Australia’s New South Wales Government has confirmed planning approval for the new A$2 billion ($1.4 billion) Bankstown Hospital, marking the largest single capital investment in a public hospital in the history of New South Wales. Demolition and site remediation are already underway in Bankstown’s central business district in Sydney, as the project progresses toward its main construction phase.

Multiplex Named as Early Contractor Involvement Partner

Multiplex has been appointed as the early contractor involvement partner for the development, working alongside the project team, designers, hospital clinicians, and staff to finalise the design ahead of the main construction phase. The State Significant Development application received recent approval, clearing the path for what is being described by the government as the most ambitious public hospital investment the state has ever undertaken.

Main construction on the Bankstown Hospital is scheduled to commence in 2027, following ongoing demolition and site remediation activities that are expected to continue throughout 2026.

A 14-Storey Facility Built for Sydney’s South-West Communities

The new 14-storey hospital is designed to significantly increase bed capacity and treatment spaces, with the goal of enhancing healthcare provision for the fast-growing communities of Sydney’s south-west. The facility will feature a multi-storey car park, an expanded emergency department, operating theatres, and an intensive care unit.

The hospital will also deliver services for women and children, including maternity care, mental health inpatient care, ambulatory care, cancer facilities, and aged care health services. A separate emergency drop-off area and dedicated parking for emergency patients and their carers are also included in the approved plans.

Government Ministers Outline Investment and Accessibility Benefits

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park stated: “The new A$2bn Bankstown Hospital is part of the A$3.8bn the Minns Labor Government is investing in Western Sydney hospitals over the next four years. The state-of-the-art new Bankstown Hospital will deliver more beds and treatment spaces and deliver critical care for the growing population of south-west Sydney that will help meet the healthcare needs of the fast-growing and diverse community.”

NSW Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully added: “This approval is a major boost for Bankstown, giving local communities better access to modern health facilities closer to home. Well located near public transport, including the future Bankstown Metro station, the new hospital will support the renewal of the city centre while making it easier for patients, staff and visitors to access services.”

Consultation and Planning to Continue as Design Advances

Project planning will continue with ongoing consultation involving hospital staff, carers, patients, visitors, and community members as design details progress. The final service offering for the hospital is expected to be confirmed as planning advances further.

The Bankstown Hospital development is part of a broader infrastructure push across Western Sydney hospitals. Separately, the NSW Government recently reached a construction milestone at the A$540 million Westmead Centre for Mental Health, reflecting the state’s continued investment in public healthcare infrastructure.
