, helping healthcare organizations accelerate revenue collection while reducing administrative expenses and repetitive tasks,โ€ said Matthew Hawkins, Chief Executive Officer and board member of Waystar. โ€œUniting our companiesโ€™ data sets will further power Waystar Hubble, our artificial intelligence solution, providing access to even greater insights and value for our clients. We have long-admired eSolutions for its unique Medicare-specific revenue cycle capabilities, which are a perfect complement to the Waystar platform. We are excited to move forward as one team.โ€

6th Waystar Acquisition Since 2018

Waystar has integrated several other transformational technologies onto its single instance cloud-based platform since uniting Navicure and ZirMed in 2017. This marks Waystarโ€™s sixth acquisition in the last couple years, as the company rapidly expands within the space (not including their own $2.3B acquisition by two private equity firms last year).

Recent acquisitions include Recondo, a patient estimation and prior authorization technology, PARO, a presumptive charity scoring solution, UPMCโ€™s Ovation, a claims monitoring tool, and Connance, leveraging predictive analytics to offer agency manager, advanced propensity to pay (AP2P), and presumptive charity. Waystar is backed by EQT, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and Bain Capital.

Syapse and FDA Expand Existing Research Collaboration to Rapidly Generate Real-World Evidence Related to COVID-19 and Cancer

Syapse and FDA Expand Existing Research Collaboration to Rapidly Generate Real-World Evidence Related to COVID-19 and Cancer

Syapseยฎ, a real-world data company accelerating the delivery of precision medicine through the Syapse Learning Health NetworkTM, and the U.S. FDA Oncology Center of Excellence (OCE) have expanded an existing multi-year Research Collaboration Agreement (RCA) focused on the use of real-world data (RWD) to support clinical and regulatory decision-making.

โ€œWeโ€™re learning quickly how sophisticated analyses of real-world data can provide rapid insights into COVID-19. The FDAโ€™s Oncology Center of Excellence is working to understand COVID-19 in cancer patients using real world data, both through the COVID-19 Evidence Accelerator and a Research Collaboration Agreement with Syapse,โ€ said FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner Amy Abernethy, MD, PhD. โ€œOne of our goals is to reduce the burden of lengthy clinical trials on cancer patients and clinical researchers, and we are optimistic that the use of real-world data will help us address important questions more rapidly today, and increasingly so in the future.โ€

Based on their collaboration efforts, Syapse and the FDA have highlighted results from rapid analyses of real-world data involving cancer patients with COVID-19. Recently, the FDAโ€™s OCE and Syapse presented data at a virtual medical meeting of an analysis of more than 200,000 health records of people living with cancer across two major health systems. Data suggest that patients with cancer who also had COVID-19, compared to those who did not have COVID-19, are more likely to have other health conditions such as kidney failure, obesity and heart disease, in addition to increased rates of hospitalization and invasive mechanical ventilation, along with 16 times greater risk of death. Syapse and its Learning Health Network collaborators presented these findings at the AACR Virtual Meeting on COVID-19 and Cancer on July 22, 2020. The full presentation can be found on the Syapse website.

Thomas Brown, MD, Syapseโ€™s chief medical officer, stated, โ€œUnderstanding how a patientโ€™s medical history influences their treatment outcomes in a real-world setting is critical for clinicians, researchers and regulatory agencies to appropriately weigh the risk-benefit profile of a drug for a given patient.โ€

Through a multi-year collaboration, Syapse is partnering with FDAโ€™s Oncology Center of Excellence to:

Investigate methods to derive RWD from multiple sources including electronic health records, registries and molecular data;
Enhance understanding of how patients respond to therapies outside of clinical trials to improve care and outcomes; and
Understand the impact of COVID-19 on cancer care.

About the Syapse Learning Health Networkโ„ข

This global network of healthcare providers shares real-world data to support clinical decisions and foster collaborations among participants. Healthcare providers, including doctors and nurses, share and learn which cancer treatments produced better real-world outcomes in clinically and molecularly similar patients. Researchers learn from real-world clinical, molecular, treatment and outcomes data. These collaborations are enabled by a secure platform of shared de-identified data that is standardized and normalized across the Learning Health Network and complies with all applicable federal and state data privacy protection regulations.

About Syapse

Syapse works with leading health systems, life sciences companies, and regulators to explore opportunities to use real-world evidence to improve the outcomes of cancer patients. By bringing these organizations together into the Syapse Learning Health NetworkTM, Syapse has built one of the worldโ€™s largest networks with a goal to improve outcomes in cancer care through improved precision medicine. Syapse and its partners are working towards a future in which all cancer patients have access to the quality of care they need.

Philips launches Rapid Equipment Deployment Kit to COVID-19 response

Philips launches Rapid Equipment Deployment Kit to COVID-19 response

Royal Philips, a global leader in health technology, introduced its Rapid Equipment Deployment Kit for ICU ramp-ups, allowing doctors, nurses, technicians and hospital staff to quickly support critical care patient monitoring capabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently successfully in use in the first health systems across the US, the Rapid Equipment Deployment Kit combines Philips advanced patient monitoring technology with predictive patient centric algorithms enabling care teams to quickly scale up critical care patient monitoring capabilities within a few hours [2]. As health systems in the U.S. continue to experience surges in critical care and emergency care demand related to the COVID-19 crisis, the kit provides hospitals a way to quickly and easily expand their critical care capacity.

Innovative approach to help manage capacity surge in the ICU
The Philips Rapid Equipment Deployment Kit is a fully configured and ready-to-deploy ICU patient monitoring solution, which includes 20 ICU monitors, 20 measurement servers and one central management monitoring station. The kits are pre-built, pre-configured and pre-packed into sturdy cases that can elevate a hospitalโ€™s general care area to a critical care level in a matter of hours [3]. Kits are complete with step-by-step instructions allowing the pre-configured system to be deployed by hospital staff, with remote technical and clinical support from Philips. Kits can be transferred from hospital to hospital as needed. Once a crisis/surge passes, the kits are disinfected, packed up and stored to have available in preparation for future emergencies.

โ€œThe current health crisis has demonstrated a clear need for us to deliver innovative solutions to our customers that provide a complete critical care monitoring solution with all of the equipment they require on demand. This eliminates the need to source and configure individual pieces of high-demand equipment during a crisis,โ€ said Peter Ziese, General Manager of Monitoring Analytics at Philips. โ€œTo help ensure economical and more efficient use of hospital resources, the Rapid Equipment Deployment Kits provide the speed, flexibility and ease of implementation for advanced critical care patient monitoring that many of our customers must have during this most pressing time.โ€

Philips critical care patient monitoring solutions
In June, Philips announced it had received Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA for Philipsโ€™ IntelliVue Patient Monitors MX750/MX850 and its IntelliVue Active Displays AD75/AD85, for use in the US during the COVID-19 health emergency [4]. These patient monitoring solutions support infection-control protocols and remotely provide critical patient information when caring for hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The MX750 and MX850 monitors are the latest additions to Philipsโ€™ portfolio of integrated patient monitoring solutions to help support improved clinical and operational workflows.
