Texas Surgical Hospital Taps Benefits of Carestream Diagnostic Imaging Technology

Texas Surgical Hospital Taps Benefits of Carestream Diagnostic Imaging Technology

Physician-owned South Texas Surgical Hospital has improved user workflow and created efficiencies across its facility with the use of Carestreamโ€™s DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System and a CARESTREAM DRX-1 System, both using DRX-Plus detectors.

โ€œWeโ€™re a surgical hospital so weโ€™re primarily here to provide service to the operating room. We do have an in-patient unit and a small emergency room,โ€ said Lisa Mason, Radiology Manager at South Texas Surgical Hospital. โ€œThe mobile DRX-Revolution has been invaluable in being able to go into the operating room during total hip replacement surgeries, where the surgeon doesnโ€™t want a C-arm in there the entire time. He just needs us to come in and take a couple of quick pictures during the procedure so he can see them in real time on the screen and then weโ€™re out.โ€

โ€œWith the DRX-Revolution, itโ€™s a quick in and out and it serves the same purpose as a C-arm. The surgeons all love it,โ€ Ms. Mason added.

The CARESTREAM DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System provides fast, convenient digital radiography imaging for patients at the bedside, in the operating room, the intensive care unit or the emergency room. The portable system eliminates blind navigation in hallways, elevators and patient rooms, offering unparalleled maneuverability in tight spaces. At South Texas Surgical Hospital, the unit is housed in the radiology department and used throughout the hospital.

โ€œWe were looking online at the portables, we were watching videos to see how they work. The thing that stuck with me is that Carestream acquired input from technologists in designing it,โ€ Ms. Mason said. โ€œWho better to say how an X-ray unit should operate than the ones who use it all day? Thatโ€™s what made me want to get in contact with Carestream and see what the system does.โ€

South Texas Surgical Hospital also used Carestreamโ€™s DRX-1 System to retrofit an existing analog X-ray room. The wireless DRX-Plus detector slides into existing X-ray equipment and can be used with imaging systems throughout a facility. South Texas Surgical uses the DRX detector in their retrofitted room where they perform chest exams.

โ€œWe purchased a larger detector, the 17 x 17, which is great for us because weโ€™re imaging chests all day,โ€ Ms. Mason explained. โ€œSo we never have to take it out and turn it around to get the horizontal and vertical orientations. We just leave it in there. It saves us time.โ€

Carestreamโ€™s DRX detectors, which lie at the core of its DRX portfolio, feature wireless connectivity to eliminate the hassles and hazards of cables and reduce the risk of infection; deliver instant access to images to speed decisions on patient care; and provide the ability to share detectors between any DRX room or any mobile DRX system. It also has a separate battery charger that allows the detector to be used while a spare battery is being charged.

Carestreamโ€™s guidance as South Texas Surgical Hospital made its purchasing decision, especially on the DRX-Revolution system, helped make the process easy. โ€œFrom the first phone call, everybody was so helpful in getting us the information we needed,โ€ Ms. Mason said.

LPIXEL Launch of Japan's first Deep Learning-Powered SaMD for Brain MRI, EIRL aneurysm

LPIXEL Inc., a leader in image analysis and processing in life science and medical research, announced the approval of โ€œEIRL aneurysm,โ€ its image analysis software that uses deep learning to identify suspected aneurysms from brain MRI. EIRL aneurysm is the first deep learning-powered software as a medical device (SaMD) for brain MRI to receive approval from the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) in Japan.

The PMDA is the agency responsible for regulating and approving pharmaceuticals and medical devices in Japan. LPIXEL successfully secured approval on September 17, 2019, and will make EIRL aneurysm commercially available in Japan.

EIRL aneurysm Overview
Product Name: Medical Image Analysis Software โ€œEIRL aneurysmโ€
Certification Number: 30100BZX00142000

Major Features
1. Image Interpretation Support
EIRL aneurysm supports the interpretation process by identifying sac-like structures of aneurysms in brain MRI that are larger than 2 mm. The sensitivity of the doctor interpreting the images without the software was 68.2%. In comparison, the sensitivity with the assistance of the software was 77.2%, suggesting an improvement in diagnostic accuracy. [1]

[1] The average interpretation results of 20 radiologists for 50 cases that included unruptured aneurysms and 150 normal cases that did not contain aneurysms.
ใƒป5 radiologists with less than 5 years of experience, and 5 radiologists with more than 5 years of experience.
ใƒป6 neurosurgeons with less than 6 years of experience and 4 with more than 6 years of experience.

2. Seamless Integration with PACS and Modalities
With its compatibility with DICOM, which is the universal format for image storage and transfer, image data can be sent and received with the pre-existing PACS and modalities installed in the hospital system. This seamless workflow allows for the analysis results to be delivered straight to the radiologistโ€™s workstation.

The Widespread of Brain Screening in Japan
With Japan leading the world with the largest number of MRI scanners in the world [2] , patients are able to take a โ€œbrain dock,โ€ or an in-depth medical examination of the brain, at a reasonable cost. Oftentimes, aneurysms are discovered during this examination. If the aneurysm ruptures, blood will bleed into the space of the brain, causing subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

[2] Based on an investigation conducted by OECD in 2017, Japan has 51.7 MRI units per million population, which is significantly higher compared to the average number of units in the G7 and OECD member countries, listed at 25.8 units and 15.2 units, respectively.

Reducing Radiologist Workload
The rapid growth of medical image data caused by the advent of imaging modalities, such as MRI, has been strongly tied to the increased workload for radiologists and neurosurgeons. There is a pressing need to promote workplace reforms in the medical space, and using technological advances to provide efficient, high quality medical care is being strongly encouraged.

Europe Immunohematology Market Size to Exceed USD 442 Mn By 2024

Europe Immunohematology Market Size to Exceed USD 442 Mn By 2024

According to the Graphical Research new growth forecast report titled โ€œEurope Immunohematology Market By Product (Analyzers, Reagents), By Technology (Biochips, Gel Cards, Microplates, PCR, Erythrocyte-magnetized Technology), By End-use (Hospitals, Diagnostic Laboratories, Blood Banks) Industry Analysis Report, Regional Outlook (Germany, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Sweden, Austria), End-use Potential, Competitive Market Share & Forecast, 2018 โ€“ 2024โ€, exceed to exceed USD 442 million by 2024.

Rising prevalence of hematology disorders in European countries will foster industry growth. A stupendous rise in prevalence of hematological disorders including sickle-cell, leukemia and thalassemia is a major contributing factor driving demand for immunohematology analyzers. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that results in an inadequate amount of hemoglobin production. The disorder results in destruction of large number of red blood cells causing anemia. Such patients need recurrent blood transfusions that proves beneficial for the industry growth.

Technological advancements in immunohematology analyzers is projected to drive the industry growth throughout the analysis period. Increasing focus of industry players on developing advanced immunohematology technologies will elevate the demand for immunohematology devices. For instance, several companies have launched a fully automated and high-throughput system for immunohematology. Advanced immunohematology systems can be used in

grouping, antibody screening, phenotyping, donor antibody screening, identification and cross-matching. Availability of such technologically advanced products will stimulate the industry growth. However, stringent regulatory scenario for immunohematology devices may hamper the business growth to some extent.Reagents segment held more than 65% revenue share in 2017 and will witness lucrative CAGR by 2024. This significant growth can be attributed to increasing number of haematological disorders that will surge the need for recurring blood testing. Additionally, diagnostic centres prefer reagents that provide results with high specificity. ย Above mentioned factors will escalate the segmental growth.

Microplates segment was valued around USD 60 million in 2017 and is projected to show similar growth during the forecast period. Significant segmental growth can be attributed to advancements in microplates. Technologically upgraded microplates provide several advantages including cost-effectiveness, reusability, easy and rapid washings for antiglobulin tests. Furthermore, microplate testing is reliable with relatively small amount of reagents as compared to tube testing and thus, its adoption will increase in the coming years.

Blood banks segment accounted for substantial revenue in 2017 and will experience 1.7% growth over the analysis timeframe. Blood banks are gaining traction and have the potential to escalate sales of immunohematology devices as number of blood transfusions is increasing annually. Growing awareness regarding blood donation and increase in the number of voluntary donors will render significant impact on the business growth.

Few major industry players include Abbott, ANTISEL S.A., Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson, Bio-Rad Laboratories, Diagast, Grifols, Hologic, Immucor, Roche Diagnostics, Siemens Healthcare and Thermo Fisher Scientific. These key industry players adopt several strategic initiatives to enhance their revenue share. Approvals for new products will also prove beneficial for the industry growth. For instance, In October 2016, Immucor announced that its U.S. FDA approval for PreciseType HEA test to screen Sickle Cell Trait. The test provides clinicians and blood banks with the complete genetic matching information they need to reduce the risk of alloimmunization. The move will help to expand companyโ€™s existing product line.
