NHS deploy drones to deliver Covid-19 kit between hospitals

NHS deploy drones to deliver Covid-19 kit between hospitals

A National Health Service (NHS) drone is being deployed to transport Covid-19 samples, blood tests and PPEs between Essex hospitals in England, reports theguardian.com. The trials, supported by a UKP1.3m grant from the UK Space Agency, aims to establish a network of air corridors for drones to navigate using GPS.

The project is to be based at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, part of the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and will be supported by the local Anglia Ruskin University as the academic partner. The hospital stands on a WW1 Royal Flying Corps airfield.

The autonomous drone, will be operated by either an ex-military fast jet or helicopter instructor and initially fly between Essexโ€™s Broomfield hospital, Basildon hospital and the Pathology First laboratory in Basildon.

The project is the idea of Apian, a healthcare drone start-up founded by Christopher Law and Hammad Jeilani. Both are trainee doctors at the Barts and The London as well as being Mid and South Essex NHS innovation fellows.

Law explains, โ€œCovid-19 has highlighted challenges in NHS supply chain logistics. There has never been a better time to create a faster, more dependable and environmentally friendly method of transporting medical supplies.โ€

He continues, โ€œWe are confident that by setting up a medical drone delivery service, weโ€™ll be able to fly samples to labs more regularly, reliably and quickly, helping improve patient health outcomes.โ€ The aim is to reduce waiting times for couriers, free up NHS staff, reduce unnecessary physical contact, and minimise the risk of secondary transmission of the virus.

Apian is installing drone pad infrastructure, so its craft can take off from and land at hospitals, laboratories and warehouses.

Hammad Jeilani and Christopher Law with their Apian drones being trialled for Covid-19 logistics in Essex.

The drone can fly up to 300ft above the ground and withstand harsh weather conditions. The flight path from Broomfield Hospital to the Pathology First Lab is 22km and takes just under 17 minutes. The flight path from Basildon Hospital to Pathology First is 11.5km and takes just over nine minutes. This is the latest example of the drone industry assisting the world fight against Covid-19.

The company will scale the work from its drone trials by creating the UKโ€™s NHS Air Grid (NAG), a network of secure air corridors designed to safely, rapidly and effectively enable drone delivery across the NHS. It is working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority, UK Space Agency and the emergency services to create these corridors.

UK Government adviser, Sir John Bell, a regius professor of medicine at the University of Oxford, said the trial will face significant logistical challenges.

He told BBC Radio 4โ€™s Today programme, โ€œThe problem is, how do you get the swabs out of peopleโ€™s mouths to the centres, the big labs, how do you get them out of the packaging, how do you get them into the workflow and how do you capture the data at the end?โ€ He continued, โ€œAs always, itโ€™s not the bit in the middle, itโ€™s the front end and the back end thatโ€™s really the limiting factor and [thatโ€™s what] people are working on โ€“ the logistics.โ€

The healthcare drone company is one of three new projects using space-enabled technologies and services to support the on-going battle against Covid-19. The UK Space Agency is also backing DriverNet, a mobile app that will use satellite technology to provide access to more affordable community transport for people wishing to go to and from Covid care providers, and those looking to participate in community sport.

By using artificial intelligence to batch patients by their geolocation, their mobile phone location triangulated by satellites, and encouraging transport sharing, costs and miles could be cut by half. It is thought this could also help reduce the 15 million missed NHS appointments each year.

Also receiving funding is the delivery of a remote platform for Earth observation learning. The collaboration, led by the University of Edinburgh, builds on the Earth Blox cloud-based software for harnessing planetary-scale satellite intelligence. It will provide distance-learning support to students who would have been studying Earth observation science.

Earth observation courses involve frequently being in a laboratory and completing practical exercises, and the funding will help make this possible from home. The three projects, which will share UKP1.3 million of funding, have been selected as part of a joint initiative between the UK Space Agency and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Science minister Amanda Solloway said: โ€œThe efforts of the UKโ€™s space sector to support our incredible NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic have been truly inspirational. The projects we are backing today are fantastic examples of how our leading space scientists are supporting those directly on the front line to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.โ€

In May, a drone trial was set-up to fly vital medical supplies four times a day to the Isle of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides. Meanwhile, Solent Transport, Southampton University and Windracers embarked on another trial to fly medical supplies to the Isle of Wightโ€™s St Maryโ€™s hospital on the island with a drone while ferry services were curtailed in April.

Qualities to Look for in a General Practitioner

Qualities to Look for in a General Practitioner

While no one wants to go to the doctor, we realize that it is something that has to be done every now and then in order to stay healthy. If you donโ€™t have a doctor, it is recommended that you find one and become a patient with them. Should you just settle for the first doctor you find? While all doctors will be medically certified, some will be better for you than others. Here are some qualities to look for in a general practitioner.

A Warm Personality

One of the most important things to look for in a GP is how comfortable you are around them. Why does this matter? Doctors will be performing physicals on you and will, at times, be dealing with intimate areas of your body. If you are uncomfortable with them, this will be a challenging thing to do. The experts at https://www.broadgategp.co.uk/ recommended going around to several doctors and setting up a meeting with them. This will give you an idea about their personality and how they will act.

If you are uncomfortable around one of them, then it is recommended that you do not choose them as your GP. You will know you have found the right GP when you are able to feel comfortable around them even when you are put in awkward situations. Always look for a GP with a warm personality that you feel comfortable around.

Looking Out for Patient Wellbeing

While it might sound strange, you want to find a GP that is genuinely looking out for you and your well-being. Some GPs will just prescribe drugs whenever there is an issue and send you right out of the office. However, the problem with the medication is that it can have plenty of side effects, and it might not even be the right drug for what you are dealing with.

A good GP is one that takes time to diagnose the patient and waits to see what is happening before prescribing anything. While you want to make sure your GP is not afraid to give you medication, you donโ€™t want someone who will give things out on a whim. A GP who takes the time to get a full diagnosis before coming up with a treatment plan and prescribing medication is a GP that you will want.

Medical Specialties

While all GPs are equipped to handle standard medical procedures, you might have a health condition that requires further insight. Generally, a GP will specialize in several areas and will be able to assist you in those far better than a standard GP. It is important to look for something like this, as you will most likely be seeing them often to deal with these kinds of issues. Find a doctor that can look out for your needs and can do it better than others in the area.

Understanding

You want to find a doctor who will understand the situations you are going through and the problems you are having. We donโ€™t mean to use your doctor as a therapist, but someone who can connect and understand the medical issues you are having on a more personal level. Look for a GP who understands what you are saying about your body and your health and then acts upon it. No one knows your body better than yourself, and a good GP will understand that if you are offering any advice, it is something that should be considered.

Honesty

Honesty within the medical field is a double-edged sword. While GPs have to be honest with their patients, being too honest can bring grief and strife. At the end of the day, wouldnโ€™t you want to know everything that is going on, though? A good GP is someone who is able to have a difficult conversation with you regarding health and will then work on follow up steps to prevent things from getting worse. Studies have shown that 1 in 10 GPs has admitted to lying to their patients to avoid causing any problems. Find someone who is not afraid to do the right thing, even if it is extremely difficult.

These are all qualities that you should look for in a GP. It can be tough to find someone you are comfortable with, but you will eventually find one if you keep looking. While we do want to avoid the doctorโ€™s office, we must understand that there will be a time when we have to go there to get treatment. Ensure that you are with the right GP so that visits will be as painless as possible.

Radioimmunotherapy Market Revenue Analysis with Emerging Trends & Opportunity

Radioimmunotherapy Market Revenue Analysis with Emerging Trends & Opportunity

Emerging clinical pipeline of radioimmunotherapy looks promising and will create opportunities for the market. Radioimmunotherapy is the combination of radiation therapy and immunotherapy. In this, a monoclonal antibody (mAb) is paired with a radiotracer (radioactive material). When injected, radio labeled antibody binds to the specific cancer cell which is destroyed by its radioactivity. Enhanced tumor recognition and immune cell targeting is the one of the key benefits of this therapy.

Also, as the radiation is localized to the tumour site, risk of damage to the surrounding healthy tissue is reduced. Increasing prevalence of cancer and its mutation forms, adverse events with radiation therapy, need for targeted therapy, and high immunospecificity through monoclonal antibodies are the key drivers of this market.

Key Findings:

Magnolia Medical Launches New Steripath Micro Initial Specimen Diversion Device

Magnolia Medical Launches New Steripath Micro Initial Specimen Diversion Device

Magnolia Medical Technologies, Inc. โ€“ the trusted solution for reducing blood culture contamination announced the launch of its new Steripathยฎ Micro Initial Specimen Diversion Deviceยฎ. Micro is the first FDA 510(k)-cleared device indicated to reduce blood culture contamination,1 designed to be used with the most vulnerable patient populations.

Working closely with leading hospitals throughout the country, Magnolia developed the new lightweight, lower diversion volume, easy-to-use Steripath Micro with syringe-driven diversion and collection. The new device leverages the trusted ISDDยฎtechnology while diverting less than 1.0 mL of blood, engineered for patients with low-blood volume and difficult venous access.

โ€œWe are pleased to introduce the Steripath Micro platform as an integral part of our expanding ISDD portfolio designed for use with our most precious patient populations,โ€ said Greg Bullington, CEO of Magnolia Medical. โ€œThis new product introduction has broadened the Steripath portfolio, enabling us to address the wide variety of use cases associated with blood culture collection. We are committed to establishing the new standard of care for sepsis testing accuracy for all patient populations with a focus on preventing patient harm by reducing false-positive diagnostic test results.โ€

Specifically, the Steripath Micro architecture uses syringe-driven negative pressure to divert and sequester the initial 0.6 to 0.9 mL of blood. Once diversion is complete the user simply presses a button to isolate the diverted blood and automatically a second independent blood flow pathway opens to collect the blood specimen for culture into the syringe.

The patented Steripathยฎ ISDDยฎ product portfolio, including the Steripath Gen2 direct-to-media and syringe configurations in addition to Steripath Micro, are the only FDA 510(k)-cleared devices indicated to reduce blood culture contamination.1

Prescryptive Health and Bartell Drugs Partner to Expand Access to Reliable, Safe and Secure COVID-19 Testing

BioAffinity Technologies, a privately held biotech company, and Smiths Medical, a leading global medical device manufacturer, announced a partnership to improve patient care with at-home collection of sputum to be analyzed by CyPathยฎ Lung, a non-invasive flow cytometry diagnostic test for lung cancer that is being developed as a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT) by Precision Pathology Services.

โ€œThe partnership enables the use of the acapellaยฎ vibratory PEP therapy system made by Smiths Medical for at-home collection of samples that are analyzed by bioAffinityโ€™s CyPathยฎ Lung, a patient-friendly test shown to have high sensitivity and specificity in detecting lung cancer in people at high risk for the disease,โ€ said bioAffinity Technologies President and CEO Maria Zannes. โ€œOne of the hallmarks of CyPathยฎ Lung is the ease by which patients collect their sputum samples at home using the acapellaยฎ device.โ€

โ€œInnovation is a cornerstone of Smiths Medical. As a leader in airway management solutions, we are proud that our acapellaยฎ device can facilitate the use of this non-invasive breakthrough test that can detect lung cancer at its earliest stages when treatment can be most effective and lives can be saved,โ€ said JehanZeb Noor, Chief Executive Officer, Smiths Medical. โ€œSmiths Medical and bioAffinity Technologies share a commitment to putting patients first and making quality healthcare accessible and affordable.โ€

CyPathยฎ Lung is a flow cytometric test to aid in the diagnosis of lung cancer. Patients collect sputum samples non-invasively at home using the acapellaยฎ device. The sample is shipped overnight to the laboratory for processing. Sample data is acquired by flow cytometry, a technique that can count, sort and profile individual cells quickly. Using an automated analysis with pre-set parameters, CyPathยฎ Lung profiles the lung micro-environment including the presence of cancer-associated cells. Test results can be provided to the physician in minutes.

A test validation trial conducted by bioAffinity Technologies comparing people at high risk for lung cancer to high-risk patients with the disease resulted in CyPathยฎ Lung specificity of 88% and sensitivity of 82%, similar to far more invasive procedures currently used to diagnose lung cancer. CyPathยฎ Lung performed even better, with 92% sensitivity and 87% specificity, in the group of cancer and cancer-free high-risk participants who had no nodules or small nodules less than 2 cm in diameter. Results of the test validation trial have been submitted for presentation at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) 2020 World Conference on Lung Cancer.

Precision Pathology Services has licensed and is developing CyPathยฎ Lung as a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT) in accordance with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) guidelines and regulations. Precision Pathology Services is an accredited CAP/CLIA laboratory in San Antonio, Texas. Following completion of development of CyPathยฎ Lung as an LDT, physicians may order the test for their patients who are smokers and former smokers at high risk for lung cancer and who receive a positive screening result or otherwise are suspected of having the disease.

People who have smoked the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or more, have not quit smoking in the past 15 years and are 55-80 years of age are recommended for annual screening by low dose computed tomography (LDCT). Screening by LDCT has been proven to detect lung cancer at earlier stages when it can be successfully treated, but screening has a low Positive Predictive Value (PPV) that can lead to unnecessary and risky procedures.
