Transasia & AMTZ launch India’s first mobile lab for COVID-19 testing

Transasia & AMTZ launch India's first mobile lab for COVID-19 testing

Transasia Bio-Medicals Ltd. has partnered with Andhra Pradesh Medical Technology Zone (AMTZ) to launch a mobile COVID-19 test lab to help faster and safer testing across India. Named Infectious Disease Diagnostic Lab (iLAB), this state-of-the-art mobile microbial containment (BSL-2) laboratory was made in Transasiaโ€™s Vizag manufacturing facility at AMTZ, Asiaโ€™s first medical device manufacturing park at Vishakhapatnam in partnership with Bharat Benz and support of Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Government of India. Transasia Bio-Medicals Ltd. is instrumental in placing Erba IVD analyzers and reagent kits in iLAB along with conducting COVID-19 testing as well as maintaining the mobile laboratory, as it travels across villages and towns in India.

Conceived and developed at lightning speed and manufactured and assembled in 8 days at Transasiaโ€™s Vizag manufacturing facility
Named iLAB, it was officially flagged off by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, WHO Executive Board Chairman and Minister of Health and Family Welfare, GoI, in New Delhi.

Fully equipped to do COVID-19 testing, this mobile lab will cater to the Indian heartland; and is being deployed in slums and villages to improve access, besides hotspots and containment zones.

This mobile lab will strengthen GoIโ€™s testing strategy and include testing of healthcare and essential service workers across India
Serology tests aid in better understanding of how much of the population has been infected and tracking the spread of disease over time and geographies.

Embodies the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat and โ€˜Make in Indiaโ€™

Dr. Jitendar Sharma, CEO of AMTZ and his entire team have been deeply instrumental in conceiving, designing and setting up the iLAB.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, WHO Executive Board Chairman and Minister of Health and Family Welfare, GoI flagged off the mobile lab at New Delhi in the presence of Dr. Alka Sharma, Advisor, and Dr. Renu Swarup, Secretary, DBT, Ministry of Science and Technology, GoI. The unique mobile lab vehicle is capable of diagnosing all infectious diseases. โ€œTo ensure testing facilities in far-flung areas, such innovations have been developed to cater to the interior and inaccessible parts of the country,โ€ conveyed Dr. Harsh Vardhan during the launch.

โ€œAs a healthcare contributor to the nation, we have been quite eager to participate in the Governmentโ€™s agenda in protecting and saving the people from this pandemic. Considering the urgency, we have been working aggressively even during lock down in getting the iLAB geared up for COVID-19 testing. With this innovative iLAB, we are now ready to commence testing immediately,โ€ said Suresh Vazirani, CMD, Transasia-Erba Group.

โ€œThis initiative embodies our vision of creating a healthier and happier world,โ€ added Vazirani.

Transasia will be using ICMR and NIV approved ErbaLisa COVID-19 IgG ELISA kits for testing which comprises both screening and confirmatory tests. This serology test helps identify and isolate infected individuals. It also aids in better understanding how much of the population has been infected and tracking the spread of disease over time. Besides this, a range of immunology analyzers to test these samples and a biochemistry analyzer for evaluating important parameters that should be monitored during infections like COVID-19, such as analytes, electrolytes, proteins, substrates, immunoturbimetric assays and special chemistries have been installed.

โ€œWe are glad and proud to be the technology partner of choice for AMTZ and Department of Biotechnology, GoI and to extend our technical and clinical expertise in developing this innovative โ€˜lab on wheelsโ€™ in the nationโ€™s mission to fight against COVID-19. This collaboration with GoI builds on Transasiaโ€™s 41-years-old legacy of providing high quality products at affordable cost across the heartland of India,โ€ said Ravi Kaushik, CEO, Transasia Bio-Medicals Ltd.

โ€œWe take pride in driving this idea from concept to reality, working closely with AMTZ. The iLAB will allow for COVID-19 testing access to thousands of patients in remote areas who would otherwise find it difficult to reach a lab and get a test done. It goes beyond free testing by providing diagnosis at the doorstep of needy patients,โ€ Ravi Kaushik added.

A dedicated team of lab technologists, application and service engineers will handle the COVID-19 samples and testing process with additional layers of safety and priority in the mobile van. The mobile lab has the capacity to conduct 200 RT-PCR tests and 400 ELISA tests in a day. The lab will function like a typical pathology lab with sample collection, diagnostics, and reporting on the same day. The entire process of collection, testing and issuing of reports will be governed by the guidelines issued by ICMR, GoI and the State Health Department.

On a Bharat Benz chassis, the mobile lab has BSL-2 cabinet, cleanroom, latest medical equipment for diagnosis of COVID and other infectious diseases, air conditioning, AHU, supply of reagents and consumables, personal protective equipment needed for the technicians, furniture, internet security, camer and GPS locator.

iLAB consists of PCR workstation, real-time PCR machine, incubator, deep freezer and refrigerator for testing samples and storing reagents with provision for treatment of liquid effluents, safe storage of solid bio-hazard wastes and decontamination by autoclaving. The lab has a provision for storing and donning PPEs; storage of used aprons; and emergency body shower and eye wash.

The lab is capable of traveling at a speed of 50 to 100 kmph and can travel large distances for sample collection, analysis, and giving results. The iLAB container can also be lifted from the automotive chassis and can be put on the goods train and can be sent anywhere in the country, with the help of railways.

RSIP Vision introduces an innovative set of AI modules for enhanced medical ultrasound applications

RSIP Vision introduces an innovative set of AI modules for enhanced medical ultrasound applications

RSIP Vision, a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision technology, announced a new set of AI-based medical ultrasound modules. These advanced modules will serve as AI-based building blocks for a variety of applications, ranging from automated diagnosis, measurement, and volume estimation, to advanced procedure planning and in-op guided tracking.

When integrated into third-party ultrasound carts, PACS systems, and proprietary cloud platforms, these modules will enable a new set of innovative capabilities in a wide range of domains, such as urology, OBGYN, general imaging, cardiac procedures, and more.

These new building blocks will enable new applications, including:

Biopsy guidance โ€“ The modules allow for real-time, AI-guided needle biopsy procedures, while providing an improved understanding of the lesion or mass. They utilize automated tissue segmentation capabilities, clearly separate the abnormal tissue from the healthy one, and provide the surgeon with all the necessary data required to get to the desired area quickly and precisely.

Automated measurements and function evaluation in Cardiac Ultrasound โ€“ These AI modules perform fully automated segmentation of the heart chambers from different ultrasound views, which automates the most important measurements, such as Ejection Fraction, CO, EDA, and EDA. It also evaluates the performance of main heart functions, such as motion of the valves and walls, and detects and classifies abnormalities.

3D Reconstruction โ€“ In many cases, the sonographer will be able to demonstrate only a few slices of the organ at focus. The reconstruction function can build the complete organ from sparse information and help the interventional surgeon navigate accurately for biopsy or ablation procedures.

Patient Screening โ€“ Integrated into cloud-based settings, these AI capabilities can perform automated analysis of ongoing ultrasound studies, provide triage and second-opinion analysis, detect irregularities and potential errors, prioritize workflow, and boost population healthcare management capabilities.

โ€œUltrasound is extremely user dependent and can be challenging to interpret. These innovative AI modules help medical teams make quick and accurate clinical decisions and lower the dependence on teamsโ€™ experience,โ€ says Dr. Rabeeh Fares, Radiologist; Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Sourasky Medical Center, Tel Aviv, Israel.

The usage of ultrasound imaging plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of many pathologies. Its wide availability and relatively low cost, with no radiation considerations, makes it the preferred imaging modality across a number of clinical fields. It can immediately detect pathologies and injuries across the entire healthcare pathway and is useful in a variety of settings, from ER triage and intensive care units, to point-of-care settings and outpatient clinics.

CHC Launches Free Financial Dashboard To Monitor COVID-19 Funding And Costs

CHC Launches Free Financial Dashboard To Monitor COVID-19 Funding And Costs

Community Hospital Corporation has launched a free downloadable financial dashboard for tracking and monitoring of COVID-related funding and costs.

The complimentary COVID-19 Financial Dashboard https://communityhospitalcorp.com/covid-19-financial-dashboard-landing/ , which CHC developed for its network of community hospitals, is an Excel file designed to help all community hospitals to manage cash flow and ensure that all COVID-related government funding opportunities are properly vetted and tracked in one place.

Plano, Texas-based CHC developed the dashboard for those rural hospitals that received funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a Paycheck Protection Payment loan and other forms of federal assistance to stabilize them during the crisis.

This created another layer of data for the hospitals to monitor, ensuring these outlays are tightly controlled, responsibly managed, and restricted in use to preserve cash flow.ย And in some cases, the federal government requires hospitals to document the use of funds. For example, hospitals must provide attestation (quarterly beginning in July) for CARES Act payments used for COVID-related costs and loss of revenue.

CHC President and CEO Jim Kendrick commented: โ€œAs part of our mission to serve community hospitals, we decided to make this tool available to all who need at no cost. Our goal is to be a resource for community hospital leaders during this global health crisis.

Do I need to hire a personal injury attorney?

Do I need to hire a personal injury attorney?

Have you been injured in an accident? Do you need medical attention? Was another person at fault? If you answered โ€œyesโ€ to these three questions, then you probably should hire a personal injury lawyer to help you seek damages. Personal injury lawyers work on a contingency basis, so there are no out-of-pocket costs. They claim their fees at the end of your case and they earn them. Read further to find out how hiring a personal injury attorney benefits you.

Damages that Youโ€™re Entitled To

If youโ€™re injured in an accident that was someone elseโ€™s fault, youโ€™re probably entitled to damages. Here are some of the damages that youโ€™re owed:

  • Medical Expenses – These include anything thatโ€™s involved in your recovery: hospital bills, surgeries, physical therapy, medication, scans, tests, follow-up appointments, et cetera.
  • Lost Wages – If you arenโ€™t able to work, have to reduce your hours, or are forced to use sick time, you should receive compensation for those losses.
  • Pain and Suffering – Obviously, getting into an accident and being paid for your expenses is not nearly as good as not getting into the accident in the first place. Pain and suffering is a term of art for non-economic damages, like inconvenience, emotional trauma, and physical pain.

Why You Shouldnโ€™t Accept an Initial Offer from an Insurer

Within 24 hours of making a claim for an accident injury, you can expect a settlement offer from the insurance company. They will assure you that youโ€™ll get the money quickly and that it should cover your damages. Only, theyโ€™ll also want you to sign a waiver of liability, which will prevent you from getting any more money if you need it. This offer may seem tempting, but you should pass until you speak with a lawyer. Most initial settlement offers grossly underestimate your actual losses. Even after a personal injury lawyers contingency fees โ€” which come out at the end โ€”, you will usually do far better with a lawyer than without.

Attorney Contingency Fees in Florida

One of the factors that often prevent individuals from speaking with an accident attorney is the cost. As was mentioned before, there are no out-of-pocket costs. In Florida, the fees are capped by the state bar association. The fee your lawyer collects depends largely on which phase of the case it settles or whether or not it needs to be litigated and the amount of the settlement or jury award. Fees can range from 15 percent to 40 percent. You should speak with an attorney about their contingency fees before committing.

Hire an Attorney Sooner Rather Than Later

For most personal injury cases in Florida, the statute of limitations is four years from the date of the accident. While thatโ€™s a considerable amount of time, itโ€™s still important that you initiate your case sooner. Evidence can be lost, witnesses become more difficult to find, and bills begin to pile up. Attorneys offer a free initial consultation and until you sign a commitment agreement, youโ€™re not under any obligation to use them.

In Florida, 1800injured.care car accident lawyer connects accident victims with attorneys and medical professionals. Use this reliable referral service to talk with a personal injury attorney for your accident.

The 5 Areas of Workers Compensation Benefits

The 5 Areas of Workers Compensation Benefits

Workersโ€™ compensation gives financial support to employees while also financially protecting businesses in cases of work-related injury or illness. Regulations regarding workersโ€™ compensation benefits vary by state and industry, but generally speaking, all U.S. companies have to have workers’ comp insurance coverage. As a business owner, it’s your responsibility to purchase a plan and inform your workers of their available benefits.

Should a workplace injury occur, the injured employee can file a workers’ comp claim to the company’s insurance provider. The insurer will then assess the claim and offer a compensation package to cover the related expenses.

Whenever you switch insurance providers, update your policy, or hire new employees, you should review the benefits included in the plan and clearly relay this information. Whenever an employee comes to you with questions about workplace safety or what would happen should an accident occur, you want to have answers ready. To help yourself and your staff better understand the ins and outs of workers’ comp insurance, you may want to think of your workers’ comp policy as five different categories of compensation:

  1. Immediate/Short-term Medical Treatment

Workersโ€™ compensation benefits will help your employee pay for medical expenses in work-related illnesses or injuries. Medical costs may include emergency room and doctor visits, surgeries, physical therapy, and associated prescriptions. At least some of these benefits will start immediately. Then, weekly benefits are paid out to employees whose illness or injury prevents them from permanently or temporarily returning to work.

These benefits donโ€™t have deductibles, dollar limits, or copays. Instead, benefits continue until the patient recovers from the injury. However, some states do place restrictions on certain types of treatments, such as alternative care options.

  1. Ongoing Care

Some workersโ€™ compensation claims deal with severe illnesses and injuries that require consistent, ongoing treatment. Common instances where injury or illness developed over longer periods include back problems or carpal tunnel syndrome. This ongoing care is covered through workersโ€™ compensation insurance.

  1. Compensation for Lost Wages

Lost wages are a major concern for employees unable to work due to workplace injuries. Workersโ€™ compensation helps to replace the income your employees miss out on during their recovery period. Wage replacement is typically about two-thirds of the worker’s average salary wage, but most states have a maximum payout amount.

  1. Disability Benefits

Disability benefits vary from state to state, but in general, they protect employees who become permanently or temporarily disabled due to a work injury or illness. The amount an employee receives will vary based on the nature of the illness or injury, the extent to which it inhibits their ability to work, and how it changes their daily life.

Disability compensation cases are classified into four categories:

  • Temporary Totalโ€“ In which the worker is completely unable to work, but for a temporary amount of time
  • Temporary Partialโ€“ Indicates the worker was partially disabled by a short-term injury. These employees may be able to work part-time or in a limited capacity until healed
  • Permanent Totalโ€“ Applies to individuals that have sustained a permanent, incurable injury. As a result, they cannot earn future income in the same field of work
  • Permanent Partialโ€“ Categorizes individuals having sustained a permanent injury that prevents them from earning their standard income before their injury or illness
  1. Funeral Costs

In the event of a workplace fatality, workersโ€™ compensation coverage will help pay for some or all of the funeral costs. It can also provide death benefits for the deceased employeeโ€™s beneficiaries.

What Happens if an Employee Rejects the Compensation Package?

Workersโ€™ compensation insurance is a way for employers to avoid out-of-pocket expenses should an employee suffer a work-related injury or illness. Workersโ€™ compensation was originally designed as a protection for businesses. When employees were injured, they would often take legal action against their employer, monopolizing time, and putting a great financial strain on the business.

However, employees have the right to reject the compensation package presented and try to negotiate a settlement with their employer. This process is an alternative in which your employee can seek a monetary settlement.

The workers comp settlement process varies by state and how the employee chooses to proceed. The employee and their attorney will calculate their desired settlement payout and then contact the insurance company.

As an employer, it’s essential that you try to make the settlement process as smooth as possible. For example, you can:

  • Provide all the necessary paperwork and contact information
  • Keep the employee up to date on company injury policies
  • Reach out to your insurance carrier with any concerns or questions

The workersโ€™ compensation settlement may be a lump sum or take the form of a structured payment plan. If associated parties cannot or will not negotiate and reach an agreement, the employee and attorney may decide to pursue a workersโ€™ comp hearing or lawsuit.

At a workerโ€™s comp hearing or trial, a judge evaluates the case to determine a fair settlement. Once the judge makes their decision, the insurance company will pay the claim, and the settlement is complete.

Workersโ€™ Compensation Benefits Everyone

All employers should strive to create a safe and productive environment for their employees. While maintaining this atmosphere is important, the only way you can protect yourself and your employees from high medical costs and injury-related losses in production is to find the right workersโ€™ compensation coverage for your business.

Walmart Buys CareZone’s Digital Prescription Technology In Latest Healthcare Deal

Walmart Buys CareZone's Digital Prescription Technology In Latest Healthcare Deal

Walmart has purchased CareZoneโ€™s prescription management technology and related patents as the retailer and rival pharmacies take more steps into the digitization of healthcare and medicines.

Walmart, which operates hundreds of pharmacies, is competing with CVS Health, which owns the drug benefit manager Caremark, and Walgreens Boots Alliance, which is investing billions of dollars into partnerships and new technology systems. Meanwhile, online retail rival Amazon is stepping up its effort into prescription management and drug delivery following its purchase of the online pharmacy PillPack two years ago.

โ€œCareZone has developed a mobile app that helps individuals and families manage medicine and chronic illness for each member of the household,โ€ Walmart said in a blog post Monday afternoon from Sean Slovenski, Walmartโ€™s senior vice president of U.S. Health & Wellness and Lori Flees, senior vice president for for Samโ€™s Health & Wellness. โ€œFamilies can use the app to scan labels or insurance cards to speed and simplify the process.โ€

Financial terms of the transaction werenโ€™t disclosed but Walmart said certain CareZone employees would be joining the retailerโ€™s workforce including โ€œthe members of CareZoneโ€™s product and technology team that built their app, and who will help us innovate and integrate faster with Walmartโ€™s existing systems.โ€

Walmart said it has acquired โ€œspecific assetsโ€ that include CareZoneโ€™s technology platform, patents and key intellectual property, which help patients better organize their prescription information.

โ€œThe goal of any technology startup is to build a product or experience that touches the lives of as many people as possible,โ€ CareZoneโ€™s co-founder and chief technology officer Walter Smith said. โ€œAdding our technology platform to Walmartโ€™s existing digital capabilities and physical reach creates a unique opportunity to redefine what the future of digital health and wellness can look like. The CareZone team members joining Walmart are excited to bring our knowledge and apply it to such a broad canvas.โ€

Walmart has a long and noted history in the pharmacy business, including sales of Medicare part D drug plans for seniors with the health insurer Humana as well as a landmark program for the uninsured launched in 2006 to sell $4 prescriptions.

โ€œThe technology and team members joining Walmart will augment our current Health & Wellness capabilities and support our focus on digital health care solutions,โ€ Slovenski and Flees wrote. โ€œCareZone will remain a separate company unrelated to Walmart.โ€

Walmart is developing an array of new healthcare services, including ways to measure physicians in communities. Walmart is also beginning to open new healthcare services โ€œSuper Centersโ€ that feature an array of primary medical services, dental care, and behavioral health services as part of a new model expected to eventually be replicated in other markets.

The first such โ€œWalmart Healthโ€ brand center opened last year in Dallas, Georgia, as a health facility offering more services than the 19 โ€œCare Clinicsโ€ Walmart has already operated elsewhere in Georgia, South Carolina and Texas.

Allianz enhances its digital healthcare offering with Olive

Allianz Care has announced the launch of Olive, a brand new approach to health, wellbeing and preventive care for corporate groups, inter-governmental organisations (IGOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The launch follows a successful pilot programme, which was rolled out to 27,000 employees of IGO clients around the world. Allianz Care, the international health brand of Allianz Partners, specialises in providing international health and life insurance and associated health and protection services. Olive is the latest offering in Allianz Careโ€™s suite of health and protection services.

The Olive programme was piloted last year in three IGO clients with staff stationed across four continents. IGOs are often required to send staff to high risk areas around the world, which can result in significantly varied needs and challenges regarding the mental and physical health of individual workers.

The Olive pilot provided the participating IGOs with access to on-site health screenings managed by Allianz Care physicians and nurses in three locations: Rome, Nairobi and Panama, where screening results were compared against the norm for each region and recommendations could be given.

The IGOโ€™s staff also had access to a range of digital services which meant they could make use of the programme no matter where in the world they were posted. Participants were invited to take part in any way they chose and could opt-in to use the platform and register for screenings.

Biocomposites announces STIMULAN products added to NHS Supply Chain

Biocomposites, an international medical devices company that engineers, manufactures and markets world leading products for use in infection management in bone and soft tissue, announced that its STIMULANยฎ and genexยฎ products have been added to the NHS Supply Chainโ€™s Total Orthopaedic Solutions 2 framework agreement. NHS Supply Chain manages the sourcing, delivery and supply of healthcare products and services for NHS trusts and healthcare organisations across England and Wales and TOS2 provides a single source for NHS Trusts to purchase orthopaedic products.

STIMULAN recently gained a new European CE mark approval for mixing with antibiotics: vancomycin, gentamicin and tobramycin. It is the only calcium matrix approved for use in bone and soft tissue and targets high concentrations of antibiotic at the point of infection at levels unachievable systemically โ€“ which lowers rates of reinfection, saves hospital costs and improves patient outcomes. STIMULAN is the only product of its type available through the TOS2 agreement.

The NHS Supply Chain was designed to help the NHS deliver clinically assured, quality products at the best value. The TOS2 agreement provides competitive national pricing and builds on TOS1 which secured over 50% of all spend in scope across the English NHS, with the aim of rising to over 90% with TOS2.

The NHS adoption of STIMULAN builds on the productโ€™s commendable traction worldwide and it is the option of choice for influential surgeons managing infection, offering them the flexibility to use their chosen antibiotics at patient-specific concentration levels in both bone and soft tissue.

Michael Harris, Chief Executive Officer of Biocomposites, said: โ€œSTIMULAN is already used in over 50,000 cases every year in thousands of hospitals around the world. As the only calcium sulfate antibiotic carrier approved for use in bone and soft tissue, our addition to TOS2 makes it even easier for hospitals and surgeons to access this breakthrough solution as part of their infection management strategy.โ€

Big Health will use the funds to invest in new product development, expand its distribution channels, and scale its commercialization activities.

โ€œWeโ€™re excited about the mission of Big Health to provide fully automated mental health solutions to millions of people worldwide,โ€ said Janke Dittmer of Gilde Healthcare. โ€œOur investment philosophy is to support fast-growing, global businesses that deliver better care at lower cost and Big Health is a perfect fit.โ€

โ€œWe’re very pleased to add Big Health, the leading digital therapeutics company in mental health, to our therapeutics portfolio,โ€ said Isaac Cheng, M.D., of Morningside Ventures. โ€œBig Health has led the market in their commitment to clinical evidence, and in pioneering innovative go-to-market strategies. We believe the company is ideally positioned to dominate the digital therapeutics space, and to help millions back to good mental health as a result.โ€

This news marks another in a series of important milestones for Big Health:

In June 2019, Big Health announced a partnership with CVS Health, to streamline customer adoption of its digital therapeutics; the first step was to add Big Healthโ€™s Sleepioโ„ข โ€” for poor sleep โ€” to the CVS pharmacy benefit management formulary, which simplifies employer sign-up and reimbursement.

In early April of this year, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company announced its Community Access Program, which enabled companies and their employees to sign up for free access to Sleepio and Daylight. To date, the UKโ€™s National Health Service (NHS), Boston Medical Center, AmeriGas and more than fifty other companies have signed up for this program, adding more than six million covered employee lives in a matter of weeks.

Big Health also recently announced key findings from a health economic evaluation of Sleepio at a Fortune 500 company, which compared two groups of employees โ€” a group of Sleepio users and a matched control group โ€” and their respective healthcare costs over an 18-month follow-up period. The results demonstrated 28% lower total annualized healthcare costs in the cohort of Sleepio users, as compared to the matched control group.

โ€œWe entered 2020 having doubled our revenues in 2019,โ€ said Peter Hames, Big Health co-founder and chief executive officer. โ€œThatโ€™s because customers such as Target, Comcast and The Home Depot recognize that our digital therapeutics can fill a growing gap in their portfolio of mental health benefits. With this funding and with Jankeโ€™s and Isaacโ€™s strategic insights, we are well positioned to accelerate our new product innovation, and add more sales and distribution capacity to meet increasing demand.โ€

Medtronic and Foxconn Partner to Increase Ventilator Production

Medtronic and Foxconn Partner to Increase Ventilator Production

Medtronic plc and Foxconn Industrial Internet, a business group within Foxconn Technology Group, announced that Foxconn has successfully completed Medtronicโ€™s regulatory and quality requirements necessary to begin manufacturing Medtronic Puritan Bennettโ„ข 560 (PB560) ventilators for Medtronic in the United States. Medtronic and Foxconn are currently ramping up plans to produce 10,000 PB560 ventilators over the next year at Foxconnโ€™s Wisconn Valley Science and Technology Park in Mount Pleasant, Wis. The ventilators will be marketed and sold by Medtronic.

โ€œNo single company can meet the current demands for ventilators that are critical in the fight against COVID-19. Joining together with Foxconn immediately increases our production capacity to meet the increased demand and creates a flexible manufacturing model for us,โ€ said Vafa Jamali, senior vice president and president of the Respiratory, Gastrointestinal and Informatics business, which is part of the Minimally Invasive Therapies Group at Medtronic. โ€œTogether, we can increase ventilator supply and help more patients and clinicians than any one company can do alone.โ€

โ€œFoxconn is grateful to all front-line professionals who tirelessly work to serve others and is proud to partner with Medtronic to address this global pandemic. Foxconnโ€™s manufacturing capabilities can bring to market life-saving medical equipment during these challenging times,โ€ said Foo-Ming Fu, CEO of Foxconn Industrial Internet Wisconsin. โ€œFoxconnโ€™s flexibility to quickly react to global markets makes opportunities with partners like this possible. In the last two months, we went from zero ventilator manufacturing capabilities to a tested, qualified ventilator manufacturing cell.โ€

The two companies connected after Medtronic publicly shared the design specifications for the PB560 through the Medtronic ventilator open source initiative, which launched earlier this year. This effort allows global participants to evaluate options for rapid ventilator manufacturing at scale to help doctors treat patients fighting COVID-19. To date, there have been more than 200,000 registrations for the design specifications at Medtronic.com/openventilator.

To respond to global demand, if needed, Medtronic and Foxconn can increase their production capability to more than double the current Foxconn ventilator commitment.

Introduced in 2010, the PB560 is sold in more than 35 countries around the world. It is a compact, lightweight, and portable ventilator that provides airway support for both adults and children. It can be used in clinical settings and at home and provides mobile respiratory support.

Ventilators play a critical role in the management of patients with severe respiratory illness, such as COVID-19, who require assistance because they cannot breathe effectively. Without ventilation support, some patients with severe respiratory disease might not survive. By placing a patient on a ventilator, the patientโ€™s lungs are permitted to rest and recover while the ventilator performs the functions of supplying oxygen and simulating the actions of breathing.
