Advanced Radiology Partners with eInformatics to Create a Safer Patient Experience

Advanced Radiology Partners with eInformatics to Create a Safer Patient Experience

Advanced Radiology has collaborated with eInformatics to implement the software provider’s Wait In Car application across their Connecticut imaging sites. The application allows the diagnostic imaging group to manage patient flow and provide the safest possible exam experience for patients and clinical staff.

“Our first priority has always been the health and safety of our patients,” said Clark Yoder, Advanced Radiology Consultants’ CEO. “The Wait In Car application empowers us to help prevent the spread of the virus, while providing a safer, less stressful environment for our patients and our staff.” In addition to the new technology, Advanced Radiology has implemented comprehensive safety policies, including use of protective equipment, regular disinfection of all equipment, and pre-screening of patients, at each of their clinical sites. “It is important to keep in mind that we are all facing this challenge together,” said Mr. Yoder.

Tim Ninke, who led the development for eInformatics, says the new app alleviates crowded waiting rooms and public clusters of patients found in many areas of the country. “It is our hope the new app contributes to a safer and more productive practice-patient experience at this critical time. This really is what Wait in Car is all about.”

On the day of their scheduled appointment, patients automatically receive a text message that contains a link they can use to alert the facility upon their arrival and to complete check-in while they wait in their car; including COVID-19 screening questions. Inside the clinical site, Advanced Radiology staff can review and track patient information in real-time as it is fed into their clinical information system. Once the patient successfully completes the screening questions and is ready to be received, the staff sends a follow-up text inviting the patient into the facility for their appointment.

Challenges Therapists Face Amid Coronavirus Scare

Challenges Therapists Face Amid Coronavirus Scare

From the public market in Wuhan, China, the coronavirus has reached the soils of Canada. There is still uncertainty about when the disease will stop infecting people. The government has come up with strict measures to limit the spread of the disease, and health experts are recommending limited in-person consultations except for those who need medical care because they are having trouble breathing or other serious health concerns.

Challenges Therapists Face

Social distancing rules present a challenge for therapists who have to take care of their patients. Continuing therapy is a necessity for patients to ensure that they retain and maintain their functionality. Missing out on their therapies can lead to a reversal and even a decline in the established improvements that the patient has made. A physiotherapist in Calgary is now concerned about how they will be able to provide ongoing care for their patients. Prolonged self-isolation and community quarantine procedures can only weaken their patients due to the lack of physical activity.

Patients themselves are scared to go out. Most do not want to risk contracting the disease, especially those that have comorbidities.

The Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) already released a statement on how physiotherapists should act to protect themselves and their patients to ensure that they do not become vectors of disease transmission. The CPA outlined the steps they must take to ensure that physiotherapists and their team are safe from COVID-19, such as proper hand washing, the practice of social distancing, and cough etiquette.

Similarly, the College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia (CPTBC) has released a statement (PDF) and regulations about the disease. It included advice on self-monitoring for signs and symptoms of coronavirus and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when providing patient care. The College also advocated self-isolation when physical therapists are not on duty.

All these precautions are in place for the time being while COVID-19 is still wreaking havoc. Based on the data presented by Observable, Canada has a doubling rate of every three days, meaning it could even get worse. While there is looming uncertainty about the disease progression, therapists are concerned about what the consequences will be if the government imposes a total lockdown.

Providing Remote Physical Therapy Sessions

During times like this, the use of technology is crucial to help healthcare workers deliver the care that their patients need. In the U.S., a physical therapist has turned to online video sessions to provide proper care for his patients. With video sessions, he gets the assurance that his clients are doing the exercises correctly rather than sending them a written home program. It also allows him to ensure that the client is actually doing the procedures while they are at home.

Similarly, a company in the U.S. is also promoting the use of telerehabilitation programs. The remote program, which was launched in 2019, is now providing a convenient alternative for patients who may find it challenging to undergo in-person therapies. And with the pandemic scare, it is useful now more than ever. However, while these practices can all positively impact physical and physiotherapy patients, there is still a need for them to go and visit their providers once our scientists, healthcare workers, and researchers defeat the highly infectious COVID-19.

For now, what people must do is to listen to the directives of the government, practice social distancing, maintain proper hygiene, and stay healthy. Patients with no severe illnesses should allow their doctors to divert their attention and care to those who most need it. With cooperation and proper hygiene, we can defeat this disease and go back to our routine.

Current Health partners with the Mayo Clinic for remote coronavirus patient monitoring

Current Health, which offers a suite of AI-powered remote patient monitoring solutions, announced a partnership with the Mayo Clinic to develop technologies that identify coronavirus cases and predict symptom and disease severity in patients, health care workers, and other at-risk individuals. As part of the partnership, the Mayo Clinic will become an investor in Current Health.

In light of recent U.S. FDA guidance to expand the use of remote monitoring devices that facilitate patient management, hospitals and health systems are piloting AI-enabled solutions that promise to minimize health workers’ exposure while improving health outcomes. They could also allow clinicians and practitioners to triage less severely affected patients by monitoring them in their own homes.

Current Health’s collaboration with the Mayo Clinic — which follows a similar rollout at Baptist Health in Kentucky earlier this month — will likely involve the use of wearables to collect real-world, continuous data like temperature, heart rate, oxygen saturation, activity, and posture from a subset of vulnerable patients. Health care professionals from both the Mayo Clinic and Current Health will be able to access this data to make diagnostic and treatment decisions, at least in part by investigating novel biomarkers and the ways in which they manifest in diverse populations.

Current Health’s existing patient database, which includes anonymized vital sign data and raw physiological sensor data from hundreds of patients infected with coronavirus and thousands of uninfected patients, will be made available to the aforementioned professionals, as well as algorithms developed by the Mayo Clinic. “If we are successful in accomplishing our goals, we believe we will improve how patients with COVID-19 are identified, monitored, managed, and ultimately help with their recovery,” wrote Mayo Clinic infectious disease specialist Dr. Abinash Virk.

Molina Healthcare to Acquire Magellan Complete Care

Molina Healthcare to Acquire Magellan Complete Care

Molina Healthcare, Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Magellan Complete Care line of business of Magellan Health, Inc. The purchase price for the transaction is approximately $820 million, net of certain tax benefits. Molina intends to fund the purchase with cash on hand.

Magellan Complete Care is a managed care organization serving members in six states including Arizona and statewide in Virginia. Through its Senior Whole Health branded plans, MCC provides fully integrated plans for Medicaid and Medicare dual beneficiaries in Massachusetts, as well as Managed Long Term Care in New York. As of December 31, 2019, MCC served approximately 155,000 members, with full year 2019 revenues greater than $2.7 billion.

With the addition of MCC, Molina will serve more than 3.6 million members in government-sponsored healthcare programs in 18 states and will have 2020 pro-forma projected revenue of over $20 billion.

Molina believes that the acquisition of the MCC assets represents a strong strategic fit with its portfolio of core Medicaid, high-acuity, and duals businesses. It also creates new markets for growth opportunities in Medicare and Marketplace in an expanded Medicaid footprint. Finally, the addition of MLTSS lives will further strengthen Molina’s leadership and geographic breadth in the important MLTSS growth area.

“Acquiring MCC expands our geographic footprint in our core businesses of managed Medicaid, dual eligibles, and long-term services and supports,” said Joe Zubretsky, president and chief executive officer of Molina. “We believe it will allow us to scale our enterprise-wide platforms and benefit from both operating and fixed cost leverage. The acquisition plays to our strengths where our demonstrated operating capabilities put us in a unique position to improve the business’s margins,” Mr. Zubretsky continued. “We will also intensely focus on maintaining the continuity of care for MCC’s members and stability for its state partners. These considerations have added importance in this current and challenging environment.”

About Molina Healthcare

Molina Healthcare, Inc., a FORTUNE 500 company, provides managed health care services under the Medicaid and Medicare programs and through the state insurance marketplaces. Through its locally operated health plans, Molina Healthcare served approximately 3.4 million members as of March 31, 2020.

Husco-Led Consortium Develops Breakthrough Face Mask for Frontline Healthcare Professionals

Husco-Led Consortium Develops Breakthrough Face Mask for Frontline Healthcare Professionals

Husco, a privately-held company specializing in high performance hydraulic and electro-mechanical components, announced that a consortium called MaskForce has designed, developed, and produced a reusable face mask. This face mask is temporarily authorized by the FDA under an emergency use authorization for use by healthcare professionals to help prevent the spread of infection or illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial production run of 30,000 face masks is underway at Husco’s headquarters in Waukesha, Wis., with the first shipment to Milwaukee-area first responders sent on April 29. The consortium is working on plans to ramp up production to more than 10,000 masks per day to help meet national demand.

Unlike most face masks which are designed to be discarded after a single use, the MaskForce product can be sanitized and re-used. Made of medical grade silicone and polypropylene, the final design is soft, comfortable, and provides a low pressure facial seal. The MaskForce team tested hundreds of suitable materials and collaborated with multiple university labs, medical professionals and first responders before finalizing the production design.

“Among our core values is practical innovation, which drives us to consistently and creatively push the boundary of what is possible to create immediate value,” said Austin Ramirez, chief executive officer of Husco, which is leading the MaskForce consortium. “MaskForce is both an example of American manufacturing ingenuity and the good that can be accomplished when multiple stakeholders collaborate to serve the community. I am grateful to all the MaskForce collaborators for their time, expertise, and goodwill.”

The MaskForce consortium began when more than 50 professionals representing local manufacturers, first responders, educational institutions, and healthcare organizations gathered together with the shared goal of developing a reusable face mask to help address the nationwide health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Briggs & Stratton Corporation, Midwest Composite Technologies, MasterGraphics, New Berlin Plastics, Protolabs, and Savage Solutions all provided key services and support to the consortium. Through the guidance and input of these organizations and others, the goal was achieved in just four weeks.

“Among our core collaborators, no one blinked an eye when it came to using our collective expertise during this time of need,” said Austin Schmitt, vice president at Husco. “From the start, we endeavored to create something better, with the necessary comfort, fit, and functionality needed, supported by a high-volume production process to get the masks into the hands of first responders as quickly as possible. MaskForce accomplished in four weeks what would typically take months or even years.”

The mask is priced close to cost, with any profits in 2020 reinvested back into the community. In addition to accelerating production of the current model, a smaller form-factor mask is under development. The MaskForce face mask is temporarily authorized pursuant to an FDA emergency use authorization and is actively pursuing NIOSH N95 certification.

FDA Grants Hardy Diagnostics Emergency UseAuthorization for a Rapid Antibody Test Kitfor COVID-19

FDA Grants Hardy Diagnostics Emergency UseAuthorization for a Rapid Antibody Test Kitfor COVID-19

Hardy Diagnostics, a medical device manufacturer based inSanta Maria, California, announced FDA EUA approval on April24 for a new in vitro diagnostic medical device: Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Test (Cat. No. RTA0203).

This immunoassay is intended for qualitative detection and differentiation of IgM and IgG antibodiesto SARS-CoV-2 in human plasma or serum. This test was developed by Autobio Diagnostics Co., Ltd(603658, Shanghai), a publicly-traded, major microbiology medical device manufacturer, based inZhengzhou, China. Through this partnership, Hardy Diagnostics and Autobio have begun to opensupply chains to exclusively deliver this rapid test to the United States. This rapid market deploymentof a new in vitro diagnostic medical device was made possible through the FDA Emergency UseAuthorization (EUA) program. This program is used in times of crisis, such as the current COVID-19pandemic.

IgM antibodies are generated initially by the body as a result of infection at about the time symptomsappear. IgM antibodies will dissipate within approximately one month. IgG antibodies are generatedby the body about one week after symptoms appear and last for an extended amount of time.By using a patient’s serum or plasma specimen, the Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Test offers a turnaroundtime of only 15 minutes. This simple to use test requires no equipment or special expertise or trainingto implement.“We are incredibly proud of the work our partners in China have accomplished,” said Andre Hsiung,Director of Technical Services at Hardy Diagnostics.

“Because Autobio quickly developed thistechnology and because the FDA allowed Emergency Use Authorization, we will be able to moreeffectively leverage our sales network to get this product out to where it is needed the most.”The Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Test is a lateral flow immunoassay intended for the qualitative detectionand differentiation of IgM and IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in human plasma from anticoagulate blood (Heparin/ EDTA/ sodium citrate) or serum from individuals with signs and symptoms ofinfection who are suspected of COVID-19 infection. The Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Test is also intendedfor use as an aid in identifying individuals with an adaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2,indicating recent or prior infection.Testing is limited to laboratories certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of1988 (CLIA), 42 U.S.C 263a, to perform moderate or high complexity tests.

The Anti-SARS-CoV-2 RapidTest is intended for use by clinical laboratory personnel specifically instructed and trained in thetechniques of in vitro diagnostic procedures.Negative results do not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in those who have been in recentcontact with the virus, due to the lag time between exposure and the patient’s antibody response.

This test should not be used as the sole basis for patient management decisions. Test results must becombined with clinical observations, patient history, and epidemiological information.Follow-up testing with a molecular diagnostic test should be considered to confirm the infectionstatus. This test is not intended for the screening of donated blood. This test will be useful in identifying asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic carriers of the SARS-CoV-2virus. It will also be helpful in identifying persons who were infected by the virus previously, but maynot have been properly diagnosed.Studies suggest that antibody testing for COVID-19 may provide useful information in managing theinfected patient, making determinations as to immune status, and preventing the future spreading ofthe disease.

Harley Street Medical Area provides vital support to NHS during pandemic

Harley Street Medical Area provides vital support to NHS during pandemic

Hospitals and clinics across London’s Harley Street Medical Area (HSMA) are collaborating with the NHS to meet the continued need for specialist treatments which are being put under pressure while the fight against the COVID-19 virus continues.

King Edward VII’s Hospital took less than 48 hours to respond to the call from the NHS, turning over all resources in the fight against the virus and admitting their first NHS patients on March 23rd. Since starting their NHS programme three weeks ago, the independent, charitable hospital has treated 218 time-critical NHS cancer patients, freeing up invaluable capacity at this unprecedented time. The hospital has redeployed equipment as required and has put forward a number of volunteers to be seconded to the newly built NHS Nightingale Hospital in London.

Chief Executive Lindsey Condron said: “We are deeply committed and proud to be able to provide our support to the NHS in the fight against COVID-19. We have dedicated our wards, theatres, equipment and staff indefinitely during this national crisis, and we will continue to serve in any way we can.”

The London Clinic is providing full access to its hospital campus, which includes a 13-bed level 4 advanced intensive care unit, pioneering cancer care unit, 10 theatres, and more than 230 beds. The hospital’s healthcare team, including around 450 expert nurses and 900 leading consultants, will provide care 24/7 for as long as they are needed. Many staff from The London Clinic volunteered to work at NHS Nightingale – with 22 specialists being selected by the NHS. The hospital is also loaning vital lifesaving equipment including six ventilators and 12 pump and syringe machines, amongst other equipment.

Al Russell, The London Clinic’s Chief Executive, said: “We face an unprecedented situation, one that becomes more challenging and complex as each day passes. Our colleagues in the NHS are working tirelessly, day-and-night, to support everyone impacted in extreme circumstances.

“The independent sector is stepping up to support, and The London Clinic, as one of the UK’s largest independent hospitals as well as a charity, is no different. We are determined to support this effort with all the energy and capability we can muster.”

Another major Harley Street healthcare group, HCA Healthcare UK, is also providing care to NHS patients whose care and clinical needs are considered time critical. It has made its full capacity of 837 beds, 38 theatres and over 1600 registered nurse and theatre employees, available to support the NHS. The healthcare group have also provided 22 ventilators to the NHS, and also called for volunteers to work at newly formed NHS Nightingale Hospital.

The Schoen Clinic– a private hospital specialising in spine and orthopaedics – has contributed life-saving equipment including ventilators and PPE, and staff directly to the front lines of the NHS, including to the new Nightingale facility. During this period of crisis, they are continuing to see patients via remote consultation, arranging and undertaking diagnostic imaging and prescribing treatment for those patients with time critical conditions.

One of the most iconic business in the HSMA, John Bell & Croyden, is continuing to offer a primary care service during these challenging times. The pharmacy has been serving London for more than 220 years and is operating a wholesale service, online, dispensing pharmacy, and private GP. It has also launched video nutritional consultations to offer informative advice on how to boost your immune system, among other topics.

Andrew Hynard, Chief Executive of The Howard de Walden Estate – the major landlord in the Harley Street Medical Area – commented : “We are extremely proud that so many of our private hospitals are assisting the NHS and supporting and treating patients impacted by COVID-19. By uniting in this way, it means vital hospital equipment, facilities, clinicians, and medical expertise are strengthening the NHS efforts to cope with this crisis and to help save lives”.

Other initiatives across the HSMA that are responding to the pandemic:

  • Fortius Clinic are providing an ambulatory orthopaedic service in both outpatient and surgical. It will provide support by freeing up capacity for the NHS to focus on treating more critical patients and those with COVID-19. The clinic will also carry out all other outpatient work via telemedicine, securely and confidentially, or by phone and/or video.
  • Isokinetic is continuing therapy with its newly developed programme, ‘Isokinetic at Home’. Specialising in sports injury treatment, orthopaedic rehabilitation and research, the clinic is encouraging people to remain active remotely until it is safe for them to meet again. Doctors and therapists will guide users for free in their activities – in a “smart” mode using video and phone calls, and through a personalised path of exercises.
  • Bodyset also took an early decision to adapt its services and move them online. With the assistance of an existing technology partner, they have been able to begin Online Physio services immediately. The Online Physio services offer the same assessment, diagnosis and treatment plans virtually as in-person.
  • Nightingale Hospital, a leading provider of private psychiatric hospital in central London, quickly adapted to the COVID-19 crisis and now offers numerous ways in which patients can access expert support remotely. This includes video consultations with consultant psychiatrists, and one-to-one and group sessions with therapists utilising platforms such as Zoom and Skype. As inpatient psychiatric treatment is at times essential, the hospital continues to admit patients, whilst adhering to strict health and safety policies.
  • Whilst the Priory Harley Street Wellbeing Centre is closed, to protect both patients and staff, they are currently not offering face-to-face therapy on an outpatient or day-care basis. People can still get access to expert therapists and as assessments via the Priory Connect video therapy service and through Skype. Priory Connect allows people to connect online (via video) to an expert therapist for 1:1 cognitive behavioural therapy.
  • Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Specialist Care’s 77 Wimpole Street location is still open for clinically urgent cases and are offering telephone or video consultations for all others. The diagnostic facilities are still open for urgent tests .As one of only five adult Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) centres in the country, Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals are playing a vital role in dealing with unprecedented and increasing demand for adult ECMO beds in the U.K. for those suffering with severe respiratory failure. Harefield Hospital has become one of two designated emergency cardiac surgical centres in London. The team have a major role to play in maintaining essential cardiac service for existing and new patients, across the sector.
