The London Clinic hospital treats first patient with innovative treatment for advanced prostate cancer

prostate cancer

The London Clinic, a private hospital and charityon Londonโ€™s Harley Street, has treated its first patient with Lutetium-177 PSMA therapy, a molecular radiotherapy treatment that targets and kills cancer cells precisely, minimising damage to healthy cells and tissue.

Lutetium-177 PSMA is used to treat advanced prostate cancer that has spread from the prostate to other parts of the body (also known as metastatic prostate cancer). The London Clinicโ€™s specialists inject the medication into the patientโ€™s bloodstream. It seeks out tumour cells and binds to them, delivering a high dose of radiation precisely to destroy cancer cells.

Resultsfrom a small number of clinical studies for Lutetium-177 PSMA therapy show that it reduces prostate specific antigen (PSA) in up to 70% of patients(Ref 1). The treatment has recently become available privately in the UK and The London Clinic is one of the leaders in offering it to patients whose disease has progressed after chemotherapy and who have received one of the new hormonal therapies (enzalutamide / abiraterone).

Professor Val Lewington, Nuclear Medicine Specialist at The London Clinic, says: โ€œLutetium-177 PSMA is an exciting development for men with prostate cancer that our team is proud to be able to deliver at The London Clinic.

Promising early clinical data for Lutetium-177 PSMA show that it is both effective and well tolerated, so we are optimistic that this new treatment will make a real difference to our patients and their families.โ€

Professor Adil Al-Nahhas, Nuclear Medicine Specialist at The London Clinic, says: “Lutetium-177 PSMA is an exciting innovative treatment for men with advanced prostate cancer when other treatments have failed.

In the clinical studies so far, it reduces PSA in many patients, improving their quality of life and giving them more time with their loved ones. We ask clinical oncologists to contact us if they have suitable patients that may benefit from this innovative treatment.โ€

Mr Satya Bhattacharya, Medical Director of The London Clinic, says: โ€œThe London Clinic is a pioneering hospital and we are proud to be in a position to offer this innovate prostate cancer treatment to our patients in the UK and from overseas.

“Our nuclear medicine, radiotherapy and medical physics teams are committed to excellent clinicaloutcomes for our patients and we are excited to see the progress of the patients we are treating.โ€

The London Clinic Hospital offers new, Transformative Cell Therapy to Cancer Patients

CAR-T cell therapy

CAR-T cell therapy is NICE approved. Patients from across the UK, Europe and international countries are set to benefit

The London Clinic, a private hospital and charity on Londonโ€™s Harley Street, and is one of a small number of hospitals in the UK to offer adult patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma โ€“ an aggressive form of blood cancer – a new, cutting-edge form of immunotherapy called CAR-T cell therapy.

The CAR-T (chimeric antigen receptor T-cell) cell therapy works through the collection of immune cells (T cells) from the blood of patients. These T-cells are then genetically modified to destroy cancer cells in a laboratory and given back to the patient. This therapy is for patients who have no other treatment options having failed conventional chemotherapy.

A phase 2 clinical trial of 111 patients (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29226797 ), has shown positive outcomes with 52% of patients treated with CAR-T therapy, living for 18 months after treatment. Real-world data is at an early stage but consistent with this positive outcome.

CAR-T therapy is approved by the UKโ€™s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The London Clinic is HTA licensed and JACIE accredited and with access to a level 3 intensive care unit, patients who suffer any side-effects from the treatment can be cared for at one central hospital site..

Professor John Gribben, who is leading the treatment at The London Clinic, says: “CAR-T cell therapy is an exciting advancement in the treatment of blood cancers, offering a new, final treatment option for patients when others havenโ€™t had the result they need from conventional therapy.

โ€œDiffuse large B-cell lymphoma is an aggressive form of blood cancer. So far, this treatment is showing promising outcomes for many patients, letting them return to normal lives with their families and loved-ones. The London Clinic is a pioneering hospital and we are proud to be in a position to offer this treatment to our patients in the UK, Europe and from international countries,โ€ adds Professor Gribben.

Mr Satya Bhattacharya, Medical Director of The London Clinic, says: “The London Clinic is committed to bringing together itโ€™s strengths in clinical service, research, and innovation to successfully deliver new treatments such as CAR-T cell therapy and create positive outcomes for our patients.

โ€œOur team of internationally-renowned haematologists and clinical nurses have specialist experience and expertise in all aspects of treating blood cancers and we are excited to be one of a small number of hospitals offering this exciting new treatment. Our charitable ethos means that we are committed to advancing healthcare knowledge across the wider community.โ€

Althea installs two state-of-the-art 3D mammography units at Derby Hospital

3D mammography systems

Two state-of-art 3D mammography systems that offer women a more comfortable breast exam experience have been installed at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

The technology – GE Senographe Pristina Mammography System – was installed by Althea as part of the Trustโ€™s Managed Equipment Service (MES) contract.

The upgraded facilities include a tomosynthesis, biopsy and contrast enhancement โ€“ features that the hospitalโ€™s old equipment didnโ€™t have. The extra additions enable the Royal Derby team at UHDBโ€™s Royal Derby Hospital site to be at the forefront of technology and research enabling the people of Derby to get the best diagnostic care.

The Senographe Pristina mammography system was designed to ease anxiety of patients as they enter the exam room. The new, inviting mammography promotes a sense of calm and has redesigned patient comfort to ensure women are comfortable during their examination.

Having these capabilities on both pieces of equipment enables patients in Derby to have multiple elements of care in one visit, rather than having to come back for the biopsy on a separate occasion. Clinicians also benefit from these installations as they increase the Trustโ€™s scope of practice and meet requirements for continued professional development.

Lee Chlechowicz, Breast Screening and PACS Clinical Manager, added: โ€œThe new pieces of equipment are ergonomically designed and has enhanced capabilities which enables our patients to have a more comfortable and comprehensive diagnostic experience in a single visit, rather than having to come back for the biopsy on a separate occasion. Our clinicians and radiographers also benefit from these installations as they increase our scope of practice and meet requirements for continued professional development.โ€

Citizens Medical Center Adds Emergency Power To Its Emergency Room And Beyond

Citizens Medical Center

Citizens Medical Center (Citizens) entered into an agreement with Enchanted Rock, LLC (Enchanted Rock) to make sure power outages no longer impact the safety, medical care, and comfort of its patients. Enchanted Rock’s natural gas microgrids will supply redundant electrical service for Citizens, ensuring the hospital will maintain full power despite natural disasters or other utility interruptions.

When Hurricane Harvey swept through the Gulf Coast in August 2017, Citizens experienced the immediate impacts of power failure. The hospital was equipped with an emergency generator, but like most hospitals, it only had the capacity to support the equipment, life safety and critical loads required for regulatory compliance. Backing up only the required loads, but not the entire facility, can lead to patient risk and operational disruption. During Harvey, the loss of both electricity and water at Citizens was risky enough to require patients to be evacuated to a safer location.

“After our experience during Harvey, we wanted to find a way to remain open and be the safe location the community needs next time a disaster strikes,” said Citizens CEO, Mike Olson. “We now feel confident going into the 2020 hurricane season knowing that our power resiliency is in the hands of experts and were surprised to discover that this risk could be addressed so affordably with Enchanted Rock’s proven resiliency solution.”

Citizens selected Enchanted Rock, a Houston-based company that offers resiliency as a service. Enchanted Rock’s natural gas backup generators have a track record of providing continuous electrical service during severe weather events, including Hurricane Harvey, which made the company an attractive choice to Citizens. Unlike other alternatives, Enchanted Rock’s microgrids provide full facility backup. Their natural-gas powered engines can run indefinitely with unlimited fuel supply delivered through robust underground infrastructure. The hospital will now be able to remain open and serve the community even when the utility service goes down.

In addition to being the most resilient choice, Citizens also selected Enchanted Rock generators for their attractive financial terms. The company’s unique Integrated Reliability on Call (iROC) service allows Citizens to pay a small fraction of the total cost of owning a standard reliability system, making Enchanted Rock the most cost-effective choice for the hospital.

“During disasters, hospitals shouldn’t be closing to evacuate patients,” said Thomas McAndrew CEO of Enchanted Rock. “They should be open to serve the community and save lives and we are delighted to be able to help Citizens achieve this goal.”

Texas Microgrid, LLC owns, and Enchanted Rock operates the system for the life of the agreement, allowing Citizens to focus their time and energy on what matters most โ€“ providing high-quality service for their patients. Citizens anticipates this solution will be constructed and ready for operation just in time for the 2020 hurricane season.

About Enchanted Rock

Enchanted Rock has pioneered a service offering that enables commercial, industrial and institutional customers to achieve much higher levels of facility electrical reliability for a small fraction of the cost of traditional diesel backup generation ownership. They are the only distributed energy company combining expertise in energy market integration, control technologies, and construction which translates into more reliable and less expensive backup power for customers. Enchanted Rock is responsible for the design, project management, installation, and commissioning of 360 MW of distributed generation with over 60 MW under construction. THE Western Highlands Health Authority buys power stabliser to protect equipment

power stabliser

THE Western Highlands Health Authority has purchased a new power voltage stabiliser to protect its medical equipment due to the continuous power blackouts.

Chief executive officer David Vorst said the constant power blackouts caused damages to vital and expensive medical equipment and other electrical appliances at the provincial hospital.

The authority had spent a lot of money to have equipment repaired because of the power blackout.

The power voltage stabiliser was installed by a local electrical contractor and went into operation on May 13 following its commissioning.

The stabiliser was purchased at a discounted price of more than K100,000 that would help to reduce incoming power supply when it goes beyond the normal supply of 240 volts and increases the voltage when it drops so power supply was constant.

Vorst said although it was expensive, the investment would save the authority a lot of money, which cost an excess of K50,000 to repair the damages caused during blackouts.

He said the purchase and installation of such a machine was in the hospital redevelopment plan.

โ€œMy experience in the Solomonโ€™s taught me to do something like this and is in the plan for the redevelopment but we need it now to protect our equipment for patient care because continues power blackout is becoming a serious problem,โ€ he said.

โ€œAs we buy more expensive equipment, we need this to safeguard them so thank you all for a great effort.โ€

GE Healthcare and Medhold Launch CARESCAPE ONE Patient Transport Monitor

GE Healthcare

GE Healthcare and Medhold have announced the launch of CARESCAPE ONE in South Africa. The announcement was made during the Africa Health 2019 themed The future of healthcare today: Re-envisioning Africaโ€™s healthcare system.

Todayโ€™s intra-hospital patient transport has become an important part of healthcare delivery. It is a complex and highly sensitive process that requires adherence to high quality and safety standards. It is also a time-consuming task for nurses working in critical care areas, often resulting in nurses performing various tasks with higher physical and psychological requirements. The process can be stressful for both the patient and the nurse in charge of the transfer especially in emergency room, the operating room, and the intensive care unit where patients need very close surveillance and doctors need real-time information on the patientโ€™s vital signs.

CARESCAPE ONE is an advanced lightweight plug-and-play monitoring solution for conducting intra-hospital patient transport. It allows nurses to visually monitor critical patient conditions with precision during active patient transport between care areas. The solution is a portable monitor device with docking capability on the transport bed or at the bedside. It is designed to provide an efficient workflow with the added benefit of relative ease of use for new as well as experienced users. The system also provides a standardized yet fully flexible platform with one device and one software to support cost effective fleet management.

A unique feature that contributes to the ease of use and flexibility of application across the healthcare institute is the CARESCAPE parameter concept. Using CARESCAPE ONE with CARESCAPE parameters appropriate to the patient means that only one standard CARECAPE ONE device is required and the parameter set is tailored by simply connecting the required parameters. This flexibility extends to the ability to use different pulse oximetry technologies in different care areas to provide the optimum monitoring solution and patient care. As a result, healthcare facilities benefit from optimized device inventory and reduced caregiver stress caused by the correctly configured device not always being available.

โ€œOur mission at GE Healthcare is to save lives in moments that matter – CARESCAPE ONE is a good demonstration of this mission. We are proud to partner with Medhold to make a lasting impact in intra-hospital transport across South Africaโ€™s healthcare facilities,โ€ said Graham Maritz, General Manager GE Healthcare Southern Africa.

Both qualitative and quantitative results from a recent comparative usability study conducted to assess the workflow impact and evaluate productivity gains during active patient transport using the CARESCAPE ONE as compared with a patient transport monitor of similar class showed that CARESCAPE ONE can help improve patient transport safety and staff efficiency. Specifically, the study found that participants using the CARECAPE ONE monitor experienced overall 26% less patient transport time, and 60% fewer user errors in performing routine transport tasks.

6 Ways Custom EHR Software Improves Healthcare Quality

EHR Software

Electronic health record software is a digitized version of paper records and it has transformed the way healthcare organizations record, store, share and retrieve patient records.Implementing EHR solution helps streamline processes and increases work efficiency, ultimately enhancing the quality of patient care.

Electronic health record software is a digitized version of paper records and it has transformed the way healthcare organizations record, store, share and retrieve patient records.Implementing EHR solution helps streamline processes and increases work efficiency, ultimately enhancing the quality of patient care.

However, EHR software is available as both customized systems and cookie-cutter solutions. So purchasing the right product becomes a challenging task as every healthcare organization has a unique workflow depending on its size, scope and aim. Weighing the pros and cons of off-the-shelf EHR systems against custom EHR software will help you arrive at the right decision.

Meanwhile, letโ€™s take a look at the 6 areas that have been revolutionized completely with the advent of cloud-based EHR:

1. Improved Care Coordination
Care coordination is especially important for handling medical emergencies and managing patients who are in critical condition. With cloud-based EHR, healthcare providers are less likely to make errors as they are aware of the whole picture in real-time. With no more waiting for medical records, they can also be more responsive to patient needs and do the needful quickly.

2. Accurate Diagnosis
Using EHR software, healthcare organizations and nonprofits assisting persons with disabilities can instantly access patient records including their past diagnoses, surgeries, prescriptions, procedures and lab results. When the complete medical history of a patient is at their fingertips, no information is overlooked and there is no delay in making a diagnosis and developing a personalized care plan.

3. Superior Research Quality
EHR software enables healthcare research facilities anddoctors to leverage analytic capabilities and generate accurate outcomes according to disease progression, prognosis, drug trials, active clinical conditions and other applicable parameters. These reports empower healthcare professionals to constantly monitor and accurately assess treatment plans and the progression of the disease.

EHR Software also ensures better decisions by facilitating safe and compliant information sharing between peers, healthcare practices, and research facilities. With access to actionable information, both patient care and healthcare quality are improved considerably.

4. Positive Patient Experience
Custom EHR Software is integrated with scheduling systems and patient portal. As all the information remains synchronized on the electronic health record software, it eliminates paperwork for the administrative staff and patients have easy access to their clinical records. Using the portal, patients donโ€™t need to fill several forms at every appointment and the administrative team is not required to re-enter all the patient information into the system. This accelerates the communication process between patients and healthcare professionals and improves the patient experience. Click here to know more.

5. Organized Clinical Process
Healthcare quality includes prompt management of medical emergencies and EHR software enables healthcare organizations and non-profits to simplify and speed-up their clinical processes. Electronic health record software enables the healthcare staff to manage and monitor the treatment flow of every patient at every touch point.

This level of visibility allows healthcare organizations and non-profits to identify inconsistencies and improvise practices so waiting time is reduced and test results are reported on time. When both healthcare professionals and patients are actively involved in the health journey, the quality of care and clinical outcomes improve significantly.

6. Reduced Cost
Depending on the patientโ€™s medical condition and diagnosis, the patient may need to work with different healthcare providers simultaneously. It is possible that two providers request for the same tests to be conducted multiple times. This is not only inconvenient for the patient but also expensive because multiple bills are incurred for the same treatment. But with electronic health record software, all service providers can access complete patient data on one platform which reduces the cost of treatment considerably.

Custom EHR software that is exclusively tailored to the unique needs of an organization can revolutionize the continuity of care with easy implementation of best healthcare practices. This eventually results in fewer medical errors, enhanced patient safety and fully compliant healthcare records. Adopting customized electronic health record software is inevitable for healthcare organizations that want to improve their processes and provide a superior experience to their patients.
