Innovative RFID solution streamlines inventory programs for clothing donations, tracking and disbursement

Dress for Success South Central PA, a 501(c) 3 Charity organization, announced a project to improve product availability and client servicing using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) within its three stores, mobile unit and warehouse.  The inventory management system consists of state-of-the-art RFID solutions from Motorola, Avery Dennison and Concept2.

Ruth Koup, CEO and Founder of Dress for Success South Central PA said, Best practices used by retailers are a good model for our organization. Not much different than the private sector, we have financial responsibilities, tax requirements and guidelines for ensuring our transactions are transparent. By working with leading-edge solutions providers, Dress for Success can ensure compliance while improving operational efficiencies.

Dress for Success South Central PA selected Motorola, Avery Dennison and Concept2 based on their significant expertise in retail and RFID –having already teamed together on a number of the world’s most commercially significant item-level RFID deployments.  The comprehensive RFID solution includes Motorola’s MC9090-G RFID handheld readers and AN series RFID antennas, as well as best-in-class AD-224 RFID tags from Avery Dennison and Tracker Mobile software solution from Concept2 of Pittsburgh, Pa.

“Improving operations is very important for Dress for Success South Central PA, as we strive to improve the client experience and ensure inventory is where we need it, when we need it,” said Deborah Pekala, Board Member of Dress for Success South Central PA.  “In my work experience as DVP of Inventory Control and Retail Stock Ledger for The Bon Ton Stores Inc., I could see the value in RFID for Dress for Success South Central PA. The new RFID solution will reduce time spent on inventory duties and allow more time to be spent servicing clients.”

The project calls for all items to be tagged with an RFID tag as clothing and accessories are donated or as items are purchased for inventory.  The solution will enable Dress for Success South Central PA to track individual items within its locations and as they are distributed to clients. In addition to using RFID to expedite the processing of incoming donations, the organization will be able to use the Motorola RFID handheld readers to find inventory and quickly perform their annual physical counts.

“Motorola has a proven record of providing innovative and results-driven RFID solutions to retailers around the world that streamline operations and improve inventory and replenishment processes,” said Mike Poldino, vice president of RFID, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions.

The RFID solution is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2009 and will be used to track clothing and accessories within Dress for Success South Central PA locations.
