Collaboration enables the development of Aethlons Hemopurifier in tandem with SeaStars cartridges for multiple clinical targets

 SeaStars cartridges

Aethlon Medical, Inc. and SeaStar Medical, Inc. announced a cross-licensing agreement to jointly develop their respective medical devices to address the care and management of critically ill patients.

Aethlon Medical is developing the Hemopurifier, a first-in-class blood purification cartridge used to remove a range of different particles from the blood, including cancer promoting exosomes for the treatment of cancers with no adequate alternative therapy and viruses for the treatment of life-threatening viral diseases. SeaStar’s platform of cartridges include the CLR 2.0 Hemofilter which is FDA 510K cleared for acute kidney injury (AKI), congestive heart failure (CHF) and pulmonary edema and is currently being marketed for organ preservation in the solid organ transplant market. Each company’s cartridges are designed to fit onto standard, hospital ICU-based equipment, either independently or together, and the companies plan to jointly develop complete treatment solutions that will allow deployment into multiple inpatient and outpatient treatment settings in any clinical indication where combined use of the Hemopurifier and CPCs may improve or expand indications for use, including but not limited to infectious disease, oncology and organ preservation and transplant.

“The potential synergy of our two companies’ platforms should allow penetration into multiple unaddressed markets,” said Timothy C. Rodell, M.D., Interim Chief Executive Officer of Aethlon Medical. “Many solid organ transplant patients’ outcomes are impacted by viral infections, including hepatitis C and cytomegalovirus (CMV), so the demonstrated ability of the Aethlon Hemopurifier to clear viruses could be complementary to SeaStar’s CLR 2.0’s ability to improve donor organ function. Likewise, inflammation has a role in cancer, which could make the SeaStar products complementary to the Hemopurifier.

Aethlon and SeaStar align on combining their complementary novel medical devices to address critical unmet needs,” said Charles J. Fisher Jr., M.D., Chief Executive Officer of SeaStar Medical. “Combinations of the Hemopurifier and the SeaStar cartridges present unique and promising development paths. After joining Aethlon’s board of directors in November 2017, I realized that both teams are equally passionate about providing innovative medical products designed to improve the survival of patients with cancer, infectious and inflammatory disorders.”

Delta Electronics Provides Uninterrupted Power Supply at the Research Institute of Childrens Infections in St Petersburg

Delta Electronics Uninterrupted Power Supply

Delta Electronics, the leading provider of switching power supply systems and uninterrupted power solutions, has completed a project installing UPS systems at the facility of Scientific Research Institute of Children’s Infections of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FSBI) in St. Petersburg, Russia. The project was completed with the support of Delta Electronicsโ€™ partner, Spectr RS.

In todayโ€™s Russia, a lot of attention is paid to the modernization of the countryโ€™s healthcare system. The governmentโ€™s targeted programs include implementation of specialized IT solutions that help medical institutions work more efficiently and improve the quality of patient care. One such medical institution is the FSBI. Operating since 1927, it is Russiaโ€™s oldest research center for children’s infections research study. Today the Institute is involved both in providing medical assistance to children with infectious diseases and in conducting research that constitutes an invaluable contribution to science and expands our knowledge about the human body.

As part of the latest renovation and modernization of the Instituteโ€™s medical facility and the Radiology Diagnostics Department, Deltaโ€™s UPS systems were installed for MRI and CT scanners, CCTV systems, fire alarm systems, lighting and smoke exhaust systems in the Instituteโ€™s medical facility. The project, carried out from February 2013 till September 2016, covered a total floor area of 29,136.8 square meters.

To meet the objective of ensuring uninterrupted power supply at FSBI, Petrobalt, the general contractor of the renovation, together with specialists representing Spectr RS selected UPS systems manufactured by Delta Electronics: the Ultron family HPH series UPS with capacities of 60 and 120 kVA and the highest efficiency in the segmentโ€”up to 96%). These UPS systems are based on digital signal processing (DSP) technology, which helps reduce the number of electronic components and brings down the failure rate, which is extremely important in the work of high-precision medical devices. In addition, the systemโ€™s reliability is boosted by the fact that it includes redundant auxiliary power and fans. The watchdog circuit controls the redundant auxiliary power circuit, decreasing the probability of system failure that may be caused by malfunction of any of the elements.

This solution was aimed at increasing the working reliability of expensive magnetic resonance, computed tomography equipment, and the ancillary medical devices in the radiological diagnostics rooms of the medical institution.

At the moment, the UPS systems installed at the Institute can support power to the equipment for 15 minutes during a power outage in the mains. In addition, especially for this project, the contractor produced battery cabinets, which perfectly fit in the limited space at the facility.

โ€œWe believe that the solutions developed by Delta Electronics are the best in their class because they offer a combination of maximum available power, unparalleled energy efficiency, and excellent parameters for medical facilities, which require highly reliable power protection systems,โ€ said Darya Borok, marketing specialist at Spectr RS. โ€œIn the end, all this will allow the medical centers to work more efficiently and to take better care of their little patients.โ€

Piedmont Henry Hospital Goes Vertical to Improve Patient Wait Times

Piedmont Henry Hospital

Piedmont Henry Hospital recently unveiled brand new, first of its kind in Georgia vertical treatment spaces in the hospitalโ€™s emergency department (ED) designed to provide better, faster care for patients.

Known as a vertical model, the hospital converted 10 rooms in the emergency department into 18 treatment spaces fully equipped to expedite care for lower acuity patients and free up much-needed bed capacity for more acutely ill patients. Instead of horizontal stretchers (beds), the vertical treatment spaces feature a comfortable recliner, monitors, oxygen and suction equipment. In addition to ensuring a faster delivery of care, this new treatment model has proven successful in improving patient safety and satisfaction.

โ€œThis is major milestone not only for our hospital but also for the Georgia health community,โ€ said Deborah Armstrong, CEO of Piedmont Henry. โ€œMaking this investment in our community not only shows Piedmont Henryโ€™s commitment to better serve our patients, it also ensures they have the best possible experience while in our care.โ€

Piedmont Henry has seen a significant growth in volume over the last several years. As one of the busiest in the state and in the Piedmont Healthcare system, Piedmont Henryโ€™s ED serves close to 90,000 patients each year.

โ€œNobody plans on going to the ED but if you have to come, you want to leave as soon as possible,โ€ said Dr. William Watkins, ED medical director at Piedmont Henry. โ€œThe addition of these vertical treatment spaces allows us to quickly and effectively treat more patients, which helps reduce wait times and length of stay.โ€

In addition to this project, Piedmont Henry recently added two new operating room suites and a minor procedure room to its Outpatient Surgery Center. Using the latest cutting-edge technology to provide the highest quality of care and services possible, the additional surgical space is expected to improve the efficiency of surgeons and staff, allowing them to perform more procedures in a safe, comfortable and timely manner.

Providing cancer patients an opportunity for increased participation in their treatment, Varianย  announced its collaboration with Tennessee Oncology for the implementation of Noona, a software application for managing patient symptoms and capturing patient reported outcomes (PROs) in cancer care. As part of this collaboration, Noona will be deployed at more than 30 centers across Tennessee, with the goal of reaching approximately 25,000 patients per year.

The Tennessee Oncology network treats nearly 50 percent of all cancer patients in Tennessee, with a large percentage residing in rural settings. The implementation of Noona will provide these patients with a better way to communicate their symptoms and other relevant clinical information to their care team, while eliminating common barriers to adoption, such as patients’ physical location or technology adeptness.

“We put patients first and seek out technology that goes the extra step. A desirable benefit of Noona’s advanced information intelligence is the ability to more closely connect to our patient’s quality of life and the advantage of aligning care to their changing needs,” said Dr. Natalie Dickson, chief medical officer of Tennessee Oncology. “All patients deserve to receive the best quality of care regardless of where they live, and we are continually seeking ways to make that happen.”

“Leveraging data and information technology hastens our goal of delivering the most advanced care to every newly diagnosed patient, wherever they live,” adds Dr. Jeff Patton, chief executive officer of Tennessee Oncology. “Noona’s outcome data collection pleasantly aligns with our value-based world. Our patients deserve our best.”

“The healthcare industry strives to move from disease-centered to person-centered careโ€”which requires us to capture information that describes the patient experience,” said Corey Zankowski, senior vice president, Oncology Software Solutions, Varian. “Noona helps us achieve this goal by better connecting patients to their personal treatment and enabling clinicians to collect meaningful PRO data to adapt treatments for each patient and to predict future outcomes.”

Noona is structured to collect a standardized dataset that is centered around patients’ quality of lifeโ€”including new or shifting symptoms that may signal a necessary shift in care. The interface is designed for an optimal user experience and with seamless access in mind. It may be accessed on any device with a web browser or through its native Appleยฎ or Androidโ„ข app. Patients are assigned a treatment module that aligns with their cancer type and allows them to regularly report and track their symptoms while sharing their questions and concerns instantly.

Positive outcomes reported from clinics worldwide that have already adopted Noona include:

Increased clinical efficiency and reduced workloads, saving up to 60 minutes per day, per user.
Improved information capture with a 90 percent patient response rate for symptom questionnaires.
