NEC Thailand Plans A Smart City For Advanced Healthcare

NEC Corporation (Thailand) and Chiang Mai Municipality have entered into a collaborative agreement aimed at developing smart city solutions and transforming Chiang Mai into a smart city. The initial focus will be on establishing a digital platform for the district’s healthcare system, particularly for healthcare facilities catering to elderly and chronically-ill patients. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) also includes exploring the potential use of other community applications centered around the concept of a “Smart Hospital.”

The primary objective of the platform is to provide comprehensive support to healthcare facilities in Chiang Mai. As part of the collaboration, NEC, in its capacity as the technology partner, will deploy Internet of Things (IoT) devices in these facilities during the first phase. Additionally, an application will be implemented to notify caregivers and patients’ relatives in the event of emergencies, such as falls or severe illness.

Moving on to the second phase, NEC will offer further assistance to caregivers through an application that enables remote health monitoring via cloud-based systems. This application will also empower patients to manage their appointments and medication requests, substantially reducing the workload of healthcare assistants. Furthermore, NEC will support Chiang Mai Municipality in facilitating Tele-Medicine services, allowing patients to receive diagnoses and consultations for minor illnesses or follow-up treatments from the convenience of their homes.

First Patients Treated in the US with the Worlds Smallest Heart Pump

First Patients Treated in the US with the Worlds Smallest Heart Pump

Magenta Medical, developer of the world’s smallest heart pump, announced the initiation of its FDA-approved Early Feasibility Study with the Elevateโ„ข percutaneous Left Ventricular Assist Device (pLVAD) for the high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (HR-PCI) indication. The study began with the treatment of two patients: one in Mount Sinai Health System and one in St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center, both in New York.

Patients with coronary artery disease are often referred to a catheterization procedure to open blockages in the arteries feeding the heart, with the goal of improving their quality-of-life and reducing the risk of heart attacks. Some of these patients present with more severe disease, making them prone to instability during coronary intervention, and are thus categorized as high-risk. In these patients, it is advantageous to provide mechanical circulatory support during the procedure to preserve systemic blood pressure and maintain perfusion of vital organs, including the heart itself. Since the duration of support for this indication is typically short (up to 6 hours), with patients ambulatory soon following the procedure, it is particularly important to limit the insertion profile of the device in order to minimize vascular access complications.

Having secured FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, Magenta Medical’s proprietary technology miniaturizes a powerful blood pump to fit an 8 Fr delivery system – the smallest crimping profile of any such device. The percutaneous Elevateโ„ข heart pump is inserted over a guidewire through commercially available 10 Fr introducer sheaths that require a small puncture in the groin. The flow of the pump is adjusted based on the clinical circumstances of the patient, up to 5 L/min of mean flow, making it the most powerful pump of its kind.

The Elevateโ„ข Early Feasibility Study was approved by the FDA to evaluate the safety and feasibility of the Elevateโ„ข system in providing temporary mechanical circulatory support during HR-PCI procedures, and constitutes the first step in a clinical program intended to secure approval for the device in the US for this indication.

The first patient was enrolled in the study by Dr. Samin Sharma, Director of Interventional Cardiology for the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. The patient underwent a high-risk procedure for severe three-vessel disease and received hemodynamic support by the Elevateโ„ข system throughout the procedure.

“I am delighted to be partnering with Magenta Medical on this study,” said Dr. Sharma. “The three cardinal features of the Elevateโ„ข pLVAD – small insertion profile, ease-of-use, and high pump flow – will enable us to benefit many more appropriately selected complex PCI patients, where current devices are limited due to larger insertion sizes.”

The second patient was enrolled in the study by Dr. Richard Shlofmitz, Chairman of Cardiology at St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center in New York. This patient also underwent a complex, meticulous PCI involving multiple vessels, resulting in a complete revascularization of the coronary tree. Robust hemodynamic support was provided throughout the procedure and weaning from the Elevateโ„ข system was successfully performed in the catheterization laboratory.

“As a recognized leader in cardiovascular research, St. Francis is thrilled to be a part of this study. We are excited about the prospects of the Elevateโ„ข system given the unique combination of simplicity, attractive insertion profile, and the full hemodynamic support the pump can provide,” said Dr. Shlofmitz. “In a busy practice such as ours that promotes clinical excellence with unwavering patient safety, the Elevateโ„ข system could have a significant impact on patient outcomes.”

“Magenta is proud to partner with top cardiology centers in the United States to further the validation of its technology and provide cardiologists with a powerful tool to support their high-risk patients during complex procedures,” said Dr. David Israeli, CEO of Magenta Medical. “We are looking forward to a speedy recruitment process and favorable study outcomes that would allow us to take the next step in the clinical program towards ultimate market approval.”

Elevateโ„ข is an investigational device, limited by Federal law to investigational use only. The technology received Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA for two indications: high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention and cardiogenic shock.

NEC Thailand and Chiang Mai Municipality trial digital health platform to support elderly and patient care in Chiang Mai

The system will support healthcare facilities in Chiang Mai that are housing the elderly and chronically-ill patients. The MoU will also explore the feasibility of utilizing other applications within the community under the โ€œSmart Hospitalโ€ theme.

Mr. Ichiro Kurihara, President, NEC Thailand, said, โ€œWe are delighted to expand on our earlier trial with a local nursing home in Chiang Mai to one that involves the municipality. Thailand needs to evolve its healthcare system to manage the effects of an ageing population, and we are glad to take the first step together with the local authorities to develop a digital health platform in three key phases for patients in Chiang Mai.โ€

As the appointed technology partner in the collaboration with Chiang Mai Municipality, NEC and participating healthcare providers will deploy IoT devices in the facilities in the collaboration for the first phase. They will also deploy an app that will notify caregivers and patientsโ€™ relatives in case of emergencies, such as a fall or when a patient feels extremely unwell.

In the second phase, NEC will further support caregivers with an application that allows for remote health monitoring through cloud-based systems. The application will also allow patients to manage their appointments and medication requests. This will have a huge improvement in reducing the workload of healthcare assistants.

Lastly, NEC will also support Chiang Mai Municipality in facilitating Tele-Medicine services by allowing patients to receive diagnoses and consultations on mild illnesses or follow-up treatments with doctors from the comforts of their home.

Mr. Kurihara added, โ€œThis partnership marks a significant milestone in NECโ€™s vision of creating sustainable societies empowered by technology. We have identified healthcare as a key focus area where Thailand needs significant improvements to manage the effects of an aging population. With the digital platform for Chiang Maiโ€™s healthcare system in phase one, we aim to enhance access to quality medical services and improve the overall well-being of residents. We are excited by this collaboration, and look forward to working closely with Chiang Mai Municipality to shape the future of Chiang Mai.โ€

FDA Clears CorNeat EverPatch, Worlds First Non-degradable, Synthetic Tissue Substitute for Ophthalmic Surgery

How Technologies Development Help Make Progress In Healthcare

CorNeat Vision’s EverPatch, a synthetic tissue substitute, has been granted 510(k) clearance by the US FDA. The CorNeat EverPatch is the first synthetic, non-degradable tissue-integrating matrix for use in ophthalmic surgeries. It is composed of a non-woven, polymer matrix which integrates with surrounding tissue and is intended to reinforce the sclera and aid the physical reconstruction of the ocular surface. This groundbreaking synthetic tissue substitute is designed to address the critical needs of ocular surgeons, providing a sterile and non-degradable solution for patients worldwide.

The CorNeat EverPatch is poised to displace the use of donor and processed tissue, commonly utilized in ocular surgeries but posing the risk of disease transmission.

Dr. Gilad Litvin, CorNeat Vision’s Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder stated: “The ideal graft material should be long-lasting, sterile, immunologically inactive, cosmetically acceptable, and readily available. The CorNeat EverPatch was designed with these goals in mind. Our novel ophthalmic patch is significantly thinner than processed patch tissue, provides better handling as it does not ‘cheesewire’ when sutured, and has holes that allow for accurate positioning and anchoring. These holes also facilitate direct conjunctival adhesion to the sclera thus supporting its bio-integration. Thus far, we have received extremely positive feedback from surgeons and are excited for U.S. surgeons to have this tool available.”

Almog Aley-Raz, CorNeat Vision’s CEO and VP R&D responded to the news: “We are extremely excited to introduce the CorNeat EverPatch to the U.S. market. It is the first device that leverages the EverMatrixโ„ข, our core tissue-integrating material platform technology, originally developed for our corneal prosthesis program. EverMatrixโ„ข presents a significant business opportunity as it is the only synthetic non-degradable patch material in ocular surgery. This biocompatible material has the potential for wider use in soft tissue reinforcement, biomechanical integration of implants with surrounding tissue, fabrication of membranes, and concealment of implants and sensors. I cannot overemphasize the potential impact of this technology on human health. This recent FDA clearance of our first device for ophthalmic use advances us toward our ultimate goal of promoting human health and equality.”

Aptamer Science begins lung cancer diagnosis kit non-reimbursement test at advanced hospitals

Scores Detected With Cancer Early Due To NHS Lung Screenings

Aptamer Science announced on the 9th that it has started a non-reimbursement test of the blood-based lung cancer diagnosis kit ‘AptoDetecttrun’ at a high-level hospital. It is explained that it is meaningful in that it has secured a foundation for new sales growth.

AptoDetecttrung was selected as a new medical technology subject to deferment of evaluation by the Ministry of Health and Welfare last year. Since then, Aptamer Science has developed a multi-center prospective clinical trial for health insurance registration and a code for non-reimbursement inspection at a tertiary general hospital.

About 3,000 patients with pulmonary nodules found in chest CT are recruiting subjects from about 10 tertiary university hospitals for the multicenter prospective clinical trial being conducted for the insurance listing process of Aptotitek Trung. The primary purpose is to verify the effectiveness of predicting the risk of lung nodules in an actual medical environment.

Aptamer Science is also focusing on marketing activities to secure non-reimbursement codes at tertiary general hospitals. An exhibition booth was set up at the spring conference of the Korean Lung Cancer Society, where professors of respiratory medicine who can prescribe the aptodetect test usually participate. In addition, until last May, the company started promotional activities through presentations and booth participation at major related conferences such as the Molecular Lung Cancer Research Group and the Targeted Therapy Research Group every month.

So far, Asan Medical Center and Kyunghee University Hospital have secured non-reimbursement codes. A number of tertiary hospitals and non-reimbursement codes are being secured. It is expected that full-fledged sales performance will be visible from the second half of this year in line with the application of real-life insurance.

An official from Aptamer Science said, “Aptamer Science is a health examination center with great potential and ripple effect based on references from tertiary general hospitals, and is striving to expand the market for AptoTitec Trung.” Once insurance is listed, the effect of increasing sales will be accelerated.โ€

“The market for lung cancer, which has the highest mortality rate, has recently been known to increase in non-smokers as well, and the market is expanding, but there is no proper in vitro diagnostic technology for early diagnosis,” he said. As blood-based multi-indicator diagnostic technology that can be used is attracting attention, interest in Aptotitectrung is high.โ€

Greiner Bio-One subsidiary Mediscan builds new sterilisation facility

Mediscan, a sterilisation service provider and subsidiary of Greiner Bio-One International GmbH, is starting construction of a new sterilisation plant at the existing Kremsmรผnster site. The new plant is planned with an investment volume of EUR 20 million and is to be completed by mid-2024. The future capacities will create the largest sterilisation location in Europe.

Kremsmรผnster, June 2023ย โ€“ Sterilisation service provider Mediscan, headquartered in Kremsmรผnster, is building another facility adjacent to the existing plant to sterilise medical products and food packaging and refine plastics and semiconductors. The new system is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2024. The investment volume of EUR 20 million includes the system technology, the new building with infrastructure, and an additional photovoltaic system.

State-of-the-art technology and expertise

The system technology used meets the latest standards. It has undergone further technological development compared with the previous model and once again combines two different treatment technologies in a single system. This means that individual product requirements can be met with the highest accuracy and quality.

โ€œThe sterilisation performance of Mediscan is an integral part of the production chain for many Greiner Bio-One products. We have a highly specialised and experienced team that ensures safe sterilisation to the highest standardsโ€.

Rainer Perneker, CEO of Greiner Bio-One International GmbH

Further capacity expansion necessary

Since the last site expansion in 2015, the production volumes of Greiner Bio-One and the demand for sterilisation services have continued to increase. The availability of sterilisation is essential for the adjacent parent company Greiner Bio-One because this represents the last step in the production chain. Mediscan treats the manufactured medical devices before they are delivered to customers worldwide.

โ€œWith the newly created capacities, Mediscan in Kremsmรผnster is developing into the largest sterilisation site in Europe. The expansion will also create further capacities in order to meet the demand of new third-party customersโ€.

Dr Markus Niederreiter, Managing Director Mediscan GmbH & Co KG

Installation of another photovoltaic system

Mediscan commissioned a photovoltaic system back in 2021. With the new plant, another photovoltaic system will be installed in order to cover part of the high energy demand in the sterilisation operation with solar energy. As a result, Greiner Bio-One is one step closer to its goal of increasing the proportion of self-generated electricity to 1.5% of electricity consumption by 2025.

Commitment to the Upper Austria site

Also in the field of sterilisation services, the international market environment is characterised by sharp price increases and limited availability. This makes it all the more important for Greiner Bio-One to ensure this service for its products and thus the supply of its customers. The investment-intensive expansion in close proximity to the Groupโ€™s largest production site was therefore a sensible step and a clear commitment to the Kremsmรผnster headquarters.

Why a Nursing Degree Can Help You Compliment Your Career?

The nursing profession represents a field that moves quickly and is in great need. For those who appreciate aiding others, the occupation has several advantages. There are benefits and drawbacks, just as in other professions. For instance, a career with a medical facility is not intended for fragile people. In the past few years, nurses have seen more terrible things than any of us could have anticipated.

Are you thinking about pursuing the nursing field? There is a dire need for nurses now compared to ever. COVID-19 has severely affected the nursing profession, and there is currently a scarcity everywhere. But one of the most gratifying professions is nursing, which also provides a solid foundation for what lies ahead. Here are 3 reasons why pursuing a profession in nursing would improve your quality of life.

1. Flexible work schedule

Schedules and duration are frequently variable for nurses. For parents and guardians, this may offer a further advantage. With respect to the business, a registered nurse may have the choice of 8 to 10 or twelve-hour working hours. So, get a good online nursing degree today! The number of weekly hours decreases if you perform 10 or 12-hour shifts.

Additionally, nurses may take side hustles for different types of employers.

  • School nurses frequently take a two-month holiday every summer, which fits the academic calendar.
  • Traveling nurses can choose which duties to perform depending on the location and the shifts available.
  • In-home nurses typically only work certain weekends alongside regular working hours.
  • Nurses in local hospitals work during normal business hours on weekdays.

2. Your medical understanding is vital outside of work

Everybody wants to be safe and secure, but occasionally mishaps happen. And once that occurs, it’s preferable to be ready. Understanding that you can administer medical treatment in a crisis as a nurse will give you peace of mind no matter what takes place outside of work. Just consider:

  • How many individuals are prepared to respond when someone passes out?
  • How many individuals have the desired skills to conduct CPR in a crisis situation?
  • How many of them are familiar with what measure to take if they are having a breathing disorder?

3. Fantastic salary, security, and amenities

The requirement for nurses is constant. By 2030, the field is projected to expand by 9%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS). There are numerous job chances due to the nursing staffing shortage that many counties are currently facing. Nursing positions in healthcare organizations are in high demand; some even provide sizable incentives for joining qualified nurses.

A fair wage is also given to nurses. BLS surveyed that, in the United States of America, nurses make an average yearly pay of $80,010, which is more than the median yearly earnings for all occupations.

Do you wish to assist others in recovering from sickness and other disorders and give them the essential first aid they require? Earning a degree in nursing will improve your reputation, earnings, and quality of lifestyle.

Does Medicare Cover Eyeglasses and Contacts?

Understanding the Ins and Outs of Medicare Coverage for Eyeglasses and Contacts

When it comes to ensuring the wellness of our eyes, understanding our healthcare coverage becomes paramount. It’s often said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. They’re also critical to our overall health and well-being, offering a unique insight into our systemic health. Our vision needs often increase as we age, making reliable access to eyewear, such as glasses or contacts, crucial. In the United States, many seniors rely on Medicare for their health coverage. So, how does this prominent insurance program interact with the needs of our eyes?

Unraveling Medicare: Understanding Its Parts and Their Purposes

At a high level, Medicare is designed with a four-part structure to cater to various healthcare needs. These parts, labeled A, B, C, and D, cover different healthcare areas. Part A, also known as Hospital Insurance, primarily covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and in some cases, home health care. As you might expect, these services are crucial for individuals who need significant and often immediate medical attention, like surgery or treatment for a severe illness.

Part B, or Medical Insurance, covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. It plays a critical role in maintaining health by covering routine visits to the doctor, preventive screenings, and necessary medical supplies.

Next is Part C, often referred to as Medicare Advantage. This alternative to the original Medicare plan provides another way to receive the benefits of Parts A and B. These plans are offered by private companies that contract with Medicare, and they usually include benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like vision, dental, and hearing care.

Finally, Part D adds prescription drug coverage to the original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. This coverage helps individuals afford necessary medications.

Assessing Vision Services in the Scope of Original Medicare

Diving into the specifics, Original Medicare, which encompasses Parts A and B, offers relatively limited coverage regarding vision services. This is a critical piece of understanding for those needing routine vision care, as eyeglasses, contact lenses, and routine eye exams are generally not covered under this program.

While it may seem surprising, there are certain circumstances under which Original Medicare will provide coverage for eyewear. For instance, if a beneficiary has had a cataract surgery that includes the implantation of an intraocular lens, Medicare Part B will provide coverage for one pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses following the surgery.

Discovering the Extended Benefits of Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are often suitable for those looking for more extensive vision coverage. These plans, offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare, are designed to cover all services provided by Original Medicare with the exception of hospice care, which remains covered under Part A.

A key aspect of Medicare Advantage plans is that they often come with additional benefits not found in Original Medicare. Among these additional benefits is coverage for vision care. This typically includes routine eye exams and often an eyewear allowance. This allowance can be used towards the purchase of eyeglasses or contact lenses. The specifics of coverage can vary significantly among different Medicare Advantage plans, so it’s important to review the details of a plan before signing up.

Exploring Additional Plans and Considerations for Vision Coverage

Even with the extended benefits of Medicare Advantage, some individuals may find that their specific vision needs require more coverage. Additional options like Medigap, Medicare Supplement Insurance, and standalone vision insurance plans exist for those individuals.

Medigap policies help pay for some health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. But note that Medigap policies generally do not cover long-term care, vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing.

For those with more specific or extensive vision needs, looking into separate vision insurance plans might be necessary. These plans typically offer coverage for routine eye exams and often provide eyeglasses or contact lens benefits.

Securing Your Vision Needs: Navigating Medicare and Beyond

Understanding your vision needs and the coverage provided by your insurance plan is critical to maintaining your overall health. While Original Medicare offers limited coverage for eyewear, you can explore options such as Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and standalone vision insurance plans for more extensive coverage. By researching and understanding these different options, you can ensure that your vision needs are adequately covered.

Your eye health is a crucial part of your overall well-being. Therefore, it is essential to stay proactive about understanding what type of coverage you need and how to obtain it best. Ensuring your insurance aligns with your vision needs can help you avoid unnecessary costs and optimize your health. Navigating these insurance waters can be complex, so feel free to ask for help or clarification. Remember, you deserve clear sight and peace of mind when it comes to your healthcare.

Understanding Medicare’s approach to covering eyewear, including eyeglasses and contact lenses, is crucial for those enrolled in the program. While Original Medicare’s coverage for vision needs may be limited, options such as Medicare Advantage or standalone vision insurance plans can help ensure your specific requirements are met. Proactively understanding your unique needs and exploring the right coverage options is key to safeguarding your vision health. After all, your overall well-being is significantly influenced by your vision health, making it vital to make informed decisions about your Medicare plan and any supplemental coverage you may need.
