The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc.announced that Lowry Computer, a leading systems integrator and Motorola channel partner, has deployed its 802.11n wireless LAN (WLAN) solution at Memorial Medical Center (MMC) of Western Michigan, a community hospital located in Ludington, Mich.

Motorola’s innovative WLAN technology will enable end-to-end voice, video and data mobility across the entire healthcare facility, helping improve patient care, boost productivity and increase staff satisfaction. Patients and guests will also benefit from the new 802.11n wireless network by gaining high-speed Internet access, so they can stay connected while visiting the hospital.

“We have always looked to technology as a means of improving the standard of care and the patient experience that our Center offers,” said Daryl Crowley, director of information services, Memorial Medical Center of Western Michigan. “The new 802.11n Motorola wireless network will not only help us meet today’s application and security needs but, more importantly, will serve as the infrastructure backbone for future healthcare mobility applications like electronic medical records or medication administration.”

The new wireless network replaces the hospital’s legacy infrastructure providing clinicians, nurses and emergency room staff with the bandwidth and security features needed to leverage the latest mobile clinical applications and while offering a robust backbone for the development and implementation of future technologies. Featuring industry-leading Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) technology, the WLAN solution deployed at MMC protects the network against threats and unauthorized devices while providing performance monitoring and troubleshooting. This is critical for meeting HIPAA regulations and ensuring that unauthorized personnel do not gain access to patient records and other patient data. The network’s gap-free security features also ensure that the hospital’s patients and guests can leverage the same WLAN infrastructure for high-speed wireless Internet access.

The 802.11n solution at MMC leverages Motorola’s award-winning AP-7131 802.11a/b/g/n adaptive access points (APs) and RFS6000 wireless switches/controllers for high-bandwidth, reliable coverage. The tri-radio design of the AP-7131 provides excellent value, integrating a WIPS sensor for gap-free, 24×7 security while eliminating the need for multiple hardware purchases and extra cabling. The network is powered by Motorola’s Wireless Next Generation (Wi-NG) architecture, which offers a comprehensive feature set, including adaptive AP technology for unparalleled resiliency, real-time locationing system (RTLS) for real-time asset tracking, SMART RF management to dynamically address changes in the RF environment, and a wireless firewall for maximized Layer 2 and 3 protection.

“As more healthcare organizations look to wireless LAN as the primary infrastructure for delivering mobile applications, they should consider solutions that not only support their current bandwidth requirements but also future applications like video or voice-over-WLAN,” said Vivian Funkhouser, principal, Global Healthcare Solutions for Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. “Motorola’s 802.11n WLAN solutions offer healthcare customers the reliability and security required to deploy advanced mobility applications such as electronic medical records (EMR) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) that help improve staff productivity, employee satisfaction scores, and the patient experience.”

Motorola offers a comprehensive portfolio of indoor and outdoor infrastructure solutions designed to enable the truly wireless enterprise, regardless of the size of the business — from large enterprises with locations all over the world to branch offices and small businesses. Delivering Internet protocol (IP) coverage to virtually all spaces both indoors and outdoors, Motorola's innovative wireless enterprise portfolio includes fixed broadband, mesh, enterprise WLAN and Motorola AirDefense wireless security solutions. With time-proven resiliency, security and performance equal to or greater than that of a wired network, Motorola’s solutions substantially reduce network deployment and maintenance costs, and ensure the availability of cost-effective wireless connectivity in every corner of the enterprise. The result is the truly wireless enterprise — offering full mobility at a fraction of the cost of a traditional wired network.
