Study Examines The Current Landscape of FHIR Applications

Most electronic health record systems can provide data to FHIR apps, enabling secure information transfer when and where it is required. Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, or FHIR (called Fire), standardises how healthcare data is shared between various computer systems, independent of how the data is kept in these systems.

Through the FHIR interface, FHIR apps ingest data. Health information can be exchanged between doctors and patients, as well as between clinicians and healthcare systems, using the worldwide interoperability standard. FHIR may appear to be a complicated technical idea, yet patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems can apply it in everyday situations.

It improves access to health information for patients as well as for professionals, according to Dr. Schleyer. The ability to extract data from an electronic health record and perform meaningful tasks with it, such as analyse patterns, offer clinical decision assistance, or handle a specialised area not handled by a commercial electronic medical record system, is actually the fundamental competency of many FHIR apps.

Charles Jaffe, M.D., PhD, a co-author on the paper, said that the publication of this widely collaborative work represents a key step in stressing the significant international effort toward the adoption of HL7 FHIR. They see this platform as a crucial resource for the growing community of end users as well as technical implementers as the use of FHIR for patient care and research spreads. The Chief Executive Officer of HL7 is Dr. Jaffe. The new study, which was just published in JAMIA Open, highlights the quick growth and adoption of free and user-friendly FHIR apps over the course of less than a decade and predicts even faster growth and adoption in the future.

112 apps were examined to gauge the FHIR app landscape. 45 were devoted to research, and 74 to clinical treatment. A larger percentage were standalone web-based applications, whereas a smaller percentage were embedded within electronic health records.

The majority of the clinical apps were used in various healthcare settings, underscoring, in the authors’ opinion, the flexibility of FHIR. Instead of being designed with patients in mind, the majority of apps were created by software companies. Dr. Schleyer explained that when addressing FHIR, they were discussing a cutting-edge method of safely exchanging health data from various information systems.

FHIR can be compared to the electrical plug in the home as a plug-and-play standard. Electricity flows when people plug something into an outlet, and the TV or other item turns on without our being concerned about what the plug does. The same is true with FHIR. This new standard enables access to information across systems.

According to the 21st Century Cures Act, patient-facing FHIR apps are necessary for electronic health record certification in the United States. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will start mandating that payers adopt FHIR apps in 2023 for a variety of use cases. The implementation of FHIR-based personal health records and information sharing with providers are the main objectives of the European Union’s InteropEHRate and India’s Digital Health Blueprint. National patient identification systems are accessible via FHIR through the Ministry of Health of New Zealand and the National Health Service of the United Kingdom.

CMS Provides New Medicaid Rules To Address Social Needs

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have updated their recommendations for states on how to deal with the social needs of Medicaid recipients that are related to their health. With the use of in lieu of services and settings in Medicaid managed care, this is being accomplished.

The choice will assist states in providing alternative benefits to address needs resulting from food insecurity and housing instability. According to CMS, states may implement in lieu of services and settings to provide personalised, medically appropriate meals for individuals who have severe, chronic illnesses that are exacerbated by poor diet, living in a food desert, or not having access to a variety of nutrient-dense foods.

The advice lays out guidelines that governments must adhere to in order to guarantee that the advances are both economically and medically appropriate. They must also uphold the safeguards and rights of enrolees and accomplish the goals of the Medicaid program. The new guidance expands on the efforts made by individual jurisdictions to replace services with activities. For instance, according to the Commonwealth Fund, CMS last year accepted a California proposal to offer asthma remediation in the home, food, and housing deposits in place of treatments.

When it is both medically necessary and financially advantageous to do so, in lieu of services permits health plans to pay for non-medical services instead of typical Medicaid benefits, the research stated. According to the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute, states can include clauses in their risk contracts that permit the managed care organisation to provide services in place of those offered with the beneficiary’s approval.

The cost of such a service is taken into account when a state incorporates it into a risk agreement with the MCO, according to the paper.

Most Medicaid recipients are registered with MCOs.

As reported by the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute, in 2021, more than two-thirds of managed care states included elements relevant to SDOH, such as mandates to screen participants for behavioural health issues, in their contracts with MCOs. According to the research, individual MCOs are creating their own initiatives, such as donations to food banks and other community-based organisations.

The effort, according to CMS, supports the National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal to eliminate hunger and reduce diet-related diseases by 2030 while reducing inequities.

According to CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, states have been constantly working to better fulfil the social and medical needs of people with Medicaid coverage. This announcement is the latest step in CMS’s effort to use every tool at its disposal to expand and protect coverage for all eligible people as they collaborate with the state partners to provide whole-person care, said a CMS spokesperson.

Nobi AI-Driven AgeTech Device Helps Protect Seniors by Detecting and Preventing Falls

Nobi, a provider of innovative AgeTech solutions, today introduced its AI-powered smart lamp that focuses on fall detection and prevention for older adults, helping to protect against injury and death while also reducing healthcare costs due to falls. Already a proven medical device in the Belgian market, the Nobi smart lamp is now available in the US and other countries for use by assisted living communities and nursing homes. New features of the smart lamp include the ability to monitor distress indicators such as irregular breathing and coughing.

A version of the device for in-home use is anticipated for rollout in the US later this year.

A rapidly aging population is a challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. In the US, the number of people ages 65 and older isย projected to nearly doubleย from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million by 2060, and the age groupโ€™s share of the total population will also rise from 16 percent to 23 percent. Complicating this factor is the ongoing shortage of healthcare professionals.

WHO estimates that medical costs associated with falls by people over 65 will reach $240 billion per year worldwide by 2040.

โ€œSaving lives and safeguarding the quality years of life have been our driving forces since the establishment of Nobi,โ€ said Roeland Pelgrims, the companyโ€™s co-founder and CEO. โ€œOur older population has the highest risk of death or serious injury from falls, and this risk only increases with age. According to statistics, older adults are treated in hospital emergency rooms for falls every 11 seconds, and every 19 minutes an older adult dies from a fall.โ€

The Nobi smart lampโ€™s ability to detect falls not only protects seniors by summoning immediate help, but also lessens the burden on nursing and care staff, reducing the need to perform repeat, in-person check-ins.

The Nobi smart lamp also helps to prevent falls by shining a soft light when a resident sits upright in bed at night. If a person then stands to go to the bathroom, for example, the smart lamp will automatically illuminate the entire room. This will help the elderly find their way better and avoid tripping or bumping into objects. In time, using its AI technology Nobi will also be able to predict certain falls to help prevent them.

Already, Nobi has collaborations with large and small Belgian and international healthcare providers, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospitals, and has received investments to expand its footprint internationally, including in the US.

Visby Medical Receives FDA EUA for Respiratory Health Test for use in CLIA waived settings

Visby Medical Receives FDA EUA for Respiratory Health Test for use in CLIA waived settings

Visby Medical announced that it has received EUA from the U.S. FDA for its Respiratory Health point of care test. The Visby Medical Respiratory Health Test is a fast, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) device that detects and differentiates between upper respiratory infections caused by Influenza (Flu) A & B, and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

Visby Medical has created the first and only “instrument-free” platform that offers true PCR technology; PCR is the gold standard for testing Flu A, Flu B, and COVID-19. The Respiratory Health Test, which fits in the palm of your hand, provides accurate results in under 30 minutes at the point of care, enabling clinicians to accurately diagnose and treat patients.

Both the CDC and the Infectious Disease Society of America recommend clinicians should use rapid molecular assays (i.e., nucleic acid amplification tests) over rapid influenza antigen diagnostic tests (RIDTs) in outpatients to improve detection

However, PCR testing has not been widely adopted in outpatient settings in part, because of the expense required to adopt and maintain PCR instrumentation. The instrument-free Visby Medical device solves this problem.

“Accurate, rapid, point of care testing can help physicians prescribe appropriate antiviral medications, minimize viral transmission in waiting rooms, and improve patient satisfaction,” said Dr. Gary Schoolnik, Chief Medical Officer at Visby Medical. He further added, “Use of the Visby Respiratory Health Test at the point of care in urgent care clinics and emergency rooms will transform how patients with respiratory symptoms are diagnosed and treated.”

Online Therapy 101: What It Is And How It Changed Healthcare Forever

Digital technology has significantly advanced, transforming many sectors, including health services. Today, it’s not necessary to visit the hospital to get help from a doctor with the rise of telehealth services. With this setup, you can communicate with your doctor or any healthcare expert via technological devices, which is just as effective as visiting the hospital in person. That’s the whole idea behind online therapy.

What Is Online Therapy?

Online therapy is also referred to as teletherapy, e-therapy, e-counseling, or cyber-counseling. It’s where a qualified therapist offers mental health guidance and support via internet-based channels like video conferencing, messaging, online chatting, email, or internet phone.

It’s quickly becoming a critical component of healthcare for many people because of its convenience. You may want to see here a comprehensive list of counseling services you can access online. These include divorce, emotional and physical abuse, depression, anxiety, mental health disorders, grief after bereavement, trauma, postpartum stress, teen issues, conflict resolution, and sex therapy.

How Online Therapy Has Transformed Healthcare

Healthcare has a fair share of challenges, some of which have been solved through teletherapy, as outlined below:

  1. People In Rural Areas Can Get Help

Some mental health victims living in remote rural areas usually find it challenging to commute to a faraway hospital for therapy sessions. For one, it might be too expensive for them to make several trips weekly. Secondly, making the journey may take so much time and drain their energy, so the session becomes less efficient due to poor concentration. In some rural areas, the means of transport may not be very reliable.

Luckily, teletherapy allows such people to access health services from the comfort of their homes. As long as you have a stable Internet connection and suitable mobile devices, you can get in touch with your doctor and receive the needed help.

  1. Busy People Can Also Get Helped

Some people have tight work schedules that probably can’t allow them to visit the hospital as often as required for effective treatment. The good thing is that online therapy sessions can be scheduled for any time, even late evenings or early mornings. Busy people can plan their sessions for any time appropriate for them without interfering with their work.

  1. It Reduces Missed Appointments

For therapy sessions to be effective, attending every appointment is essential. Missing meetings with the physician slows down the healing process and inconveniences both parties. But that’s a reality that patients must face if they visit the care center now and then. Inconveniences like bad weather and traffic snarl-ups are common and may make one miss appointments.

Luckily, combining in-person sessions with online ones reduces the number of times one misses the sessions. Ultimately, the treatment proceeds faster and more effectively, getting the patient out of trouble quickly.

  1. It Saves Money

Generally, therapists charge less for online sessions than in-person visits. That’s because of the reduced costs of operation. With teletherapy, they may not need a spacious, furnished office that can fit them and the patient. They can conduct such meetings from their homes or private offices, which reduces their expenses.

Moreover, getting an Internet package might be less costly than traveling now and then, especially if you live far from the healthcare facility.

  1. It Guarantees Privacy

Some patients with mental health problems or other issues needing counseling may shy off visiting therapists because their friends and family may know about it. It’s normal to want to hide problems from family and friends, especially if you know they’re not the supportive kind. Luckily, with teletherapy, one can attend counseling sessions without any third party know. As it only requires a smartphone and Internet connection, one can do it in the privacy of their bedroom.

  1. It Enhances Patient Safety

When there’s an outbreak of diseases like COVID-19 or other contagious illnesses, it’s not always safe to visit the hospital frequently. Many patients go to health facilities to seek treatment, and there’s a high risk of contracting the diseases once you come into contact with them. E-counseling ensures you stay safe during such times.

  1. It Capitalizes On People’s Likes

Numerous people are already spending several hours online daily. Thus, accessing health services online doesn’t feel like a burden to them because they’re already familiar with the online space. It’s somewhat enjoyable to them, being the new norm.

Conclusion

Online therapy has significantly redefined how troubled patients seek help from professionals. People can get high-quality treatment with appropriate mobile devices and software solutions, nearly similar to in-person meetings. If you want to try it, find a reliable provider compliant with specific privacy laws to ensure your protected health information doesn’t leak to unauthorized third parties. Also, you’d better be the only one in the room and shut all doors and windows for added confidentiality.

Signing Up for a Proper Health Insurance Plan: The Top Facts You Need to Know

Health insurance is an important part of financial planning. It can provide coverage for medical bills, hospital stays, and other health-related expenses. Selecting the right health insurance plan can be a daunting task and itโ€™s important to understand the facts before making a decision. This article will provide information about what you need to consider when signing up for a proper health insurance plan.

1. Research your state’s laws and regulations

Each state has different laws and regulations for health insurance, so itโ€™s important to research your state’s rules before signing up. This will help ensure that you understand the benefits available to you and what’s covered under your plan. You can also find out what resources are available to help you make an informed decision. For example, if you are from Missouri, you can sign up for Obamacare in Missouri, but make sure you understand the requirements for enrollment. Itโ€™s important to do your research and understand the rules for each plan you are considering.

2. Understand the differences between plans

Different health insurance plans offer different levels of coverage, so itโ€™s important to understand which one is right for you. Consider factors like deductibles, co-pays, premium costs, prescription drug coverage, and out-of-pocket maximums when selecting a plan. Itโ€™s also important to research the network of providers associated with each plan. If you have a specific doctor or hospital you want to visit, make sure that they are in-network before signing up.

3. Know what your employer offers

Many employers offer health insurance plans as part of their employee benefits package. Itโ€™s important to understand what benefits your employer offers and how they compare to other plans. Your employer may offer more coverage at a lower cost than purchasing health insurance on the open market, so itโ€™s important to consider this before selecting a plan. When reviewing your employerโ€™s plan, consider features like coverage limits, waiting periods, and pre-existing condition exclusions.

4. Understand your budget

Health insurance can be expensive, so itโ€™s important to understand what you can afford before signing up for a plan. Consider factors like monthly premiums, co-pays, and deductibles when determining if you can afford the coverage being offered. Itโ€™s also important to consider the cost of prescription drugs and out-of-pocket maximums when creating your budget for health insurance. It can be helpful to create a budget and shop around for different plans to ensure that you are selecting the most cost-effective plan.

5. Read reviews from current members

Before signing up for a plan, itโ€™s important to do your research and read reviews from current members. This is a great way to get an honest perspective of the coverage offered by the plan and any complaints customers may have. Reading reviews can also provide insight into which providers are in-network with each plan and how satisfied people are with their claims process.

6. Know your rights

Itโ€™s important to understand your rights when it comes to health insurance. Federal and state laws provide certain protections for consumers, such as the right to appeal a denied claim or the right to cancel a policy within 30 days of purchase if you are not satisfied. Make sure you understand your rights before signing up for a plan so that you can make an informed decision, as we mentioned.

Why can insurance be a big expense?

Insurance can be a significant expense because it requires you to pay premiums to receive coverage. Depending on the type of plan and your particular needs, insurance premiums can range from very affordable to quite costly. Additionally, depending on your plan, you may also have deductibles and co-pays which can increase the overall cost of health insurance coverage. Itโ€™s important to research different plans before signing up so that you can find the most cost-effective option for your situation.

Can anyone sign up for health insurance?

In general, anyone can sign up for health insurance. However, some plans may have certain eligibility requirements such as age, income level, or pre-existing conditions that could make you ineligible to enroll. Itโ€™s important to do your research and understand the rules of each plan before signing up. Additionally, certain states may offer subsidies or other incentives to help individuals purchase coverage if they cannot afford it otherwise. It is important to take advantage of these options if you are eligible.

Understanding the facts before selecting a health insurance plan is key. Researching each plan, knowing the differences between them, and knowing what options are available will help ensure that you select the most appropriate coverage for your needs. By following these tips, you can rest assured that you have made an educated decision about your health insurance coverage. Good luck!

How To Design A Comfortable Life For Your Senior Loved Ones: A Comprehensive Guide

It’s hard to imagine that a loved one is staying at an uncomfortable home. As they age, they may need more help and support in order to stay healthy. They will also require assistance and care tailored to their condition and lifestyle.

Now that they are retired, you want to ensure their golden years are as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. You can help make easy changes to their homes to make sure they lead the life they deserve.

That said, this comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about creating a comfortable life for your senior loved ones. Here are some tips that you can consider:

  1. Add A Medical Alert System

Safety is one of the most important aspects to consider when caring for senior loved ones. There may be times when you will need to call for medical assistance for them. This could be due to a fall or if they’re experiencing an emergency that requires immediate attention.

While in-home care can be the best option, there are still times when an elderly loved one needs to be taken to a hospital or facility for treatment. This can be highly stressful for both you and your loved one if they don’t feel comfortable being away from home. If youโ€™re new to this kind of situation, you can check onesourcehh.com to learn more.

To ensure that your loved one is safe at all times, it’s important to have them enrolled in a medical alert system program. With this type of program, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that help is just a button press away should anything happen while you’re not around.

  1. Declutter Their Home

Comfort and safety are two of the most important factors to consider when designing a home for your senior loved one. The best way to ensure both is by decluttering.

Decluttering can be a daunting task for anyone. But it becomes much more manageable when you realize that youโ€™re helping your elderly loved one live more comfortably as well as assisting them in avoiding dangerous situations.

Here are some of the main benefits of decluttering a senior loved oneโ€™s home:

  • It makes it easier for them to get around their house: Many seniors have trouble moving around their homes due to injuries or medical conditions. This makes it difficult for them to do simple tasks like picking up laundry or putting away groceries. Decluttering will give them more room to maneuver around the house and make these tasks easier.
  • It gives them more storage space: If you have elderly parents who live in an apartment or small house, chances are they donโ€™t have much storage space at all. When you want to give them access to everything they require, including vitamins and medications, but there isnโ€™t enough room for everything, it can be especially frustrating.

Setting concrete goals that organize their belongings will help you start the decluttering process. You can put together a list of the items they will actually use and discard the ones that clutter their living space.

  1. Use Security Systems With Cameras

Security systems with cameras are a great way to help your elderly loved ones feel safe. They can be installed at their home or apartment so you can keep an eye on them from anywhere. If there’s an emergency, you will know about it right away.

The best thing about these systems is that they’re affordable and easy to install. You don’t need any special skills or knowledge to install them so anyone can do it. The system will detect any suspicious activity in the house, such as someone breaking in or someone trying to steal something from your loved one’s home.

You don’t have to worry about being far away when this happens because you’ll immediately receive an alert on your phone or computer letting you know what’s happening at a specific moment. You can see what’s going on through the cameras installed around the house and get all the details before calling 911 if needed.

This gives you peace of mind knowing that your loved one is safe while they’re alone at home.

  1. Install Grab Bars in The Shower

It’s a fact that most senior adults don’t like living in facilities or away from their families. They want to be able to enjoy their golden years in their own homes. This can be possible only if they’re healthy and fit enough to live on their own. However, this isnโ€™t always the case.

There are many seniors who get injured because of falls that leave them bedridden for days or even weeks. In such instances, it becomes essential for them to have someone around who can help them out.

If you have a senior loved one living in your house, you must ensure that they’re safe at all times and that they don’t fall while taking a shower or bathing themselves. You can design a comfortable life for them by installing grab bars in the shower. The grab bars will prevent them from slipping and thus prevent any kind of accidents from happening.

Installing grab bars in the shower is especially useful for those with mobility issues as it gives them extra support. You can decide to place them near the door jamb or faucet handles in your bathtub. Most grab bars are made of stainless steel so you wonโ€™t have to be concerned about corrosion. Some of them also have texture added for better grip.

  1. Change The Toilet Seat With A Comfortable One

The toilet seat makes a big difference. If it’s uncomfortable or hard to sit on, your senior loved one may avoid using the bathroom as often as they should. You can change the toilet seat to one that’s more comfortable and easier to use.

If you don’t have time to buy them a new toilet seat, there are other ways to make the existing one more comfortable. Here are some ideas:

  • Add a padded chair cushion or cushion pad to their wheelchair if they use one. This will also help them stay comfortable while out of the house.
  • The ideal solution is to replace a wobbly toilet seat with one that has built-in balance technology, but you can also get them a stool that fits over their current seat. It will make it easier for them to sit down without falling over or straining themselves unnecessarily.

Many different types of toilet seats available today are designed with comfort in mind. These include cushioned seats, heated seats, and even seats with built-in massagers. These seats will help your loved one feel more comfortable when using the bathroom during those cold winter months or if they just want to relax while sitting on their own toilet seat at home.

  1. Add Comfort Cushions And Support Pillows To Their Couch And Beds

Your senior loved ones must be comfortable at all times. This will encourage them to feel good about themselves and adopt healthy lifestyles. You can help them achieve that by carrying out simple tasks like putting comfort pillows and cushions on their beds and couches.

When you add comfort cushions and support pillows to their couch and beds, it’ll be easier for them to sit or lie down without experiencing any pain or discomfort. When you do this, you’ll notice that they’ll feel more relaxed. This can help them sleep better at night as well, which is always beneficial for them.

When you purchase cushions and pillows for their couch and beds, choose the ones that offer support and relief from pressure on the major joints. You can also select those with high-resilience foams because they are more comfortable and durable.

Seniors with lower back issues would greatly benefit from cushions with lumbar support. In addition to reducing pain, they improve spinal alignment and promote good posture.

Comfort pillows, on the other hand, need to be plush yet firm enough to support the head, neck, and shoulders. You can make your senior loved one feel more comfortable by getting them a pillow that fits their preferred sleeping position.

  1. Purchase Thicker Mattresses For A Better Night’s Sleep

Itโ€™s critical to take into account all aspects of your loved oneโ€™s life when ensuring their comfort. One way you can do this is by purchasing thicker mattresses for them. This will ensure they have a comfortable place to lay down and sleep at night.

Many types of mattresses available on the market today are specifically designed for seniors looking for comfort above all else. These include:

  • Foam Mattresses: Foam mattresses are generally more comfortable than spring mattresses and can be adjusted to provide extra support where needed. If a foam mattress is too soft, it can cause back pain by allowing the body’s weight to compress into the bed rather than distributed evenly across it.
  • Memory Foam Mattresses: Memory foam is one of the most popular types of mattresses because it molds to the contours of the body and relieves pressure points that can cause discomfort. Memory foam mattresses are also good at absorbing motion, so they’re less likely to wake someone up while they toss and turn in their sleep.
  • Tempur-Pedic Mattresses: Tempur-Pedic mattresses use memory foam and other materials to create personalized support for each side of the body. This means that your loved one can get comfort and support from whatever position they choose to sleep in. Whether on their stomach or their back, they won’t have to worry about getting up with sore muscles or stiff joints in the morning.

Some seniors may have issues with mobility or prefer something more comfortable than what they currently have. In this case, having a thicker mattress will help you provide exactly what they need.

  1. Update Their Wardrobe For Better Mobility

When your loved one has limited mobility, it can be difficult to find comfortable and functional clothing. The proper clothing will make your loved one feel more confident and able to move around freely without worrying about wardrobe malfunctions.

Clothing that is comfortable, functional, and easy to care for makes an important difference in the life of a senior with limited mobility. Here are some tips for updating your senior loved ones’ wardrobe:

  • Choose fabrics that are soft and lightweight: Cotton is a good choice since it breathes easily, which can help prevent overheating on hot days. Some synthetic fabrics can also breathe well, so you should look for them if your loved ones have allergies or other sensitivities.
  • Consider the weight of the fabric when choosing tops and bottoms: Heavy fabrics like wool tend to be warmer than lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen during cool weather months, but they’re not ideal in warm seasons because they don’t breathe as well as lighter options.
  • Choose loose-fitting tops with stretchy material: Select garments that have built-in stretch so that your loved ones can move about freely and they wonโ€™t feel uncomfortable when they bend down or sit down in them at home or out in public.

Senior citizens are more active than ever. They want to look good whether they’re driving, traveling, or just enjoying their grandchildren and playing at home. Therefore, it’s essential to update your loved ones’ wardrobes for better mobility.
