Tech Barcelona has opened Pier07, a 6 000 mยฒ sustainable space in Barcelona. It is designed to be an innovation hub for health and life science startups to collaborate with corporations. The health and life sciences ecosystem in Catalonia represents more than 9% of the GDP and continues to grow. Investing in innovation in this sector is crucial.

The latest BioRegion 2022 report prepared by Biocat, indicates that startups and scaleups have attracted โ‚ฌ445 million in investment, almost double that of the previous year. The majority of the capital raised came from international investors, mostly from Europe, Asia, and the United States.

The Pier07 stands as a systemic space where the different agents of the innovative ecosystem in health and life sciences can meet, locate their offices, organize activities, and seek joint solutions to challenges from technology, from Barcelona, and with international projection. Delve Health and UW Medicine Announce a Collaboration to Access Remote Data Capture for Diabetes Research

Abbott and Omada Health Partner to Offer Integrated Digital Health  for People with Type 2 Diabetes

Delve Health and UW Medicine are announcing a collaboration to provide new insights into endemic Type 2 Diabetes research, through artificial intelligence and machine learning (i.e., AI/ML) and remote data capture via Delve Health’s digital healthcare platform.

Delve Health’s Clinical StudyPal, a mobile and web-based platform that enables decentralized clinical trial research and remote patient monitoring, has been configured to capture patient data, 24-hours a day, through a wearable device (i.e., smart watch), procured and delivered via Delve Health’s extensive network of services. The app will not only gather quality data, such as the collection of the patient’s heart rate at 15 second intervals, activity level and SpO2ย levels at those same intervalsโ€”simultaneously. Delve Health’s digital health solution will monitor, track, analyze and report the patient’s data analytics to the clinical study staff team.

“This endeavor with UW Medicine, focused on AI/ML, will provide clinical insights captured through remote patient monitoring and, therefore, will advance diabetes research,” saidย Wessam Sonbol, CEO & Founder, Delve Health. ย He continued, “we are excited to collaborate with UW to increase, not only the amount of data collected, but improve theย qualityย of data collected. Having real-world evidence (RWE) in near real-time will not only assist our collective efforts to ultimately improveย diabetes clinical research trials and the overall patient experience, but we will also retain actionable data that additional diabetes studies can learn from and build upon.

The UW Medicine researchers hope to use AI to identify factors that promote and preserve wellbeing, an approach to health called salutogenesis from the Latin salus (meaning health) and the Greek genesis (meaning origin).

“Our NIH-funded Bridge2AI project called Artificial Intelligence Ready Equitable Atlas for Diabetes Insight (AI-READI; award project number 1OT2OD032644-01) will collect and release a flagship medical dataset for salutogenesis that will hopefully accelerate machine learning applications and generate novel hypotheses about Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus,” said Dr.ย Aaron Lee, an associate professor in Ophthalmology at theย University of Washingtonย School of Medicine. “As part of this dataset, we are collecting wearable fitness tracking data along with continuous glucose monitoring to build a biophysical profile of each participant. The smart watches used in this study will hopefully provide both activity monitoring and heart rate measurements that will be critical for achieving this aim.”

UW Medicine’s approach to this novel clinical trial is to collect a cross-sectional dataset of more than 4,000 people acrossย the United States, with dual-balancing for self-reported race/ethnicity (e.g., White, Black, Asian-American and Hispanic) and four stages of diabetes severity (e.g., no diabetes, lifestyle controlled, oral medication controlled, and insulin dependent). Building balanced training datasets is critical for the development of unbiased ML models. Thus, rather than targeting the demographic distribution of the U.S. population, we intentionally will recruit equal numbers of four racial/ethnic groups. The same rationale applies for balancing diabetic severity.

Due to the large number of patient participants volunteering for this study, and the goal of equal numbers, patient recruitment will be key. Delve Health’s Clinical StudyPal platform will help decentralize the study, allowing UW Medicine to recruit patients from all overย the United States, regardless of a patient’s geographical locationโ€”also allowing historically underrepresented patient populations access to participate.

St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital: Permits Filed for a $1 Billion Expansion Project

Those living in the city of Memphis should keep their eye open for some upcoming developments. St. Jude Childrenโ€™s Research Hospital has filed permits for high-rise expansion that is set to improve the hospitalโ€™s outpatient department and clinical workflow significantly. 

The institute, known for its reputation as one the leading centers for pediatric care and cancer research, has recently received a permit to begin construction on the $1 billion project. 

The first time this project was announced was July 13, 2022, when Dr. James R. Downing, president and CEO of St. Jude, stated in a press release that the investment would help speed up the process of research and treatment for catastrophic diseases in childhood.

A Major Step in the Hospitalโ€™s Operations

This investment is said to be a part of St. Judeโ€™s 2022โ€“2027 strategic plan. This implies that there are more developments to be revealed in the coming years. Most of the money for their expansion projects comes from donors and through money raised by efforts of the hospitalโ€™s own fundraising organization – ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities).

The $1 billion figure was originally supposed to only cost $600 million in 2021. However, supply chain issues, inflation, and modifications to the plan were responsible for the price increase. There are going to be two individual high-rise buildings: a clinical office and an outpatient facility. Any money left over is to fund other projects that the hospital has in its pipeline.

Each building will include 15 stories and stand 225 feet tall. The outpatient building will be slightly more spacious, with a proposed space of 714,000 sq. ft., compared to the 608,000 sq. ft. of the clinical office. Together, it is quite likely that the final costs will exceed the planned $1 billion. It is already set to be the most expensive construction project in the city.

A Blessing for the City of Memphis

The $1 billion expansion, along with other plans by St. Jude, is expected to contribute over 900 new jobs. Researchers at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm investigated how phase-contrast X-ray imaging could be used to detect lung illness in humans. A model of the human chest created by Duke University was used by the research team in the study that was titled- Phase-contrast virtual chest radiography.

The researchers discovered that phase-contrast chest radiography could see the smallest airways in the lungs, including some as small as 2 mm broad. The method can also aid in the detection of lung disease-related blockages, which conventional radiography cannot.

The conventional imaging limitations

In research labs, conventional phase-contrast imaging is limited to imaging centimeter-scale soft tissue samples. This study demonstrated that, if the technological requirements for clinical application can be met, phase-contrast X-ray imaging has the potential to identify lung disease.

According to Ilian Haggmark, the study’s primary author, conventional chest radiography technologies used in clinics and hospitals today can help detect lung disease, but they are limited by how they generate images. Haggmark opines that phase-contrast X-ray imaging may extract more information at a higher resolution while using the same amount of radiation exposure as traditional radiography.

In traditional radiography, the X-ray beam goes through the body and is absorbed in varying amounts by different tissues. After passing through the body, a detector assesses the intensity of the beam. This is known as attenuation, and it is the fundamental mechanism that provides the contrast that generates X-ray images.

Clinicians were able to obtain more information from each X-ray beam using the phase-contrast technique. They can use this technology to analyse changes in the waveforms of X-rays passing through a sample. X-ray beams collide with atoms and other structures, which can cause a wave’s location to change at any point concerning a reference wave.

The use of phase-contrast technology aids in the detection of lung disease

This data is utilised to create an image that enriches the sample’s structures. With enhanced contrast and resolution, these pictures can emphasise the margins of bronchial walls and tiny airways, allowing clinicians to quickly recognise the symptoms of lung disease.

Moving the detector farther from the patient, according to the researchers, is critical to this strategy. They also stress that building imaging equipment for larger samples will take time. A high-power X-ray source with a tiny emission spot is required. Essentially, bright X-ray sources are required, according to Haggmark.

4. Distract Yourself

Distraction is one of the best things to keep yourself from binge eating; most of us tend to fall into the ditch of binge eating when we are on vacation. Most of us fluff up after our holidays because of eating out of boredom. Hence, engaging in activities and distracting ourselves to stop eating too much is essential.

You can get yourself a puzzle or a crossword book to distract your mind. Try to engage yourself in an online course or learn a skill to keep your mind away from food. Books are also a great way to pass the time nicely without needing to eat.

5. Water Rule

Most experts suggest that dehydration is one of the biggest causes of binge eating. Apart from eating foods that reduce inflammation, you must also drink sufficient water. When you are dehydrated, your body signals to your brain that you are hungry.

One of the best ways to stop binge eating is to have water when you feel hunger kicking in. You can easily stop your sugar craving by having two glasses of water. Always keep a water bottle with you to hydrate your body. Having a minimum of 8 glasses of water daily is essential to deliver your body the hydration it needs.

To monitor my health and coordinate care, I spend a lot of time manually gathering, analysing, and sharing this information across different healthcare providers. This adds additional stress to my disease burden. And sadly, I am not alone. Patients often find themselves without easy access to the insights that could improve their care and their lives.

The need to connect fragmented data โ€” including mine โ€” inspired me to startย Jonda Health, a health tech platform. The cost of inaccessible data to patientsย 

A decade ago, researchers analysedย how much time patients and informal caregivers spendย managing chronic diseases. The finding was astounding: Two hours or moreย daily.

When data is inaccessible, things get even worse. Missing forms and duplicated clinical work contribute to hundreds of billions of dollarsย in healthcare annually. Then there are the wages patients lose when they leave work to deal with data headaches and redundant appointments.

This not only helps to improve patient’s understanding but also makes cliniciansโ€™ lives easier. When patients can use laypersonโ€™s terms to simply retrieve data with little effort, everyone wins.ย 

Machine learning algorithms to extract dataย 

When health data is digital, itโ€™s often available only as a scanned PDF file. In addition, a fair amount of data is still not digitised today.

To address this, we developed technology to digitise analogue health information. Our machine learning algorithm can classify types of document and extract, structure and standardise the unstructured data from certain document types, such as blood tests. This technology deployed in our patient facing app enables patients to upload any document or photo that they deem relevant to their health management.

The document or photo will automatically be categorised, and blood biomarkers will be presented in a way patients can understand. From there, in a few finger taps, they can share it easily and securely with their providers.

Many of us hold privacy concernsย about our health data and its use in applications. This is not surprising given the growing number of healthcare data breaches. A single health data record can cost $250 on the black market, far exceeding the $5 that buyers pay for a credit card number.

Security by default with zero knowledge encryptionย 

Data privacy and security is at the heart of everything that we do. We believe that it is a fundamental human right. Thatโ€™s why we not only use cryptographic end-to-end security but also zero knowledge encryption. In our patient facing application, this ensures that only patients can decrypt their data, giving them full control of their health information.

Given we are dealing with large amounts of unstructured data, we require massive processing capabilities. Retail Giants Making Inroads Into Serious Primary Care Arena

A new report laid out by the American Hospital Association Center for Health Innovation looks into how companies that are into retail as well as technology giants are driving transformational change in healthcare delivery across 2023 and even beyond.
