Philips marks new milestones to improve people s health across the globe at WEF 2020

Philips marks new milestones to improve people s health across the globe at WEF 2020

Royal Philips , a global leader in health technology, announced new milestones in its aim to make the world healthier and more sustainable through innovation. In collaboration with its partners, Philips aims to address pressing societal issues with a focus on the United Nationโ€™s Sustainable Development Goals 3, 12 and 13 aimed at improving access to affordable care, the transition to a circular economy and actions on climate change. The companyโ€™s mission is to improve the lives of 3 billion people a year by 2030.

โ€œThrough innovation we can leverage the synergies between health and sustainability giving great opportunity to improve peopleโ€™s lives,โ€ said Frans van Houten, CEO of Royal Philips, in the run-up to Davos 2020. โ€œWhether itโ€™s empowering clinicians to improve patient outcomes or creating new business models and circular economy solutions to reduce healthcareโ€™s carbon footprint, we know that achieving the scale necessary to make a global difference can only be done through inclusive stakeholder partnerships that create true end-to-end solutions.โ€

Recent milestones achieved by Philips in collaboration with its partners include:

SDG3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

Half the worldโ€™s population still has no access to healthcare, while studies show that in many well-developed healthcare systems as much as 25% of health spending is wasteful. Philips is committed to co-creating high-quality affordable healthcare solutions in which resources are used in the most efficient and responsible way. In 2019, Philipsโ€™ products and solutions improved the lives of 1.64 billion globally, compared to 1.54 billion in 2018, and improved the lives of 194 million in underserved communities compared to 175 million in 2018.

Last Friday, Philips announced it has signed a new partnership agreement with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Republic of the Congoโ€™s Ministry of Health & Population to reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates by 50 percent in the countryโ€™s health facilities over the next five years, especially in remote areas. The three partners will work together to develop a large-scale โ€˜Emergency obstetric and newborn careโ€™ (EmONC) program that will reach more than 500,000 women and 70,000 newborns, improving access to high quality and affordable maternal, neonatal and child healthcare. The program benefitted from a high level meeting at WEF 2019 that galvanized the support for the initiative from a large group of stakeholders.

In the US, Philips partners with the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), The American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) to provide the equipment for virtual clinics within VFW and American Legion posts throughout the United States. The project allows US veterans to conduct virtual appointments with their VA providers without having to travel to a distant VA regional medical facility or outpatient clinic.

SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Philips is on track to deliver on the circular economy commitment it made at the 2018 WEF Annual Meeting that by 2020 the company will take back and repurpose all the large medical systems that its customers are prepared to return to it. With reverse logistics in place, adding a return flow from all major markets, the global roll-out of Philipsโ€™ product take-back and remanufacturing program is currently underway. Philips has also expanded its parts recovery activities, allowing the company to re-use more components.

Through co-chairmanship of PACE (Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy), Philips CEO Frans van Houten is supporting the circular economy, helping the industry to formulate change, spearheading implementation, and assembling a coalition of like-minded companies prepared to make circular economy pledges. Eight new PACE reports were launched in 2019. PACE activities currently run across China, Southeast Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America, and its Leadership Group grew from around 50 in 2018 to over 70 global leaders in 2019. Last week, PACE announced that four new members are joining its board. Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UN Environment Program, Lisa Jackson, VP Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives for Apple, Ellen MacArthur, Founder Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Stientje van Veldhoven, Minister for the Environment and Housing for the Government of the Netherlands.

SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Earlier Philips announced that it has once again been placed on the CDP Climate Change A List [1], making this the seventh consecutive year it has achieved a CDP A-list ranking for its leadership in corporate climate action. Philips has been recognized for its actions during the last reporting year to reduce emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop the low-carbon economy.

An example is last yearโ€™s successful opening of Windpark Krammer in the Netherlands enabling Philips to power 100% of its Netherlands operations with renewable energy, matching the 100% renewable energy target already achieved in the companyโ€™s US operations.

Lopburi Cancer Hospital on their usage of Accuray's Radixact Treatment Delivery System

In October 2019 Accuray announced that Thailandโ€™s Lopburi Cancer Hospital, a leading facility in the Mueang district of Thailand designated a national center of excellence became their first client in the Asia-Pacific region to clinically use the combination of RaySearchโ€™s treatment planning system RayStationยฎ with Accuray’s Radixactยฎ Treatment Delivery System.

You can find the full announcement here.

Hospital & Healthcare Management – HHM Global conducted an interview with Birgit Fleurent, Chief Marketing Officer, Accuray as well as with Lopburi Cancer Hospital.

View the full interview with Birgit Fleurent highlights on Accuray’s development is the Asia-Pacific Region and how Accuray platforms are helping to change the landscape of cancer treatment methodology today.

Below are the answers from Lopburi Cancer Hospital on why they opted for Accuray’s Radixactยฎ Treatment Delivery System and the benefits Lopburi Cancer Hospital has seen since using the system and how the center has become a pioneer in advanced technology to treat patients.

Q1. Lopburi has the distinction of being one of the most innovative hospitals in the region. You are the first Asia Pacific hospital to treat patients with RayStation and Radixact systems are a testimony to that. What was the idea behind opting for RayStation and Radixact as your treatment partner systems simultaneously?

Ans: We like to expand the treatment capability of our center with the Radixact System. And RayStation is selected as TPS for Radixact mainly because we already have RayStation for other system and we do not like to increase a number of variety of TPS in our center. Additionally, we like to utilize the advanced features of RayStation for this advanced treatment machine.

Q2. Tell us more about RayStationโ€™s automated breast planning capabilities. What are the benefits Lopburi Cancer Hospital derived from it? Also, if you could throw some light on its unique multi-criteria optimization.

Ans: The automated breast planning reduced planning time for simple breast cases. And multi-criteria optimization helps make planning complex cases less difficult.

Q3. How has the installation of the Accurayโ€™s Radixact Treatment Delivery System improved the process of radiation therapy in your hospital?

Ans: Radixact allows daily image verification in 3D to become practical. Also, treatment for complex cases is less difficult because the system does not require multiple couch angles or any accessories attached to the gantry.

Q4. How effective have RayStation and Radixact systems been in resolving treatment issues? Can you cite some recent examples where both these systems have excelled?

Ans: The systems reduce complexity of planning and treating a target which is larger than conventional field size. Also, when treating cases with highly constrained organ at risk we can achieve clinical goals without a large number of complex treatment fields or arcs.

Q5. We have often observed that while the systems like RayStation as well as Radixact make the entire examination process seamless, yet there is an ample amount of training required for handling them in the exact way they should be. What are the steps taken by Lopburi in this regard?

Ans: We assigned one specific person to observe the whole installation and training process and another one person will collaborate when the department is not too busy.

Q1. How exciting is it to be associated with Lopburi Cancer Hospital, Thailand and where does your company go from here? How do you plan to spread across the Asia Pacific region where the opportunities are immense but the socio-political landscape is complex too?

Ans: It is very exciting to have established this partnership with Lopburi Cancer Hospital, known as a national center of excellence for cancer treatment. It is especially rewarding to know that patients will be receiving the best and most personalized carefor their cancer with the hospitalโ€™s purchase of the Radixact System combined with RayStation treatment planning.

Accuray has a growing presence in Asia Pacific, and it is through our work with exceptional distributors that this growth is possible. Our distributor partners have strong local knowledge and networks, and we rely on them to plan for and understand the impact of the regional economic and political climates.

Q2. How frequent is the research and development which keeps taking place as far as Radixact is concerned?ย  Is there any customized approach that you follow in dealing with specific clients from specific geographies?

Ans: We at Accuray are known for innovation in radiotherapy and have development programs in place on an ongoing basis for our systems, software and service to meet the needs and challenges of our customers. We do this work internally as well as in partnership with our customers in order to ensure we have the most precise, efficient and patient-first offering available long-term.

Q3. The system has already made inroads in Breast, Prostate, Lung, Intracranial and Head & Neck treatments. Are there are any other range of cancer treatments which the company is currently planning for in the near future?

Ans: In fact, the Radixact System, with its unique helical architecture, is ideally suited to treat any indication and any patient. Today, it is used in this capacity in many cancer centers around the world.

Q4. How unique is the Radixact Delivery Treatment Platform from its competition and mention some immediate benefits it can give to its users?

Ans: The Radixact System, our next-generation TomoTherapy platform, has a unique helical architecture not found on any other linac today. Based on a CT scanner platform, the system provides continuous delivery of radiation from 360 degrees around the patient, or delivery from clinician-specified beam angles. These unique features, combined with daily 3D image guidance, enable physicians to deliver highly accurate, individualized dose distributions which precisely conform to the shape of the patientโ€™s tumor while minimizing dose to normal, healthy tissue, resulting in fewer side effects for patients.

Ourunique design allows for exquisite precision and accuracy in treating both simple as well as very complex cancer cases. This versatility and precision are an advantage for clinicians who are seeing a broad range of clinical cases, from breast and prostate to total marrow irradiationand total body irradiation, such as is the case for the Lopburi Cancer Hospital.

Q5. How is CyberKnife Systems, the TomoTherapy Systems, and the Radixact Delivery Treatment Delivery Platform all put together helping in changing the shape of cancer treatment methodology today?

Ans: The innovations we have developed across the CyberKnife System, the only robotic SRS/SBRT System, as well as the Radixact System, the next-generation TomoTherapyIG-IMRT/SBRT platform, truly provide the most precise, patient-first treatment available today. We are pioneers in the development of technology that automatically adapts and synchronizes the movement of the radiation beam to the target in real-time, and in the creation of radiation therapy delivery systems that will enable our customers to safely and precisely deliver hypofractionated and ultra-hypofractionated treatments to their patients. These treatment modalities will increasingly become standard of care in todayโ€™s value-based care environment, and allows for a clinically effective and highly efficient workflow we are very proud to help our customers achieve.

Icon Group Improves Patient Experience and Provider Service Levels with InterSystems HealthShare Health Connect

Icon Group Improves Patient Experience and Provider Service Levels with InterSystems HealthShare Health Connect

Icon Group is Australia’s largest dedicated cancer care provider with more than 2,800 employees. Icon’s businesses have extensive capability and experience in radiation oncology, medical oncology, haematology, chemotherapy compounding and pharmacy. Icon Group has grown rapidly in Australia, New Zealand and Asia over the last four years with expansion continuing.

Icon has 12 major clinical applications supporting 36 oncology centres and 60 pharmacies. As they grew, Icon used point-to-point interfaces to integrate these software applications and connect to external healthcare providers. However, the effort to develop and support also grew rapidly. To remove a barrier to further growth, Icon decided to implement a centralised integration platform.

After a wide search, Icon selectedย HealthShare Health Connectย from InterSystems. Health Connect was the logical choice, says Ben Swindale, General Manager of IT for Icon Group, both because of InterSystems’ strong focus on healthcare and its global presence, as well as the technology’s inherent flexibility and ability to integrate core systems using HL7 messaging standards, including new standards such asย FHIR.

Since implementing Health Connect, Icon Group has reduced the time to integrate core applications with other information systems from months to weeks, improved the experience of patients, reduced the volume of faxed information and PDF discharge summaries, and increased service levels to client hospitals, all using InterSystems HealthShare Health Connect as a centralised integration platform.

With Health Connect, Icon now has the ability to rapidly integrate to client healthcare provider systems. Within a short period of time, it quickly ramped up to 31 interfaces supporting six different HL7 message types Admit Discharge Transfer (ADT), Referral (REF), Scheduling Information Unsolicited (SIU), Medical Document Management (MDM), Detail Financial Transaction (DFT) including Observation (ORU) and the systems of five external organisations.

With consistent patient information available across its own hospital operations, Icon has improved patient experience and reduced data entry, duplication of information, and the potential for errors. “Weโ€™ve been able to provide a more welcoming experience for our patients,” said Swindale, General Manager, IT for Icon Group. “We are not asking for the same information if our patient has been seen in another Icon facility.”

Icon Group has also increased service levels to client healthcare providers. An Icon pharmacy can now receive patient demographic data and other information directly from hospital systems. The results of patient interactions are then able to be integrated back into the hospital’s electronic medical record (EMR). “Using Health Connect and HL7 is faster, makes the hospital medical record more complete and accurate, and reduces the risk of manual data entry errors,” said Swindale.

Previously, Icon delivered patient discharge summaries in various ways, including fax or securely emailed PDF documents. These point-to-point methods are now being phased out. “With Health Connect we now have standard interfaces for patient feeds, discharge summaries and external healthcare providers and it is just a matter of connecting them up,” said Swindale.

Re-platforming these procedures onto Health Connect has ushered in digital transformation for Icon and has reduced the time to connect new facilities. “Health Connect provides an easier path to deliver ‘best in class’ solutions for our clients,” said Swindale. “In the past, each integration was different, so we couldn’t easily reuse existing structures. For a recent new pharmacy, it only took two weeks to get into production from design, and the new interface can be extended to other sites when they are ready.”

Icon used both InterSystems support on-site and online training to get its team up to speed, and employs local implementation partner DWS to augment its team’s resources. “InterSystems has been really responsive. They spent time early on training us and helping us to build the first few interfaces,” said Swindale. “DWS also helped us get the foundations in place, giving us their best practice on developing the system and structuring the interfaces.”

Icon Group will be expanding its use of Health Connect and relationship with InterSystems in the future. “As we expand globally, we will be looking for other opportunities to work with InterSystems,” said Swindale. “We see InterSystems as one of our key strategic partners. They are integral to what we do.”

Ground-breaking scalp cooling treatment that minimises hair loss in Middle Eastern chemo patients showcased at Arab Heath 2020

Ground-breaking scalp cooling treatment that minimises hair loss in Middle Eastern chemo patients showcased at Arab Heath 2020

A ground-breaking British technology that prevents Middle Eastern cancer patients from losing their hair during chemotherapy will be showcased at Arab Health 2020. Scalp cooling expert, Paxman is exhibiting the next generation Paxman Scalp Cooling System (PSCS) at the exhibition, which has been designed to help men and women keep their hair and retain a feeling of normality during treatment for cancer. Chemotherapy-induced hair loss is widely recognised as one of the most traumatic side effects associated with cancer treatment.

For many patients hair loss can have a detrimental impact on their sense of identity โ€“ a visible sign that they have cancer. In fact 8% of female cancer patients say they would decline treatmentfor fear of hair loss, which remains a well-known side effect of many chemotherapy regimens, affecting approximately 65%of individuals undergoing treatment.

Today scalp cooling also known as the ‘cold cap’ is proven to be effective in combatting hair loss and is a well-accepted treatment throughout the world. It can be used with all solid tumour cancers. The Paxman Scalp Cooling System is used extensively throughout the UK in NHS hospitals and private clinics and is well established in many other countries across 38 US states Europe and the Middle East โ€“ including the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, and Turkey.

Extending its reach across the Middle East, Paxman has just appointed new distribution partners in Saudi Arabia and Israel and will begin selling scalp cooling systems to hospitals in 2020. The British manufacturer will be taking advantage of its presence at Arab Health to strengthen its links across the Middle East โ€“ where its pioneering systems are already installed in state-of-the-art healthcare facilities across the region. This includes, in the UAE, Mediclinic City Hospital โ€“ South Africaโ€™s leading private hospital group โ€“ in the world-famous Dubai Healthcare City; and more recently the multi-speciality hospital American Hospital Dubai.

The company has plans to expand to Israel and Saudi Arabia in 2020 and are looking to create new partnerships at Arab Health to further develop their reach to key markets including Egypt and Bahrain as well as other parts of the world. Richard Paxman, CEO at Paxmansaid: โ€œWe are delighted to be able to offer scalp cooling to Middle Eastern patients and are keen to find new partners from across theregion. Scalp cooling can result in a high level of retention or in some cases completely preserve the hair for patients undergoing chemotherapy โ€“ a chance for them to retain their sense of self while encouraging a positive attitude towards treatment.โ€

โ€œAs a company we want to empower patients, professionals and other people all over the world โ€“ especially in places where hair loss remains a stigma. We want to help improve peoplesโ€™ self-confidence in facing what can be one of the most distressing side effects of chemotherapy โ€“ and give them a choice.โ€

The Arab Health Exhibition & Congress is taking place from 27 January โ€“ 30 January 2020. Throughout the exhibition the Paxman Scalp Cooling System will be located in hall 2 stand D12. To find out more about scalp cooling visit www.paxmanscalpcooling.com Notes to editor:

About PAXMAN
Paxman is the leading global expert in scalp cooling, for the prevention of hair loss during chemotherapy. It works by reducing the temperature of the scalp by a few degrees immediately before, during and after the administration of chemotherapy.

Liquid coolant passes through the cap, extracting heat from the personโ€™s scalp, ensuring it remains at an even, constant temperature to minimise hair loss. Made from lightweight silicone, the scalp cooling cap is soft and flexible – providing a snug, yet comfortable fit during treatment, moulding to all head shapes and sizes. The Paxman family have developed award-winning cooling products and systems for the over thirty years.

Paxmanโ€™s clinically proven cold cap system has helped over 100,000 cancer patients in more than 40 countries worldwide to retain their hair during chemotherapy โ€“ from the UK to the US and across Europe and the Middle East.

CAREhab and the Society of Rehabilitation Medicine Join forces to Elevate Asia's Healthcare Industry

Asiaโ€™s annual premier healthcare platform, CAREhab, an event dedicated to facilitating conversations and new collaborations within the healthcare community, will be held in conjunction with the 6th Singapore Rehabilitation Conference from 14 to 15 February 2020 at the MAX Atria at Singapore EXPO.

Jointly organised by SingEx Exhibitions and the Society of Rehabilitation Medicine (Singapore) (SRMS), CAREhab โ€“ Singapore Rehabilitation Conference 2020 is an interdisciplinary platform born out of a renewed partnership between both organising parties.

The event is set to bring together the entire healthcare community to address industry challenges, showcase good practices and encourage collaboration across the different institutes and regionsโ€”and in turn, elevate Asiaโ€™s healthcare standards. The two-day conference will cover an exhaustive range of pertinent topics including neuro rehab, intensive care unit (ICU) rehab, sports rehab, amputee rehab, spinal cord injury rehab and paediatric rehab, among many others.

โ€œSingEx Exhibitions is delighted to be co-organising CAREhab 2020 with the Society of Rehabilitation Medicine (Singapore), an association that we have been creating synergies with from the very beginnings of the show in years past. Delegates can expect a carefully curated, strong academic programme, covering a full spectrum of rehabilitation topics. An interactive and experiential zone that takes you through a patientโ€™s journey

As with previous editions of CAREhab, the third run will feature an exhibition component that is free-to-attend. Serving as the collaborative platform which brings together healthcare stakeholders from across the globe, the exhibition will enable innovators and industry disruptors to be part of the journey in improving healthcare efficiency in the Asia-Pacific region. The exhibition not only engages homecare givers and medical professionals, but also members of the public who relate with rehabilitation in some way.

SingEx Exhibitions is also working with non-profit organisations, Abilities Beyond Limitations and Expectations (ABLE) and Aphasia.SG, to create an interactive exhibition area where attendees will discover how they can play a part in a patientโ€™s recovery journey. The โ€œInteractive Patient Journey Experience Zoneโ€ will take delegates and attendees through the process of facilitating patients outside of clinical settings, including home, office, community and bank.
