First Asia-Pacific hospital treats patients with RayStation and Radixact

Accuray Incorporated โ€“ Thailand’s Lopburi Cancer Hospital, a center of excellence for cancer treatment, is the first in the Asia-Pacific region to clinically use the combination of RaySearch’s treatment planning system RayStationยฎ with Accuray’s Radixactยฎ Treatment Delivery System.

Lopburi has a focus on innovation and has been designated a national center of excellence for cancer treatment. Today it provides specialist treatment to patients in twelve provinces around the country. The hospital selected RayStation as its treatment planning system in 2015, largely due to the system’s automated breast planning capabilities and unique multi-criteria optimization. Since its implementation, RayStation has enhanced the clinic’s workflows, reduced calculation times and ensured consistently high-quality treatment plans.

The Lopburi team, led by Dr. Kriengkri Namthaisong, hospital director and Mr. Somsak Khaunchana, head of medical physics, recently installed the Radixact System, an innovative radiation therapy device that combines integrated CT imaging with a unique helical delivery platform enabling the delivery of radiation from 360 degrees around the patient. It can target a wide range of tumors, including those in the abdomen, brain, breast, lung and head & neck. Treatment accuracy and precision are achieved through daily 3D image guidance that helps ensure proper patient positioning and accurate dose delivery to the target even when anatomical changes occur.

Sutthisak Kulpisitthicharoen, M.D., radiation oncologist at Lopburi Cancer Hospital, says: “RayStation is easy to use and enables highly accurate treatment planning. We appreciate the multi-criteria optimization functionality, which is fast and gives the planner many possibilities. Contouring is precise and convenient, and the fallback planning feature means we can transfer treatment to an alternative machine if needed, without the need to re-plan. RayStation and Radixact are highly innovative systems, and the combination is excellent, particularly for complex cases.”

Chonthon Phihuasuth, medical physicist at Lopburi Cancer Hospital, says: “Using RayStation and Radixact together improves treatment accuracy. The synergies between these innovations will reduce time both in treatment planning and treatment delivery, as well as increase efficiency. Radixact planning in RayStation enables us to achieve highly conformal dose distributions with lower doses to organs at risk, resulting in effective treatment with fewer complications for patients.”

Johan Lรถf, founder and CEO of RaySearch, says: “Lopburi Cancer Hospital is a forward-looking center with a commitment to improve care through the latest technology. We are very pleased to support their planning needs for Accuray’s advanced Radixact System. The synergies between the two systems bring great benefits for patients, as well as improving workflow efficiency for the clinic.”

Joshua H. Levine, president and CEO at Accuray, says: “The Lopburi Cancer Hospital is raising the bar for other centers providing radiation therapy treatments. The clinical team’s decision to treat cancer patients using the combination of RayStation and Radixact will expand access to state-of-the-art cancer treatment technologies for the people of Thailand. Together, RayStation and Radixact provide capabilities that align well with the hospital’s goal of delivering the most effective treatments possible.”

Wanda Group, UPMC to develop and co-manage network of international hospitals in China

Wanda Group, UPMC to develop and co-manage network of international hospitals in China

Wanda Group, one of the largest conglomerates in China, and UPMC, a leading, U.S.-based academic medical center, broke ground in Chengdu on the first of what is expected to be a network of hospitals in major cities across China. Financed by Wanda, the Chengdu hospital is expected to meet the highest international quality standards when it opens in three years.

As co-manager of the new hospital in China’s fourth-largest city, UPMC is providing its expertise in hospital design, clinical operations, technology and management to ensure a patient- and family centric experience, while creating a model that will be used to start construction on the other facilities over the next five years.

“With its global reputation for clinical excellence and more than 20 years of hands-on international operating experience, UPMC is the perfect partner to make Wanda a leader in delivering international-quality health care throughout China,” said Wang Jianlin, chairman of Wanda Group. “It’s particularly fitting that my birthplace should be the starting point for Wanda’s investment into the health and well-being of China’s citizens and for this visionary effort with UPMC.”

Added Jeffrey Romoff, chief executive officer and president of UPMC: “This partnership goes far beyond a traditional joint venture. Our first-of-its-kind network will become the largest presence of American-style academic medicine outside of the United States. Wanda-UPMC hospitals will be operated as part of our world-renowned health system, offering the most advanced and compassionate care and fueled by cutting-edge research.”

Wanda Group is one of the world’s largest diversified conglomerates, encompassing multiple ventures in real estate, film, children’s entertainment and education, professional and amateur sports, sports broadcasting, hotel management and tourism, as well as the world’s largest chain of cinemas. Wanda’s diversification into health care is guided by the national government’s “Healthy China 2030″ policy, encouraging private investment to supplement the public hospital system so that patients can get the best care close to home.

Under the agreement for Chengdu Wanda-UPMC International Hospital, expected to open in 2022, UPMC is responsible for hiring key hospital leaders, including the chief executive officer, chief nursing officer and physicians leading clinical departments. UPMC also will train staff in China and Pittsburgh — as well as in UPMC’s international locations in Ireland and Italy — while certain qualified Chengdu Wanda physicians may be considered for adjunct faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, UPMC’s academic partner.

The creation of this first hospital in Chengdu will fill a gap for state-of-the-art, patient-focused care in western China,” said Charles Bogosta, president of UPMC International and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. “Our 20-year cooperation agreement with Wanda, reached last November, will help not only local patients but also those from other parts of the country and beyond. At the same time, this new partnership will strengthen our global network of physicians, researchers and staff as we advance excellence and innovation in health care for all of the communities we serve.”

Affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, one of the top five recipients of research grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, UPMC is world-renowned in such specialties as transplantation, cancer, neurosurgery, cardiology, concussion and others for both adults and children. With more than two decades of experience building and managing health care facilities and services internationally, UPMC works with government and private partners in Italy, Ireland, Kazakhstan and China to offer patients the best possible care close to home.

Siemens Healthineers completes Corindus acquisition

Siemens Healthineers AG completed the acquisition of 100 percent of Corindus Vascular Robotics, Inc. effective October 29, 2019. Prior to the closing of the acquisition, Corindus held a shareholdersโ€™ meeting on October 25, 2019, at which 87.5 percent of their stockholders approved the acquisition. The relevant governmental authorities previously granted the approvals required to complete the acquisition.

“With the completion of the acquisition, we are opening up a new field for our Advanced Therapies business, tapping into adjacent growth markets with great potential for the future. We are taking an important step forward in the upgrading phase of our 2025 strategy,” said Bernd Montag, CEO of Siemens Healthineers AG.

โ€œThe combination of Siemens Healthineersโ€™ strong medical technology portfolio with its digital platforms and solutions, together with Corindusโ€™ precision robotics platform, has the potential to transform healthcare delivery so that, together, we can provide better care at lower cost,โ€ said Mark J. Toland, former President and Chief Executive Officer of Corindus. Mr. Toland will continue to manage the business within Siemens Healthineers.

Corindus is now part of the Advanced Therapies reporting segment. Headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, the company develops, produces and sells a robotic-assisted platform. It is currently the only FDA cleared and CE marked robotic system for endo-vascular coronary and peripheral vascular interventions. It helps physicians to precisely control guide catheters, guide wires, balloon or stent implants via integrated imaging. The physician does not have to stand directly at the angiography table as is current practice but can control the procedure with a separate controlling module and is therefore exposed to less radiation.

Robotic assisted minimally invasive procedures have the potential to reduce treatment times, increase precision during treatment, raise standardization levels in clinical procedures and ultimately improve clinical outcomes. Corindus is currently one of the leading companies offering a robotic treatment platform for major vascular therapeutic markets.

Predictive analytics could keep more aged care residents out of Emergency

Predictive analytics could keep more aged care residents out of Emergency

New software to analyse the clinical data of aged care residents for signs of deteriorating health could reduce the number of emergency hospitalisations and allow more time for enacting end of life plans.

This clinical decision support is being developed as part of Telstra Healthโ€™s residential aged care software suite over the next two years in a $1 million partnership announced this week by RMIT University, Telstra Health and the Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre.

Significantly, it will mark the introduction of clinical decision support to predict deterioration – already used in acute care settings – into aged care.

Dr Victor Pantano, CEO of the Digital Health CRC, said the project had enormous potential to keep more aged care residents out of avoidable emergency care, as well as to provide earlier indications when residents are approaching end of life.

โ€œEmergency hospitalisations are not only stressful for aged care residents and their families, but they also place significant additional demand on hospitals,โ€ Dr Pantano said.

โ€œTo be able to treat residents earlier, and avert the need for hospitalisation, is extremely important.โ€

โ€œSimilarly, the earlier we can ascertain that an aged care resident is approaching end of life, the earlier we can enact their advance care plan and honor their preferences โ€“ an important process for the aged care resident, their carers and families, and the aged care provider.โ€

Importantly for aged care providers, better prediction of care needs is expected to enable more effective staffing and clinical resource planning, which has been identified as a crucial factor by providers who use Telstra Healthโ€™s aged care software.

RMIT Professor of Computer Science, Lawrence Cavedon, said the research team will work with gerontologists and aged care staff to interpret historical data and develop new predictive analytics techniques, as well as adapting existing decision support methods from the acute care sector.

โ€œResearchers will work closely with clinicians to understand reliable signs of patient deterioration, how this might be identified from recorded data, and to manage any related ethical issues,โ€ Professor Cavedon said.

Telstra Health has offered providers using its software to participate in the research, which has been met with a positive response from several providers.

The new algorithms will first be tested using historical data and then applied to current data in a trial setting. Ultimately, they will be integrated into Telstra Healthโ€™s Clinical and Care Management software.

Larissa Briedis from Telstra Health said the community cared deeply about the effectiveness of advanced care plans.

โ€œWhile most people assume Advanced Care Directives will be enacted, the reality is that often this doesnโ€™t occur, due to a lack of knowledge that end of life is approaching,โ€ Ms Briedis said.

โ€œUse of predictive analytics will enable more aged care providers, residents and their families to enact appropriate plans for end of life, according to the wishes of that person.โ€

As part of the Digital Health CRCโ€™s Industry-PhD program, a PhD student will be embedded within the team.

โ€œThrough this innovative PhD program, weโ€™re also helping build the digital health workforce Australia will need in the future,โ€ Dr Pantano said.

The project is one of many being rolled out over the coming months through the Digital Health CRC, one of the worldโ€™s largest digital health R&D cooperatives.

Facebook launches healthcare tool for check-up reminders

Facebook launches healthcare tool for check-up reminders

Making a foray into the personal digital healthcare domain, Facebook has unveiled a โ€˜Preventive Healthโ€™ tool that connects people to health resources and sends check-up reminders.

Launched first in the United States, the tool is designed to help users of the social networking giant to find affordable places to receive care, set reminders to schedule tests and mark when tests are completed.

โ€œOur initial focus is on the top two leading causes of death in the US: heart disease and cancer, (according to CDC) as well as the flu, a seasonal illness that affects millions each year,โ€ Freddy Abnousi, Facebookโ€™s Head of Healthcare Research said in a blog post on Monday.

The resources available in the tool are provided by the American Cancer Society, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The recommendations to the users will be provided on the basis on their age and sex.

โ€œIn the US, people can search for Preventive Health in the Facebook mobile app and find out which check-ups, such as cholesterol tests or mammograms, are recommended by these health organisations based on the age and sex they provide,โ€ Abnousi said. โ€œReminders for flu shots will also appear at the appropriate time of year,โ€ he added.

Facebook said it would now show ads based on the information users provide in Preventive Health. โ€œPersonal information about your activity in Preventive Health is not shared with third parties, such as health organisations or insurance companies, so it canโ€™t be used for purposes like insurance eligibility,โ€ Abnousi said.

Facebook earlier launched a feature in India, Brazil, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the US that makes it easy to sign up as a blood donor on Facebook and get notified when nearby blood banks are in need.

โ€œSo far, more than 50 million people have signed up to donate,โ€ Abnousi said. โ€œAccording to our blood bank partners in India and Brazil, 20 per cent of voluntary, walk-in blood donors are coming from Facebook,โ€ he added.

The 5 Most Promising Medical Careers for 2020

The 5 Most Promising Medical Careers for 2020

The medical field is one that will always be necessary. People will always need medical care, whether it’s because they’ve become ill, gotten injured or are just aging. What changes are the specialties that need the newest graduates to keep them running smoothly.

With that in mind, consider the following five most promising medical careers as we move into 2020 if you’re interested in changing your career or field in the coming year.

1. Dental Hygienist
If you’re looking at medical career options, you might not typically think of including dentistry in your search. But if you overlook the possibility of becoming a dental hygienist, you’ll be doing yourself a great disservice.

This is one medical field you can tackle with as little as an associate’s degree โ€” no need to spend years in schools or accrue tens of thousands of dollars in student debt. The average dental hygienist’s program will take three years to complete, including obtaining the necessary licensing to practice in your state.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average dental hygienist makes just under $75,000 a year, or $36 an hour. This field is projected to grow much faster than average โ€” 11% โ€” between 2018 and 2028, adding more than 23,000 new positions in the next 10 years.

2. Respiratory Therapist
Respiratory therapists specialize in treatment and care for individuals who experience breathing problems, like those with COPD, asthma and similar conditions. A job in this field is usually a full-time position, and the field is expected to grow 23% between 2016 and 2026, according to the BLS.

The average respiratory therapist needs an associate’s degree, though some will work through a four-year bachelor’s degree program instead. The reported median pay for these specialists in 2018 was $60,280 a year, or $28.98 per hour.

Respiratory therapy is easily one of the fastest-growing fields in medicine, so now is the perfect time to make the switch to that specialty or start a respiratory therapy program at your local college.

3. Radiologic Technologist
While radiologic technologists might not examine diagnostic imagery to make a diagnosis, they’re a vital part of the diagnostic process, managing all the equipment necessary to take X-rays, MRIs, CT scans and more. Radiologic technicians have the benefit of being able to work anywhere that uses imaging equipment, from hospitals and outpatient facilities to research labs and even veterinary medicine.

While this field isn’t growing as fast as some of the other careers on this list โ€” only nine percent between 2018 and 2028, according to the BLS โ€” a radiologic technologist can expect to enjoy an average median salary of $56,670 and up.

Becoming a radiologic technologist requires only an associate’s degree, so if you want to change your career quickly, you’ve only got two to three years between you and your new career in radiology.

4. Occupational Therapy Assistant
Occupational therapists help people learn the skills they need for daily life and work while helping them recover from an injury, disability or illness. Becoming an occupational therapist requires a master’s degree, but working as an assistant to a therapist requires only an associate’s degree.

You need a two-year occupational therapy assistant’s program as well as 16 weeks of fieldwork to gain experience before you can work in the field.

According to the BLS, occupational therapy assistants are in one of the fastest-growing fields in the country, which is expected to grow an astonishing 31% between 2018 and 2028. Occupational therapy assistants make an average of $57,620 a year, and this degree program can be a fantastic stepping stone if you’re considering seeking a master’s degree in occupational therapy.

5. Dietitian or Nutritionist
The average person finds it challenging to know what to eat to ensure they’re getting the best nutrition. That’s where nutritionists and dietitians come in. Specialists in this field are trained to help people learn how to eat healthily to improve their lifestyle or reach a specific goal.
This career does require a bachelor’s degree as well as an internship or residency to be able to practice, but professionals in this field can expect to enjoy a median annual salary of $60,370, according to the BLS.

While this specific field isn’t growing as fast as those for occupational therapy assistants and respiratory therapists, it’s expected to grow by 11% between 2018 and 2028, which still makes its growth much faster than average.

Looking Toward 2020
The medical field is changing as we move closer to 2020. If you’re trying to choose your major or feeling burned out in your current field and want to look for a change, remember that these five careers are some of the fastest-growing in the country.

Do some research and see if one of them might be a good fit for you as you continue your career in medicine. Every field is necessary, but not all fields are created equal when it comes to career growth, so choose wisely.

ConvergeHEALTH by Deloitte Launches New Digital Health Ecosystem Platforms at HLTH Conference

ConvergeHEALTH by Deloitte Launches New Digital Health Ecosystem Platforms at HLTH Conference

ConvergeHEALTH by Deloitte announced the launch of a robust platform for the health care ecosystem that supports two critically important patient journeys.

MyPATH for Health and MyPATH for Connected Care work together to connect and support patients and their care teams across the patient experience from clinical trials to treatment and beyond.

The MyPATH platform helps health systems, biopharmaceutical, medical device, and health plan innovators deliver next-generation patient support services and therapy management across the patient journey, improving their overall experience while cultivating a rich, real-world data set.

“Because of new interoperability standards and a growing ecosystem of connected devices, patients are increasingly in control of their health and wellness data,” said Brett Davis, principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP, and general manager, ConvergeHEALTH by Deloitte. “But to transform the patient experience โ€” whether supporting virtual health or virtual clinical trials โ€” the patient must be connected to a platform that supports new workflows and paradigms of delivering care and supporting clinical research. The ConvergeHEALTH MyPATH platform helps life sciences and health care organizations do just that for the patients they serve.”

MyPATH for Health
The challenges of living with a chronic or serious illness, including complex symptoms, side-effects and treatments, can make it difficult for patients to adhere to their care plans. This can lead to increased cost for care and missed opportunities to improve patients’ lives. MyPATH for Health is a digital solution that supports life science innovators for clinical trials and patient services by connecting patients, caregivers, providers and life sciences organizations. By connecting all stakeholders, MyPATH can transform patient engagement, create a connected care team, aim to improve outcomes, and cultivates a rich, real-world data set for analysis.

“There is a growing body of evidence showing the value of digital and patient engagement solutions,” said Christopher Zant, principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP, and chief digital officer, ConvergeHEALTH by Deloitte. “The shift to a patient-centric health care environment creates significant opportunity but also requires a new way of thinking and novel strategies to be successful. With MyPATH for Health, organizations are better equipped to support and empower patients to understand their health status and be their best selves.”

MyPATH for Health enables:

Care coordination
Medication and appointment reminders
Remote health and risk monitoring
24/7 support network
Novel approaches for improving research and development
ePRO and consent management for clinical trials
Community and family support

MyPATH for Connected Care

With patients at the center of the evolving health care ecosystem, business needs to meet them where they are. Making the pivot to virtual care is essential to expanding access to care, improving clinical outcomes, increasing patient engagement and reducing costs. MyPATH for Connected Care is a digital health care platform that connects patients and care teams to deliver virtual care services through an effective, data-driven experience.

“The way a patient manages their condition on a day-to-day basis, whether at home, at work and on the go, has lasting impact on their health and the question becomes how can we leverage technology to help support their health longitudinally,” said Summer Knight, managing director, Deloitte Consulting LLP, and virtual health leader, ConvergeHEALTH. “MyPATH for Connected Care seeks to answer this question by delivering high-touch customer experiences across channels by enabling personalized treatment plans, more efficient workflows, and allows clinical teams and consumers to collaborate adjusting care plans based on real-time data generated from the patient.”

MyPATH for Connected Care enables:

A connected ecosystem to support patients and care teams at every stage and setting
Continuous strategies for building capabilities that deploy patient-centered virtual home care
A robust health data collection with a focus on care plan management
A holistic, personalized approach to care plans
The ability to empower patients, with user friendly devices and wearables
