3 Things to Keep in Mind as You Recover from Car Crash Injuries

3 Things to Keep in Mind as You Recover from Car Crash Injuries

No matter how careful we are, roads and highways are still very risky places to be. They are full of vehicles and commuters; each have their own agenda and sensibilities. Yes, there are traffic rules, but there are also those who are willing to break them to get to their destination sooner and mistakes happen all the time.

Sometimes, this desire to get ahead results in very unfortunate crashes where other drivers or even pedestrians are injured. Those who suffer from injuries must initially not think of anything else other than their own recovery and safety.

In this article, we outline the three things that every car crash victim must bear in mind as they recover from their injuries.

Get all the treatments that you need only from a licensed medical professional

Many states have at-fault policies where those who caused or have the greater responsibility over the crash are made to pay the recovery expenses of those who are injured. However, getting the money might involve a detail-oriented battle with insurers. For this, you will surely need the help of a competent personal injury lawyer such as those from seattlemalpracticelawyers.com.

To make the process a lot easier for you, it is advised that you get treatment only from a licensed medical professional. If you can, refuse to be moved from the crash site until medical help arrives. Donโ€™t worry, this is standard protocol, as you may have unseen injuries that are aggravated by abrupt or misguided movements.

Get all the tests that you can get your hands on

Depending on its severity, a crash can injure you in more ways than you are aware of. Besides telling your attending physician everything that you feel, itโ€™s important that you subject yourself to a general checkup in order to uncover unnoticed physical irregularities. Only after a thorough examination is done should you start believing any declaration that you are fine. Remember, some injuries become a lot more serious simply because they werenโ€™t detected early on.

Aside from taking care of your physical health, you should pay attention to your mental health as well. An accident or car crash is a traumatic experience that can give you anxiety. Seek the help of a mental health professional and heed their advice as to what treatment or therapy you should get.

Never attempt to self-medicate

When you are sent home to recover fully, itโ€™s important that you follow the instructions of your attending physician. Do as told and take only the medications in the doses that have been prescribed to you at the right time. To avoid counterfeits, get the products only from accredited pharmacies. You can ask your doctor for recommendations.
Never attempt to self medicate or even replace the meds prescribed with cheaper alternatives. There might be differences in dosage and substance composition, and these might delay your recovery.

Getting involved in an accident is really unfortunate, especially if itโ€™s caused by the negligence of others. If you are injured, it is important that you follow the advice of the medical professional who assisted you to avoid complications.

Sight Sciences Introduces the Next-Generation OMNI Surgical System for Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery

OMNI Surgical System for Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery

Sight Sciences, Inc., a growth-stage medical device company transforming the two fastest-growing segments in ophthalmology and optometry, glaucoma and dry eye disease, announced the launch of its next-generation OMNIยฎ Surgical System for microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures.

The OMNI Surgical System combines two distinct angle procedures โ€“ ab interno trabeculotomy and transluminal viscoelastic delivery. It is the only MIGS device that allows surgeons to target all three points of aqueous humor outflow resistance โ€“ trabecular meshwork, Schlemmโ€™s canal and distal collector channels.

โ€œWe designed the next generation of our OMNI Surgical System to provide improved ergonomics, intuitive use and smooth microcatheter deployment and retraction, while continuing to deliver excellent outcomes as a standalone treatment, or as a procedure performed in conjunction with cataract surgery,โ€ said Sight Sciences Chief Commercial Officer, Shawn Oโ€™Neil. โ€œWeโ€™re excited to announce the availability of this improved system, which incorporates many changes based on feedback from our physician customers.โ€

The upgraded system features several updates designed to enhance its ergonomics and usability including:

An updated Luer lock fitting and pull pin to provide increased efficiency in the priming and preparation of the device,
An ergonomic handle and flexi-grip surface, which fits comfortably and provides stability in the surgeonโ€™s hand, and
Enhanced gearing and intuitive wheel design that enables seamless deployment and retraction of the microcatheter.

โ€œThe OMNI Surgical System has been revolutionary for my practice because of its effectiveness and ability to offer titratable therapy to a wide range of patients with glaucoma,โ€ said Blake K. Williamson MD, MPH, MS, refractive surgeon and MIGS expert at Williamson Eye in Baton Rouge, La. โ€œThese changes will improve the functionality and intuitive use of the OMNI System, making it even more comfortable and efficient to perform both viscodilations and trabeculotomies.โ€

Initial published results from early use of the OMNI Surgical System show meaningful reductions in intraocular pressure (IOP) and medication use.1 Several large-scale, multi-center retrospective and prospective MIGS clinical studies further evaluating the OMNI Surgical System are underway and in their advanced stages.

About OMNIยฎ Surgical System
The OMNI Surgical System is a manually operated device for delivery of small amounts of viscoelastic fluid, for example Healonยฎ or HealonGVยฎ from Abbott Medical Optics (AMO), Amviscยฎ from Bausch & Lomb, or PROVISCยฎ from Alcon, during ophthalmic surgery. It is also indicated to cut trabecular meshwork tissue during trabeculotomy procedures.

The OMNI System should not be used in cases where there is insufficient visualization of the anterior chamber. The following conditions may prohibit sufficient visualization required for safe and successful cannula and microcatheter placement: corneal edema, corneal haze, corneal opacity, or any other conditions that may inhibit surgeon view.

The OMNI Surgical System is a tool, not a treatment, and is indicated for use as specified above; it is not specifically cleared by the FDA to lower intraocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma.

About Sight Sciences
Founded in 2011, Sight Sciences has developed, and is now commercial with intelligently designed and engineered products that target the underlying causes of the worldโ€™s most prevalent eye diseases. The companyโ€™s surgical glaucoma product portfolio features the OMNIยฎ Surgical System, a dually-indicated device that facilitates the performance of both trabeculotomy and transluminal viscoelastic delivery. Using proprietary multi-modal functionality, OMNI allows surgeons to target of all three sources of resistance in the conventional outflow pathway (trabecular meshwork, Schlemmโ€™s canal, and collector channels) with a single device and single corneal incision.

Activ Surgical Introduces New Surgical Intelligence and Sensing Platform to Revolutionize Surgery

New Surgical Intelligence and Sensing Platform to Revolutionize Surgery

Activ Surgical, a pioneering digital surgery company focused on improving surgical efficiency, accuracy, patient outcomes and accessibility, announced its ActivEdge platform. ActivEdge, an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning (ML) platform, is designed to provide critical real-time intelligence and visualization to improve patient outcomes, avoid preventable surgical errors and complications, and provide significant overall savings to healthcare systems. The platform and its associated products will be initially available in the U.S. market, with plans to commercialize globally in 2021.

The future of surgery is collaborative, with human judgment and wisdom augmented by robotics precision,” said Todd Usen, CEO, Activ Surgical. “With nearly 400,000 deaths in the U.S. every year due to avoidable medical errors, our surgical intelligence platform is designed to dramatically improve outcomes, safety and accessibility by arming surgeons with real-time information to make better informed decisions. We look forward to empowering global access to best-in-class surgery, regardless of location – saving millions of lives in the process.”

Preventable medical errors are currently the third leading cause of death, after heart attacks and cancer. Surgical errors account for 26% of these errors and are estimated to cost more than $36 billion in the U.S. Activ Surgical will initially focus on the 2.2 million most common laparoscopic procedures, including Cholecystectomy, Colectomy, Hysterectomy and Gastrectomy, where blood flow and critical structure identification are crucial to optimal outcomes.

“Innovation in the surgical vision category is long overdue; the most commonly employed surgical imaging process, ICG, uses fluorescent dye invented more than 70 years ago and does not offer real-time, objective physiologic information to surgeons when they critically need it during procedures,” said Dr. Peter Kim, co-founder and chief science officer, Activ Surgical. “Activ Surgical is designed to empower surgeons to make better informed decisions by offering real-time intelligence and visualization to dramatically reduce medical complications and surgical errors.”

“The next frontier in surgery is advanced imaging, led by innovation from companies like Activ Surgical, to enable intraoperative imaging and image overlays, guided by machine learning,” said Dr. Vipul (Vip) Patel, Medical Director of the Global Robotics Institute at Advent Health Celebration and Medical Director of the Advent Health Cancer Institute Urologic Oncology Program and Activ Survical Advisory Board member. “The potential for Activ Surgical to use AI and machine learning to inform robotics-assisted surgery – bringing together the best of human judgment and wisdom augmented by robotics precision – is a game changer in helping the surgical community achieve better outcomes.”

According to Dr. Steven D Schwaitzberg, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at University at Buffalo and Activ Surgical Advisory Board member, “As a surgeon, I rely heavily on surgical imaging to make informed decisions regarding procedures. Now that the majority of imaging systems have achieved optimal optical resolution, the next phase of innovation will be driven by companies like Activ Surgical who are developing new value-added features, including the visualization of tissue perfusion.”

Activ Surgical’s product portfolio, built on its ActiveEdge platform, includes hardware agnostic imaging software and computer-driven guidance systems, both for scopes and robots, to improve situational awareness and real-time imaging during surgical procedures and enable safe tissue access.

ActivSight, the first product based on the company’s platform, works dynamically and seamlessly with any installed visualization system to provide real-time intraoperative visual data and images not currently available to surgeons through existing technologies. The imaging module is an easy-to-adapt, connected platform that seamlessly attaches to today’s laparoscopic and arthroscopic systems so outcomes can be improved immediately, providing real-time, on demand insights, integrated into standard monitors. With ActivSight, surgical systems – from scopes to robots – can visualize blood flow in real-time with no workflow impact, unlike ICG, which does not offer real-time information to surgeons. ActivSight is expected to be cleared by the FDA in 2020. To date, eight major hospital networks across the U.S. have been established as pilot sites.

ActivInsight, the company’s second product, will transform massive amounts of data gathered intraoperatively to help characterize tissue and critical structures, providing surgeons with augmented visuals and real-time guidance. The AI and ML-based product will be designed for continuous improvement and will be underpinned by one of the industry’s largest annotated data sets to be developed by Activ Surgical over the next 12 months. ActivInsight is expected to be available within the next two years.

Additional robotics-assisted surgery offerings, ActivAssist and ActivPilot, are also in active development. ActivAssist will use ML based on the ActivInsight data set to optimally position scopes, allowing surgeons to perform at the highest level. ActivPilot will perform autonomous procedures with a surgeon in the loop to consistently achieve best-possible outcomes. Anticipated release dates for these early stage offerings are not being shared at this time.

About Activ Surgical
Founded in 2017, Activ Surgical is a first-of-its-kind digital surgery company focused on improving surgical efficiency, accuracy, patient outcomes and accessibility for both endoscopic and robotically-assisted procedures. The company completed the world’s first autonomous robotic surgery of soft tissue, and is building hardware-agnostic surgical software that allows minimally invasive surgical systems to autonomously collaborate with surgeons. Activ Surgical’s patent-protected surgical software platform reduces unintended and preventable surgical complications by using artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning and analytics to enhance a surgeon’s intra-operative decision making. Activ Surgical is privately held, and backed by leading global venture capital firms including DNS Capital, GreatPoint Ventures (GPV), Tao Capital Partners, SONY Innovation Fund, Rising Tide Financial, WS Investment Company and Mintz.
